(12) Penn State (7-1) at Northwestern (5-3)

Saturday, October 31st, 4:30 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: The 12th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions march into Evanston, where they will hook up with the Northwestern Wildcats in Big Ten action this weekend at Ryan Field.

The Lions are coming off another solid win, as they defeated Michigan, 35-10, on the road this past weekend.

“Overall, I think everybody just made up their mind that we were going to show people we were a pretty good football team, and they came out here and played well,” said head coach Joe Paterno.

The win was PSU’s first in Ann Arbor since 1996, as the Lions improved to 6-1 over their last seven road games dating back to last season. Winners of four straight, the Lions are certainly on a roll as they gear up for a date with Ohio State next weekend.

For the Wildcats, they are coming off a more dramatic win, using a late field goal to rally for a 29-28 win over Indiana last weekend. Northwestern overcame a 25-point deficit, the largest in program history, for its third win in four games.

“Wow, what a game,” said head coach Pat Fitzgerald. “It was the tale of two halves. I thought at halftime we made some subtle adjustments in all three phases and our players did a good job taking to those adjustments and went out and made it happen.”

Northwestern is now 5-3 on the campaign, but is facing its toughest stretch, with the team’s final four opponents owning a combined record of 21-9.

The Wildcats and Lions are clashing for just the 13th time on the gridiron and the first since 2006, with PSU holding a 9-3 lead in the head-to-head series.

The Lions turned in a complete performance on offense last weekend, as they rushed for 166 yards and threw for 230, while avoiding any turnovers in a win at Michigan. Quarterback Daryll Clark was terrific in the win and he completed 16-of-27 pass attempts for 230 yards and four touchdowns.

“I thought [Daryll] Clark played a great game,” said Paterno. “In all fairness I don’t think Daryll’s received the credit he should have, because he’s really played great football. People have been critical of him, but people didn’t catch the ball.”

Clark is in the midst of a rather noteworthy campaign and he has completed 62.1 percent of his tosses, with 17 touchdowns against seven interceptions. He also has four rushing scores, giving him 55 career touchdowns, the most by any PSU player.

Spreading out the ball has helped make Clark successful, as four players have already caught at least 20 passes. Derek Moye leads the team with 33 receptions and 525 yards, while Graham Zug is tops with five touchdown catches. Against Michigan, Zug was the player who shined with five catches for 59 yards and three touchdowns.

Evan Royster even enjoyed success last weekend, as he rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries. It was the fourth 100-yard effort this season by Royster, who has rushed for 741 yards, helping PSU average a solid 184.4 ypg on the ground this year.

PSU leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 8.9 ppg, and it has held six of its first eight opponents to 10 points or less for the first time since the 1973 season. The unit is giving up a mere 240.2 total ypg, including a measly 79.8 rushing ypg, and the group has also recorded 26 sacks.

The Lions’ defense was all over Michigan last weekend and surrendered only 250 total yards. The unit notched four takeaways and five sacks, while holding Michigan to just a 3-of-15 effort on third downs.

Navorro Bowman had a big game in the win, finishing with 11 tackles, a fumble recover, interception and sack. He now has 44 stops, including nine for losses, in six games, proving he is an top linebacker.

“So I think that there’s no question he’s a fine linebacker,” said Paterno. “He’s one of the better linebackers in the country. And I hope we can keep him healthy.”

Stefan Demos nailed a 19-yard field goal with 21 seconds left to play, as the Wildcats scored 26-unanswered points to edge Indiana, 29-28, over the weekend. Northwestern trailed 28-3 midway through the second quarter before taking over and it drove 65 yards in 6:43 to set up the game-wining field goal.

The Wildcats fell behind early due to some mistakes, as quarterback Mike Kafka was picked off three times. He, however, rebounded by throwing for 312 yards and two scores and rushing for 65 yards and a third touchdown.

“I take responsibility for all of them, without a doubt,” said Kafka about the interceptions. “It’s definitely something we can fix up and clean up for next week and it’s obviously great to get the win and be able to have an opportunity to learn from those mistakes.”"

