Dental Floss or Dental Tape? Which Is Better?

July 30, 2009

ozone generator

Whether you would like to use dental tape or dental floss, using one or the other is importanl to your oral health. Flossing and using tape will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. This can work to prevent or help end gum disease such as gingivitis and the more advanced periodontitis. The latter is an especially damaging problem, as it can result in tooth loss if left untreated.

To a an extent, the choice between dental floss or tape is a personal one. It all depends on which you like best. It depends, as well, on which you feel works best for you. The important thing is that you use one or the other each day, in conjunction with regular brushing. An oral irrigator is also a great tool.

The advantage of dental tape, is that it is bigger and thicker. In my opinion, just the pure physics of it, makes it the clear winner to do a better job.

You are, of course, supposed to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Some dentists will tell you to floss twice a day as well, while others say that once is fine. Typically, if you have sensitive gums, you likely have a problem. Healthy gums are not sensitive. Another good tool is an ozone generator. With this device can make an oxygenated mouthwash.

Now, what are the differences between these two dental tools? Well, as most of us know, floss is a thin, string substance which fits between the teeth. It is ideal for getting pieces of food and plaque from between them.

Tape tends to be wider and thicker. Floss can be a bit too thin. That can be a problem for people whose teeth are closely crowded together. Floss tends to fit more easily between close together teeth. Some people even say that it has the ability to remove stains from the teeth.

Whether you decide to use floss or dental tape, make sure you do it regularly. Further more, if doing this makes you gums bleed, talk to your dentist immediately. Bleeding whilst flossing is often a sign of gum disease.

Learn About Surfing : Basics Of Surfing

July 30, 2009

Riding waves is the focus of this installment of our guide to how to surf.

The first part of learning how to surf is knowing what waves are right for you. With much smaller ones you may get stuck in the water due to a lack of power or be unable to remain standing up. When it comes to big waves they may take your board right from underneath you. The perfect size wave for newbies are between 3-4 feet in height (1-1.5 m).

Good waves form into a gradual ‘C’ shape from a rounded swell of water. Position yourself on the swell as it is becoming ‘C’-shaped and begin to paddle. You want to be lying on your board, stomach down, with your head toward the shore and paddle with a freestyle stroke, alternating your arms. Check on the wave’s speed and direction by periodically looking over your shoulder while you gain momentum.

While lying down, your toes should be pointing straight down toward the board. Make sure your elbows are in close to your body, similar to a push up position. At the moment you feel the wave begin to lift you need to change from your lying down position on your board to a a crouching one (this movement is called the pop-up).

Whip your feet underneath your body, still gripping the sides of your board (referred to as the rails), so that they land roughly the same distance ahead of and behind the board’s midpoint. Your feet should be on the board’s stringer (the center line), each angled out a bit.

While tucking your knees into your chest gradually increase the tension of your feet against the board, let go of the sides of the board as you begin to stand up. Once standing, keep your knees bent and be sure to keep one arm forward and one back, extended.

A New Comer’s Guide to Collecting Stamps

July 30, 2009

Stamp collecting has two fundamental principles: you must enjoy what you are collecting and you must keep them in excellent condition. Except these, you get to decide what kinds of stamps to collect and have them displayed in any way you want. Therefore, stamp collecting can be a very enjoyable activity for someone who is creative.

Stamps come in four basic types, namely, traditional, topical, specialist, and worldwide. Traditional stamp collectors go for stamps of their respective countries. Topical stamp collectors choose their stamps depending on the designs. A specialist collection would just be a compilation of numerous copies of a single stamp issue. A worldwide collection includes all the stamps the collector had come across with. Any How to Collect Stamps class will tell you to start as a worldwide stamp collector until you decide what you like best and then you can specialize if you desire.

A number of stamp collectors choose to have more than one collection of different stamp types. For those who are just starting out, it is advisable to look at lots of stamp types and designs and acquire as much information as you can. Doing these would allow you to discover sides of stamp collecting you would never have imagined existing. Another way to learn more about collecting is to read as much stamp collecting news as you can get your hands on. The more you know the better.

What is important for you to keep in mind is that when starting out in stamp collecting, begin with just what you have in sight. You do not necessarily have to do too quickly. As you go on, you will stumble upon the stamps you truly would like. In the meantime, be happy with what you have at the moment and be sure to take good care of them.

As a stamp collector, you need to get hold of stamp tongs, by hook or by crook. Stamp tongs are basically your ordinary tweezers minus the sharp edges. The use of tweezers is unacceptable for collectors as these will damage your stamps. The strict use of tongs for stamps is another thing all collectors must observe.

