1. Have perfect Posture
In bowling, posture counts! Keep your head up, looking straight at your target. Your shoulders should remain square to the foul line, especially through the swing.
2. Grip the ball properly
If you use a house ball, make sure the thumbhole is loose fitting. The thumb often swells a little during bowling and if you’re forcing your fingers into the holes before you bowl, they’ll probably get stuck! If you have your own ball, have your finger holes custom drilled by your pro shop. If your thumb routinely swells, it may help by wrapping it in bowler’s tape. If your hands sweat, be sure to carry a towel to wipe them on and then use a little rosin to dust your hands. If you have a difficult time gripping the ball, your pro shop can insert grips into the finger holes.
3. Remember where you are
For right-handers, a good place to start is 2 arrows right of the middle. For left-handers, start 2 arrows to the left of the center. Adjust your position right or left after you have bowled a couple of balls, depending on where your ball ended up.
4. Focus on your target
Make up your mind where you’re going to aim. If it’s your first ball, aim to bowl so that it will hit the right of the front (#1) pin first if you’re right handed, or to the left of it if you’re left handed.
5. Breathe
Take three slow, deep breaths to make yourself relaxed. It’s common to feel anxious before bowling… but the more comfortable you are, the more control you will have over your ball.
6. Smooth moves
The speed and power of your ball are determined by the way you carry yourself to bowl. Position yourself so you will take four consistently paced steps to throw the ball.
7. Slow down!
One of the most common traits beginner bowlers have in common is to rush. It’s important to have some speed to deliver the ball properly, but too much speed is the #1 reason for both gutter balls and 7-10 splits in beginner bowlers!
8. Maintain your balance
Remember to remain upright and focused on your target as you approach the foul line. Keep your shoulders square as you use your leg as a counterweight to keep your balance during the release.
9. Releasing the ball
Keeping your arm slightly bent at the elbow, retract your arm behind your body, cradling the ball in your hand. Keep a smooth straight arc from back to front. Be careful of arcing around your body and back…that’s a common habit in many new bowlers! At the low point of your swing, release the ball. A relaxed arm and wrist make for an effective shot!
10. Following through
Keep your target in sight and your arm continuing its arc forward even after the ball has been released. Just “letting the ball go” and pulling your arm back will roll the ball off-course.

I want to discuss the effect of “side” when you are playing a billiards game.
Place the red ball on the centre-spot of the table. Put the cue-ball about a foot behind the red and dead in line with the centre of the middle pocket facing you. I want you to pot the red in the middle pocket, a perfectly straight shot, first with as much right-hand side on your ball as you can put on it, and then with as much left-hand side as you can impart.
This particular shot is merely to prove something to you, how difficult it is to pot the red with strong side on your ball as directed.
Do not practice the stroke after you have made it once or twice-I have only asked you to do it to show you that the moment you put side on your ball you find it harder to hit the object-ball correctly than when you strike your ball centrally.
Cue Line and Stroke Line
The reason for this is two-fold, but only one aspect matters in the stroke you have played. This is that when you pot the red by striking your ball in its centre, the line of your cue and the line of the stroke are the same. They must be, because the line of every stroke is taken from the centre of the cue-ball.
But when you put side on your ball in a billiards game, you must move your cue to the right or left of the centre of your ball, which means that the line of your cue and the line of the stroke are no longer identical. In effect, you are estimating your stroke along one line and swinging your cue on another parallel to it. You must do this every time you put side on a ball, and your stroke, especially if it is a winning hazard, becomes automatically more difficult than it would be if you struck your ball centrally.
Ball “Turn” and its Effect
In addition, there is the important fact that side makes a ball turn if it has any distance to travel before striking the object-ball. This turning tendency is of no practical account if your ball is moving quickly, but if you play a slow or slowish ball with strong side on a woollen cloth, the ball will turn in the direction of the side when running with the nap, and in the contrary direction when running against the nap. On a napless cloth, the ball always turns in the direction of the side it carries.
This makes a lot of difference when your ball has a long way to go, and an appreciable difference at what may be called medium ranges. To prove this, put the red ball almost touching the top cushion and four or five inches from the left-hand top pocket.
If you aim to hit the red a ” full ball,” and put as much left side on your ball as you can, you actually see your ball turn as it travels slowly up the billiard table, and finishes by just clipping the red beautifully, and leaving it in good position as the cue-ball darts into the pocket.
Quite a pretty shot, and a good one when you want it, but at the moment I wish you to study it to learn how much you have to allow for your ball departing from a straight line owing to the influence of side.
Only use Side when Necessary
Consequently, whenever you use side, you have to swing your cue parallel to the true line of the stroke, and to allow for your ball “running off” if you play at all slowly at such a range that your ball has room in which to “spin away.” You can do all this, but you do not want to volunteer for it. Therefore, never use side if you can possibly do without it.