Kafka has had some issues with turnovers this season, but he is a huge part of this offense and has completed 66.1 percent of his throws for 2,067 yards. He is also the team’s top rusher with 206 yards and five touchdowns to his credit. Northwestern is averaging 392.6 total ypg behind Kafka, who will need to be sharp against PSU’s stout defense this weekend.

Zeke Markshausen is Kafka’s main outlet with 58 catches and 553 yards, but Andrew Brewer is also dangerous, racking up 519 receiving yards and five scores. Last weekend, both players hauled in eight passes and a touchdown and they combined for 229 receiving yards.

Northwestern’s defense had some struggles early on last weekend, but came on strong and held Indiana without a point in the second half. The unit gave up just 305 total yards, below its season average of 338.1 ypg, and limited Indiana to only 13 first downs and even came up with a crucial goal line stand.

“The defense pitched a shutout with a big fourth down play down at the goal line and getting us off the field,” said coach Fitzgerald.

The defense however, didn’t come up with any takeaways and managed just one sack and that was surprising. The Wildcats have forced 18 turnovers and recorded 20 sacks this season, so they obviously can make big plays.

Quentin Davie heads the defense with 59 stops, eight TFLs and four sacks and he had six tackles last weekend.

PSU is rolling along, but the Wildcats have a lot to play for and should give the Lions all they can handle. The Lions’ defense should make the difference, although Northwestern could hang around if Kafka can do a better job of protecting the ball. Penn State will Roll!!!!

Texas at Oklahoma State 10-31-09

(3) Texas (7-0) at (13) Oklahoma State (6-1)

Saturday, October 31st, 8:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: A top-25 battle is set for Stillwater this weekend, as the third- ranked Texas Longhorns take on the 13th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys in a crucial Big 12 battle in Boone Pickens Stadium.

Mack Brown’s Longhorns are well on their way to a Big 12 South title with one of their last real hurdles coming in the form of the Cowboys. Texas is undefeated on the year at 7-0 and 4-0 in league play, and enters this game following perhaps the team’s most impressive victory to date, a 41-7 dismantling of Missouri in Columbia last weekend.

Mike Gundy’s Cowboys have been one of the more resilient teams in the country this year. Despite losing a great deal of star power, OSU remains in the hunt for the Big 12 South title at 3-0 in league play. The team kept its perfect conference record intact with last weekend’s 34-7 rout of Baylor, Oklahoma State’s fifth straight win.

Gundy knows the kind of team his squad will be facing on Saturday.

“We’re playing a very, very good football team. I don’t think there is any question, depending on who you talk to, that this could probably be the best football team in the country.”

This series has gone Texas’ way almost exclusively, with OSU winning just two of the 23 all-time meetings (in 1944 and 1997). Mack Brown is a flawless 11-0 against the Cowboys. Despite the advantage heavily favoring the Longhorns in the series, the matchups of late have been very competitive, including last year’s 28-24 Texas victory in Austin.

Colt McCoy is one of the top quarterbacks in the country and played like it last time out against Missouri, completing an efficient 26-of-31 passes, for 269 yards and three TDs in the lopsided win.

Efficient play has not been a problem for this offenses, as Texas leads the nation in scoring (41.9 ppg). Balance is the key, with the Longhorns showing the ability to dominate both on the ground (164.0 ypg) and through the air (274.1 ypg).

McCoy has fought through illness and injury this season but has still completed a sterling 71.7 percent of his throws for 1,806 yards and 14 TDs. It doesn’t hurt to have one of the nation’s top receiving threats to go to downfield in Jordan Shipley (58 catches, for 713 yards and five TDs). Shipley is red-hot right now, coming off the Missouri game in which he hauled in seven balls, for 108 yards and two scores.

There aren’t many teams getting it done on defense the way Texas is. The Longhorns lead the nation in rush defense (41.3 ypg), rank second in total defense (235.6 ypg) and ninth in scoring defense (13.6 ppg).

The play along the defensive line is headlined by rush ends Sergio Kindle (team-high 9.0 TFLs, 2.0 sacks) and Sam Acho (7.0 TFLs, team-high 5.0 sacks). The linebacking corps features standout Roddrick Muckelroy (team-high 46 tackles, 7.0 TFLs, 2.0 sacks). Disruptive playmakers like LB Emmanuel Acho (8.0 TFLs) and tackle Lamarr Houston (8.0 TFLs) are also getting the job done in the front seven. Safety Earl Thomas (35 tackles, five INTs) is a ballhawk in the secondary.