Moreover, never use your hands to pick up your stamps or even put them on top of a bare table. The particles of dust on the table and the natural oils of your skin will only soil your stamps. If you want to look at your stamps, pour them out onto a clean sheet of white paper or such. Every collector is painstaking when it comes to his collection. Having numerous stamps is not enough grounds for calling yourself a stamp collector. You should be passionate about collecting stamps, and you must be very strict with regards to stamp care.

Beginners in stamp collecting need not have a lot of supplies. The only must-have supplies are stamp tongs, envelopes, and a box for storage. Like what was said earlier, you would be using stamp tongs to pick up your stamps. Envelopes, on the other hand, will act as folders where you can put your stamps according to type. You will then store these envelopes inside the storage box. Make sure to label the envelopes according to the type of stamps contained inside them.

How To Jump Higher Like The Pros

July 29, 2009

Learning how to jump higher benefits all athletes, especially those in basketball, volleyball, and track. Most people are not born with the jumping trait, but it is something you can definitely learn. Jumping higher can be beneficial on several different levels, all you have to do is practice consistently proper exercises.

Part of the basis for learning how to jump higher is building strength in your legs. Increasing the power and strength in your legs will allow you to get the push off the ground and thus increase your jump. During strength training it is important to work all the muscles in the legs, from the quads to the calves.

A great place to start is doing squats, lunges, and calf raises. Even though you may think that cardio training wouldn’t help, it actually can make all the difference. So make sure you add in any running, jogging, or biking whenever it’s available. Doing so will definitely add leg strength and increase your jumping abilities. In fact, there is a good exercise that can help right in the comfort of your own home. All you have to do is try jumping while you are in a seated position.

It is always easier to get some help when you are trying to learn how to jump higher. There are many programs out there that say they can help you to increase your vertical jump, but not all programs are created equal. Plus it will give you the opportunity to be more flexible and agile as you become more accustomed to the exercises.

You also need to make sure you seek the right material that explains the form. Yes, it will help increase your jumping abilities. Seriously, if you spend the time to simply fix your form, you’ll be able to jump anywhere from 2 to 4 inches higher.

The approach should not skimp out on teaching you about proper diet. Diet can also play a role in how you perform during a jump. Adjustments to your diet can help you to greatly improve your jump.

The program you choose should also teach you about the right and wrong way to perform exercises. That is part of the reason why you decided to go with a training program, so ensure that technique is included in your training.

Proper technique includes an understanding of plyometrics. Plyometrics training is basically jump training, so you can see why it is important to understand. A good program will ensure you understand proper plyometrics.

A good program will also include resistance training that will work those muscles, as explained earlier. You have to increase muscle to increase your jump.

However, over everything else it’s extremely important to understand how your muscles work. If you can train them correctly, then you’ll end up getting more power out of your legs and gain all kinds of jumping abilities.

When it’s all said and done, you can find yourself a well rounded program if you take the time to understand it all. Our goal is to help you gain more inches regarding your vertical jumping abilities. In order to do this you’ll have to train hard and right. If you don’t, you’ll end up straining your muscles and causing an injury.

Lessons from Coaching Youth Baseball – Lesson #1: First Steps in Coaching

July 29, 2009

I was a youth baseball coach for many years. I became a coach because my son’s first coach did not give him enough playing time to increase his skill set. The way his first coach ran practices, also frustrated me. I found that he was only making progress when he worked directly with me. Thus, out of frustration, I became a head coach his second year in baseball.

I knew how to play the game, but I didn’t know how to teach the game; the first thing I realized, very quickly, was my inability to transfer my knowledge to the players. My assistant coach and I began to attend all the coaching clinics possible. Coaching clinics can be a little frustrating because you will find they are not consistent in the mechanics they teach. I found that the mechanics that came with the simplest instructions and the least amount of movement were the best; simple instructions alleviate frustration for both the coach and the player. Also, simple translates into success, faster. Success translates into fun.

The second thing I learned very quickly was the age group you are coaching determines the coaching style. The younger the players, the shorter the attention span. For example, a coach should not spend more than 5 minutes on any one drill for 7 or 8 year old players. Show them the proper technique, let them practice that technique a few times, and then move them on to another drill. Don’t let frustration lead you to think that there is no way they can pick up any technique that quickly. Young players will constantly amaze you if practices are organized, fast-moving, and fun.

The third thing I realized very quickly was the importance of having fun yourself. The more fun you have coaching, the better coach you will be. Fun is contagious; players will learn quicker if they see the coaching staff having fun teaching them. The job of a coach is to teach baseball, make the game fun, so players will stick with the sport, and to be fair with playing time. Kids practice to play; so, reward practice with playing time.