This is another test of free cueing, and is worth trying merely on this account. It is a good shot because it eliminates the risk there is of potting the white if you attempt the screw cannon from white to red via the top cushion.
There is also a sporting chance of your ball dropping nicely on the red and tapping it over the top pocket when the five-cushion cannon is completed. This stroke also takes the white over towards the red, the screw shot splits the balls, from which it is evident that, as usual when playing the game of billiards, enterprise pays when everything is taken into account. Sliding Techniques If You Want to Become a Good Baseball Player

If you want to learn how to be a good baseball player, you have to learn how to slide right. There are two different ways to do this. One is called the “leg under,” or “bent leg” slide, and the “hook slide” or “fade away.”
Let’s talk about proper form for the hook slide first. Sit down with legs in front of you, and turn to the right to so that your weight is on your right hip. Bend your left leg so that your calf is facing at a 90-degree angle to your thigh. That foot’s toe is your “hooking foot.” Raise your hands over your head and lower your torso until your back touches the ground. Swing your right foot right ever so slightly and raise a couple of inches off the ground. That is a hook slide to the right.
You can do it on the other side, too, and reach for the corner of the base with the toe of your right foot instead of your left.
When you make the hook slide, remember that you need to spread your weight out as much as possible and get your back on the ground. Keep the foot that’s not hooking the base (the one on the outside) off the ground. If you don’t, you risk injuring yourself because your spikes can catch in the dirt and your body weight sliding forward may turn your ankle down and out, which can cause a sprain or even a break. And don’t jump at the base when you make the slide. Slide up to the base instead. Keep your hands off the ground, too.
If you keep your hands on the ground, you may cut yourself badly or get a bad wrist sprain. If you have trouble keeping your hands off the ground, pick some dirt up in each hand when you get on base and hang on to it until the slide is finished.
Now, for the “leg under” slide. Sit down again with your legs out in front of you, and put your bent right leg under your left, so that your right shin faces the base you are going to slide into. Roll over on your right hip ever so slightly and again, raise your hands over your head. If you think the play is going to be close and you want to go straight into the base, make sure your back is fully down and reach for the base with your left toe. For the opposite side, simply reverse positions.
If you want to make sure you stop at the base, or if you intend to continue onward, ride in on your bent leg until it touches the base. Your top foot should go over the base and bring it down on the other side. Then, spring upward to be on your feet again and ready to go on.
To get an idea of this, sit in the bent leg position and then ask someone to grab one of your hands and pull you up. You’ll see that you’ll come up naturally to your feet.
If you’re going to slide, commit to it and slide
One absolute rule about sliding is important for everyone. If you’re going to slide, slide. Don’t start to slide and then change your mind in the middle of it.
And it’s important to recognize that if someone is making a play on you at second or third base, always slide as a safety resort. That’s because running can cause problems, which can increase your chances of being tagged out. You can slow up and not overrun the bag, true, but that can risk being tagged out, as does overrunning the bag in general. Of course, you can overrun home plate, but don’t go into the base standing up unless you know what’s going to happen and the catcher is not going to try to tag you. If there’s any doubt, slide.
If you can only slide on one side (such as the right or left), use a hand to tag the base. If you going to second base, for example, to be the throw from left field, the second baseman to leave the left side of the base open for you. If you can only slide on the right side, you should do that. Again, go to the third-base side of second, though, and grab the base with your right hand as you are sliding in.
You can practice sliding at one of two places: a jumping pit used for track and field events, or at the beach. Either way, though, never jump at the base, which again is a waste of energy and it’s something you can easily (erroneously) learn to do at one of these two places during baseball training.