Brown has very little to complain about in regards to his defense.

“The defense continues to play at a really high level. You can win championships with defense, and our guys are forcing much more turnovers than they did last year. We are really excited about watching them force turnovers and stop the running game and being physical on defense, and we need to continue to do that especially on the road.”

The OSU offense has had to make some adjustments with the loss of both All- Americans Dez Bryant and Kendall Hunter. While there is some good news with the probable return of Hunter this week, it was announced on Tuesday that Bryant’s current suspension will last through the 2009 season as ruled on by the NCAA.

The one constant this year has been the play of quarterback Zac Robinson. The veteran signal-caller has completed over 65 percent of his passes, for 1,547 yards, with 12 TDs and just three INTs.

Gundy has certainly recognized the play of his signal-caller of late.

“He’s playing well right now. He’s playing with more confidence. He’s managed the game very well. In my opinion, being a good quarterback is being able to manage the game in understanding what your strengths are and where their weaknesses are and try to attack those areas using what your strengths are as an offense. I think he’s done a pretty good job of that over the last few weeks.”

Robinson has also helped a ground game that is averaging a steady 185.6 yards per game, despite its best tailback being sidelined for five games. In Hunter’s absence, RB Keith Totson has emerged as a viable option, averaging 5.5 yards per carry and six TDs.

No one will be able to replace Bryant’s playmaking ability down the field, but Hubert Anyiam has done his best to help assuage the loss, pacing the team in receptions (23) going for 306 yards and two TDs.

While the OSU defense had some tough outings early in the season, it is playing much better of late, including a smothering performance at Baylor last week. The unit is giving up 20.0 ppg and while the pass defense has been suspect (253.1 ypg), the rush defense has been solid (99.0 ypg).

Senior middle linebacker Donald Booker has led by example this season and currently paces the team in total tackles (52), TFLs (6.0) and sacks (four). Senior strong safety Lucien Antoine (43 tackles, 5.0 TFLs, one sack, one INT and three forced fumbles) has played lights out in the secondary. Senior LB Patrick Levine (38 tackles, three TFLs, three INTs) contributes to a steady veteran corps of defenders in Stillwater.

The Longhorns are winding up a grueling four-game stretch and with Hunter’s likely return this week, this could be the perfect time for OSU to spring an upset and start to cloud up the BCS picture.

U-S-C at Oregon 10-31-09

October 31, 2009

(4) U-S-C (6-1) at (10) Oregon (6-1)

Saturday, October 31st, 8:00 p.m. (et)

GAME NOTES: A key pac-10 title takes place in Eugene this weekend, as the fourth-ranked USC Trojans invade Autzen Stadium to take on the 10th-ranked Oregon Ducks.

Pete Carroll’s Trojans avenged their only loss from 2008 with last weekend’s 42-36 shootout win over Oregon State. With the team’s fourth straight win, the seven-time Pac-10 champions moved to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.

Carroll realizes that there is no room for error in the conference.

“This is a huge matchup for us and I think the team that wins the conference is going to have to win out. You know, I think you’re going to have to do that. It’s going to be amazingly challenging throughout the schedule.”

The only team ahead of USC in the conference standings is Oregon. Since dropping the season-opener to Boise State, Chip Kelly’s Ducks have really turned things around, winning six in a row, including a 43-19 rout of Washington in Seattle last weekend to move to 4-0 in-conference.

USC holds a 37-16-2 advantage in the all-time series. These two teams have split the last 12 meetings, but the Trojans have won four of the last five, including a lopsided 44-10 decision last year.

Tailback Allen Bradford erupted for 147 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Trojans to the win over the Beavers last time out. The success of the ground game is nothing new for USC, which is averaging almost 200 yards per game rushing the football (198.3 ypg). With players like Bradford (7.4 ypc) and Joe McKnight (6.4 ypc) in the backfield, USC will continue to effectively run the ball.

The ground game makes things a lot easier on freshman QB Matt Barkley, who has played well despite his age. The youngster has completed just over 60 percent of his passes this year, for 1,540 yards and seven TDs. Barkley’s top target downfield is standout WR Damian Williams (34 receptions, for 525 yards, three TDs).