Fairness was the last thing I learned, very rapidly. Be fair with the players and be fair with your own son or daughter. Attempt to treat your son or daughter no differently than you would treat every other player on the team. The best way to accomplish this is to have someone, not attached to coaching staff, observe, and give you feedback. In that respect, I was lucky. My son’s grandparents and my wife never missed a game. I had real-time, immediate, feedback after every game. I heard about it after the game, if I was too hard on my son. Please remember, you want your son or daughter to have fun and stick with the sport because of the fun and not because you want them to get a college scholarship. Additionally, try to be fair with playing time for all of your players. Mistakes are a reality of baseball. The only way to alleviate mistakes is playing time. So, when allocating playing time, be fair. Remember that it is not where a player starts that is important, it is where they finish.

The first of many lessons that can be learned from coaching youth baseball. All of the lessons can be found at Baseball Armory – “The Baseball Blog”. Baseball Armory – “The Baseball Blog” is sponsored by Baseball Armory. Baseball Armory is an online store that contains quality Akadema softball and baseball gear. Akadema produces high quality baseball and softball equipment, including Infield and outfield gloves, catcher’s mitts, metal and wood bats, cleats, turf shoes, batting gloves, sunglasses, apparel, equipment bags, glove care products, and miscellaneous baseball and softball accessories.

Stay on Track with Slot Car Racing

July 29, 2009

Slot cars are those model electric cars that run on slotted track that keeps them from flying off. Scalextric are probably the best known manufacturer of slot car racing sets, cars and equipment.

Slot car racing is a safe and fun hobby enjoyed by many people, young and not-so-young. I’m sure that many people can remember the fun and thrills they had as children with their Scalextric sets. You will find that the Scalextric system hasn’t really fundamentally changed much since the 1950s. Early examples of Scalextric slot cars are popular with collectors who will sometimes pay a smal fortune for good quality models. It’s even possible to run Scalextric cars from those early days on modern track without any modification.

Todays Scalextric systems are much more sophisticated with the introduction of the Sport digital systems. The basic original Scalextric system allowed two cars to run alongside one another on dedicated tracks however the new digital technology allows more than one car to run on the same track for cars to change lanes. These new and innovative features provide a whole new level of fun and enjoyment which has helped the hobby to develop considerably in recent years.

Although it was originally a British invention Scalextric now has a huge and enthusiastic following in the United States. Many popular US race meetings are included like the Indycar and NASCAR. One key factor that has helped to develop the popularity of Scalextric is that they actually encourage other manufacturers to produce slot cars and accessories for their systems. These days there are a variety of reputabel slot car manufacturers who produce some great cars suitable for Scalextric.

The ease of expansion is one of the key attributes that has made the Scalextric system enduringly popular. A good starter system from Scalextric will set you back only about £40 ($70). But this simple starter set comes with everything needed for hours of thrilling fun, hurtling around the track at break neck speed.

You will find there are many clubs for slot car enthusiasts where they meet to exchange skills and race one another, often with their own car designs. There are slot car race meetings throughout the country, and around the world, throughout the year. Slot car enthusiasts often become involved in modifying their cars and optimising their motors, wheels and bearings for best performance.

If you are interested in getting into slot car racing I’d recommend starting with a low priced Scalextric Start Race Set and if you enjoy it then find a local slot car club to join. You will meet some very friendly and helpful fellow enthusiasts who will provide you with lots of advice and guidance and they’re likely to challenge you to a race or two.

Gingivitis is Something To Be Aware Of….

July 29, 2009

dental care

In the simplest sense, the meaning of gum disease, professionally diagnosed as periodontal disease is a description for growing bacteria in your mouth that progresses in stages which can eventually destroy the tissues that are surrounding your teeth for support.

A phase of gum disease is set into motion with plaque build up. When plaque accumulates to increasing levels, it turns into a harder substance referred to as tartar. Tartar is hard to remove as it is bound to the teeth. This stage is accompanied by a term, gingivitis, I am sure you’ve heard of.

With the beginning events of gingivitis, you will notice that your gums will become red. They begin to swell. When you brush your teeth, you may experience bleeding. At this stage, your mouth is becoming unhealthy and needs the attention of a professional. At this stage, you may feel a slight gum irritation, but your teeth will be stable and intact.

To prevent gingivitis, you can take a few steps. The best, most practiced, and expressed by professionals is the need to brush after every meal and flossing regularly. This will fend off plaque build up in the early stages. Paying attention to daily oral hygiene will decrease your chances of contracting gingivitis.

If you don’t take care of your symptoms, gingivitis progresses into a disease called periodontal disease. This is a critical stage. The outcome is that a layer of your gum begins pulling from your teeth or recedes. You may notice spaces forming between your teeth. This leaves to a greater chance of small particles of food getting caught and causing infection and pain. At this point, you are at risk of your teeth getting loose and falling out.

Hopefully, you’ll recognize the signs of gum disease in its early stage. It can be treated to restore you to a healthy stage.

How Much Pain Can One Bike Cause?