Despite the turnover on the defensive side of the football heading into 2009, the Trojans have actually thrived, holding opponents to just 15.1 ppg, thanks in large part to a stout run defense (79.9 ypg).

Forcing turnovers has not been easy (just nine in the first seven games), but a feverish pass rush (29 sacks) cannot be overlooked.

Up front, the team gets great pressure on the quarterback from rush ends Everson Griffin (29 tackles, 9.5 TFLs, 8.0 sacks) and Nick Perry (17 tackles, 8.0 TFLs, 7.0 sacks). The linebacking corps is highlighted by Chris Galippo (48 tackles, 5.0 TFLs, 1.5 sacks, one INT) and Michael Morgan (36 tackles, 10.5 TFLs, 4.0 sacks). The play in the secondary is led by two-time All- American Taylor Mays (team-high 49 tackles, one INT).

USC’s rush defense will be put to the ultimate test in Eugene, as Oregon possesses one of the top ground games in the country, averaging 210.7 yards per game (14th nationally), on 4.7 yards per carry.

The team lost a key piece to the ground attack in the season-opener with the suspension of LeGarrette Blount, but that has allowed freshman LaMichael James to emerge. James is averaging nearly seven yards per carry (6.9) and 105.0 yards per game. He is also responsible for six of the team’s 19 rushing scores to date and is a real concern for the Trojans according to Carroll.

“LaMichael is averaging 6.9 per carry so he is obviously had tremendous games, a lot of big, long break out plays where he’s leaving guys in the dust.”

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli has completed over 60 percent of his throws thus far, but is a real threat to run as well, netting 4.6 yards per carry and leading the team with seven TDs on the ground.

The passing attack nets just 157.4 yards per game, but opponents still have to concern themselves with standout tight end Ed Dickson (27 receptions, for 362 yards, four TDs).

The Oregon defense is just as responsible for Oregon’s success as the offense, if not more so. The stop unit for the Ducks is allowing just under 300 yards of offense per game (297.1) and it has led to a mere 16.7 ppg for the opposition. Big plays have been the norm, with the team registering 19 takeaways and 22 sacks.

Defensive end Kenny Rowe has been the team’s best pass rusher, coming off the edge to record seven sacks so far. Linebacker Casey Matthews (44 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one INT) has done a great job in the middle of the field. The secondary, which has had to deal with season-ending injuries to players like Willie Glasper (knee) and Walter Thurmond III (knee), still possesses playmakers like safeties Javes Lewis (44 tackles, one sack, two INTs, one fumble recovery) and John Boyett (43 tackles, two INTs) and cover corner Talmadge Jackson III (26 tackles, two INTs).

Coach Kelly has been impressed with the defensive effort of late.

“You know I think they play together, they have a great understanding of the system. The players know exactly how they fit within that system. They play with passion, there’s not one individual star on that side of the ball. We’ve obviously seen some injuries in the secondary, but everyone’s got a chance to step up, a chance to play. They’ve really done a good job, and it’s just really how well we practice and how well they prepare I think is the key to our success right now on defense.”

This one could very well decide the Pac-10 title. The seven-time champs are already a game back in the standings and if they struggle to get off to a good start here, the Ducks have the kind of ground game to preserve a lead and move a huge step toward a conference crown.

What is Sports Sustenance?

October 30, 2009

Almost all of the people, occupying this world, dream of being a sports superstar. You long for that feeling when thousands of fans scream your name when you are about to win a game. But unfortunately, only those with extreme discipline, hardwork and talent get to experience that.

[Talent is not the only secret of being a sports icon, it is also the way they get their nutrition.] You see, sports nutrition is different from normal nutrition because with sports nutrition, the athletes require more nutrients to keep their energy up during their various activities. Athletes perform strenuous activities, that is why more nutrients are needed to keep them running.

Athletes lose a lot of fluids during their game. And like everyone knows, dehydration is one of the biggest problems in the athletic world. Getting tired and thirsty will affect an athlete?s performance, just as it affects anyone else?s, except that it makes the life of an athlete a lot more difficult to live.

Everyone knows that an athlete’s performance is the reason why they get paid, seriously. So basically, if you are an athlete and you want to have that winning edge, then you better get that right nutrition. When you drink enough water and eat a balanced diet and also get the right sports nutrition, your body can utilize energy efficiently and also fuel top performance.

You can make the most of your athletic talents and have more strength, power and endurance when you get the right sports nutrition. These are not just for boasting purposes; however, athletes do have their own way of boasting the above mentioned attributes.

Your diet should be based on different factors and this should involve your age, size, physical condition and the type of sports you are engaging yourself in.

It is also important to consult a doctor about your diet and not just make it up yourself. Doctors have a license and they do know what they are doing. They can provide you with the correct advice and the proper food so that you can get as much nutrients as possible.

Exercise makes you lose plenty of liquids. Every time you are pumping your body, you are losing fluids through sweat. Hence, water is very essential when it comes to sports nutrition. It may not be the most important factor, but it is one of the top essentials Water makes up about sixty percent of a person’s body weight and it is a part of all your bodily processes.

As you probably already know, your body cannot produce and store water, this serves as the main reason why you should replace all fluids that you eliminate while doing your exercise, or else you will have to suffer being dehydrated. With athletes, they require more water than the normal eight glasses a day.

Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after any kind of sports activity to prevent over-heating and dehydration. At least try to drink the same amount of water you lose due to sweat. There are also various sports drinks that are good for longer events. Getting hydrated will definitely help boost your energy.

Eating a balanced diet is another key to sports nutrition. The right combination of calories from carbohydrates, proteins and fats gives you more energy for top performance. These nutrients perform certain actions that will help your body as you perform strenuous kinds of sports.

One important source of fuel is carbohydrates. It provides a minimum of sixty to a maximum of seventy percent of our calories. Carbohydrates are found on almost all of the food you consume. Fruits, vegetable, pastas, breads, cereals, rice and so many more contain carbohydrates.

Glucose is the main source of energy for the body, and it comes from carbohydrates. The glucose is also stores in various parts of out body like the liver and the kidney, providing you with a reservoir for energy. The more carbohydrates you have, the more energy you can give out. If you run out of carbohydrates, you can also get energy form proteins and fats.

As for proteins, they are available in meat, fish, poultry, eggs, beans, nuts and dairy products, to name a few. The minimum requirement of proteins from daily calories is 15 to a maximum of 20 percent. Proteins are essential for tissue and muscle build up. All these things help make provide you with proper sports nutrition that you need.

How People Become Addicted

October 30, 2009

Why do people become addicted? What is the fundamental mechanism? Of course, this question has been answered to varying degrees and in varying ways. Whether you consider the physical aspects of addiction where changes occur in the brain, or the psychological mechanism that triggers an addiction many theories already exist.

This article is strictly my opinion. It is my personal attempt to understand addiction and I don’t claim to have any scientific backing for my model of addiction. Nor do I seek any. I’m merely trying to understand addiction in terms that make sense to me personally. If this is useful to you in some way, then so much the better.

Addiction can be a powerful force in our lives. I hold that addiction occurs with each of us to varying degrees. Drug and alcohol addictions are the most obvious to us because their destructive effects are very evident. But what about those addictions that are not so obvious. Do you have a favorite food? A favorite song? Why do we choose one thing over another? Why do people choose differently?

On a purely physical realm it appears that our brains become stimulated in a certain way that we enjoy and therefore we are left with a memory that is pleasurably associated with a certain stimulus such as a sound or a taste or a sensation. Could this be the basis for addiction?

Since we are beings with an organic component, this makes complete sense. Once an impression is made on us it is either postivive or negative and we have a ‘feeling’ that goes with that. Being creatures that enjoy pleasure over pain we naturally seek to relive positive experiences and avoid negative ones.

Therefore, if we had an experience that triggered a negative feeling, such as the taste of garlic, then we may forever hate the taste of garlic. Yet, someone else’s early experience or experiences with garlic may have been quite pleasurable. Therefore, they actually enjoy the taste and smell of garlic even to the point that they always use it or cook with it.