July 29, 2009

Mountain Biking and indeed cycling in general is one of the most popular sports in the world. Part of its appeal comes from the fact that cycling can be done for fun, exercise, sport, or in a functional capacity such as commuting to work. However, those who are keen cyclists are probably aware that if precautions aren’t taken, there are a number of repetitive-strain injuries that can occur from cycling, especially mountain biking. Let’s take a look at 3 of the most common complaints and how they can be avoided.

Wrist Strain. A great deal of the force that is transmitted to the bike when you go over bumps travels up through the wrists. What’s more, as your upper body weight is usually pushing down on your wrists, they can often be put under a lot of strain and become inflamed or injured. A good way to avoid this is have decent suspension on the bike to absorb a lot of the pressure, or alternatively find a bike that is made out of impact absorbing material such as the Specialized 2D.

Pain In The Backside. You would be amazed at just how many riders report suffering from this complaint, which is usually caused by long durations of pressure and poor padding. It is in every rider’s interest to address backside problems as soon as they can quickly become quite serious and even lead to problems with fertility. If you are going to buy a new saddle it is well worth testing it out extensively and giving it a few miles worth of use, as sometimes saddles can start off comfortable, but cause problems after a while. You can also purchase specialised cycle clothing such as padded shorts which act to dampen the effect of harmful pressure.

Knee Injury
. A large number of cyclists report suffering from inflamed knee joints or damage to the cartilage in the knee. If you lock out your knees when you are cycling this can cause problems, but most often knee problems are a result of the bike. Try making sure all your bike components have shock-absorbing qualities, such as Zipp wheels which reduce the amount of force transferred through the knee joint.

How Do You Recognize When You Have Gum Disease?

July 29, 2009

oral irrigator

Most people see white, healthy teeth as an attractive feature. Although a bright smile may be a help to your appearance, the more important fact is that a well cared for mouth is the only way to prevent gingivitis, a form of gum disease.

Recognizing the early symptoms of gingivitis can be difficult. It starts as a mild redness and swelling of the gums. At this point, simply brushing and flossing more often may be the only course of action necessary. If left untreated, you may next experience pain and bleeding of the gums when you brush or floss. An oral irrigator could be helpful now. At this point you will want to schedule an appointment with you dentist for a thorough cleaning and advice about how to proceed.

If the condition is allowed to continue the gums will pull back from the teeth. Not only is this unattractive, but it leaves more of the surface of your teeth exposed to plaque which may compound the problem. At this point it is also possible that you will develop periodontitis. This infection of the jawbone can lead to permanent damage to the teeth and bones of the mouth and face.

The way to avoid all of these problems is to develop and stick to a stringent oral hygiene routine. This routine should include regular brushing and flossing, at least twice a day. A hydro floss, not to be confused with the hydro pulse could be quite helpful here. It is also important to see you dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings. This should help you to avoid gingivitis but if it does not your dentist can catch the disease early and suggest corrective actions.

An ozone generator may also be useful. It can help you to make your own oxygenated mouthwash at home. This might be beneficial to your oral health.

Whether or not you view bright white teeth as attractive, it is a pretty sure bet that you will view the discolored teeth and gums caused by gingivitis as unattractive. With a few daily steps and regular dentist visits it is possible to avoid this dilemma completely.

Disclaimer:

The Symptoms Of Gingivitis Should Not Be Ignored…

July 29, 2009

oral irrigator

The symptoms and treatment of gingivitis is such that it could be handled by any individual regardless of your financial status. Very many people get concerned when they begin to notice the symptoms but are not informed about how to treat it. Let us get it straight first; gingivitis is associated with the inflammation of the gums caused by some bacteria that feed on food debris in the teeth. When this intensifies, it leads to some other stages of gum bleeding, severe pains and this could cause pain.

Some believe that one of the major causes of gingivitis is due largely to poor oral hygiene such as not maintaining a regular brushing habit and negligence but that is not always true. Some symptoms start to develop such as gum bleeding. These are sure symptoms which should never be taken lightly as they may indicate gingivitis.

As part of the treatment, effort should be made to ensure the use of a tooth brush that is not so hard but adequate for the activity. Daily brushing should be utilized after meals as this will help to prevent food particles from collecting around the gums and being infected by bacteria. Proper rinsing of the mouth after brushing is also necessary. An oral irrigator can be helpful.

Many people avoid their dentist. This is not a good idea. Regular visits and checks by a certified periodontist is a good preventive measure. An ozone generator may be of use as you can make an oxygenated mouthwash with it. The proper treatment of gingivitis is very much within the reach of everyone if adherence could be given to practicing good oral hygiene and also seeing a dental specialist for dental check ups.

Once you have identified the symptoms at the early stage, get started with the treatment and see your dental specialist to avoid the chronic stage. The hydro floss, not to be confused with the hydro pulse is a very good tool to start with. Get basic training on the use of this device from your dentist or hygienist.