Being similar in our organic components, how can such divergent reactions occur?
The only differential seems to be the original experience itself and how we reacted to it. That experience and reaction creates a record in our brains. This must be how two different brains can have such different reactions to the same substance or experience.

Then are we at the mercy of our first experience in regards to any particular stimuli?
Yes, if we don’t do anything about it. However, if we really exert our will, we should be able to change our reaction to virtually anything.

Therefore, through exertion of willpower an addiction, any addiction, should be defeatable. Of course, things are not necessarily that simple in the real world. But in principle and in my opinion, it seems to be this way.

Otherwise, we would simply be robots at the mercy of these addictions that exist to varying degrees. I think most people would agree that is not the case. Also, it would contradict the gift of freewill that I believe we all have been granted. There are some things that we don’t get to choose in this life yet there are many things that we may exert our personal choice over. I believe that addiction is one of those things we can choose not to have. Maybe it takes hard work to beat an addiction but I think we do have an option in this regard.

If I’m correct, then the most important component to beating an addiction is the willingness to do so, coupled by the intensity of the desire to beat the addiction. It seems certain that the person must be willing at some level to be rid of an addiction in order for that freedom to occur.

Soccer Coaching Tips:Turn Amateurs Into Professionals

October 30, 2009

Youth Soccer Coaching Tips

You will be amazed to see how big these soccer coaching tips can prove to be for your team. Does it bother you that your team is not taking the drills seriously, or that your plans are not working?

Take note of these winning instructions that will not just improve the morale of your players but also put them to winning ways.

1. Make Elaborate Preparations: It is only half battle won but is crucial to the achievement of your goals. Interact with the players in the team, gauge their opinions, give them due credit, and then use them in your plan. Only that success is sweet that comes within a time-frame you expected it to. As the days pass by, its importance begins to diminish. There should always be scope for improvements, big or small. Even the best plans stand the test of possible failure due to unforeseen circumstances. Flexible plans are the best plans.

2. Ensure that the players have great workouts: When the drills are the same day after day, the kids are bound to shy away from practice and you cannot blame them. Use different forms to introduce the element of fun and excitement. For example, once the regular drill is done with, you can divide them into smaller groups and introduce fun games that not only relax their mind but also promote team spirit among them.

3. Be strict as well as friendly: You can be successful as a coach only when you keep the players within the boundary of rules. These soccer coaching tips can do wonders to your team.
Ensure that the players have sufficient time to interact with each other and exchange meaningful dialog. This also gives them opportunity to explore themselves. It is also a good idea to take them out for camping or any other excursion for a day.

4. Be supportive and tolerant: Encourage your team to try new things and when you do so, also be tolerant of the mistakes that they make in the process. Being harsh towards mistakes can prevent a kid from trying new things. This is not at all desirable and therefore you must find a way out to correct the issues without reprimanding the players. Your success as a coach is measured by how well the kids are able to execute new ideas or recover from failures. That is the yardstick of your performance.

5. Maintain Harmony and good judgment: A soccer field is where you will appreciate true skills of the players. A winning team blends the positive points of all the players, although there are negative points as well. You can use your strong players to bring the ones who aren’t up to the mark to the desired level. Every player has something to give to the team. However, you can always uplift the performances of some of the players in the team by helping them learn from their peers. Grouping the players is a great idea so that they can learn from each other.

Youth soccer coaching is a dynamic and difficult job. It is difficult to make players deliver under excessive strain. However, these soccer coaching tips will help you get the best out of your players and the team. The next step? To take what you’ve just learned, implement it, and join our youth soccer coaching community so you can learn more and dramatically improve your coaching skills.

Introducing Perfume And Cologne

October 30, 2009

The first Cologne is inspiration to have been produced appearing in Koln, Germany, in 1792; legend has it that the“process” for the earliest cologne was produced by a Carthusian holy man in hiding who gave it to Wilhelm Mulhense as a bridal gift, calling it “Sensation Water” because of its salutary properties.
Wilhelm began producing and advertising the “Sensation Water,” which was an immediate hit among his male associates, and began calling it Cologne, the French title for the city of Koln.  His Cologne was called 4711” after the street address of his depot, and is expected to include had a refreshing citrus base.  4711 is still produced at this time, although the Mulhense collection sold their cologne production resource to Wella in 1994.
