Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees

GAME NOTES: The North Carolina Tar Heels have the unenviable task of playing the 14th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies under the lights in Blacksburg on Thursday night. Virginia Tech owns a 16-9-6 series advantage over North Carolina, which includes five straight wins over the Tar Heels.

This is the second consecutive Thursday night game for North Carolina. Last week, the Heels jumped out to a 17-3 lead over Florida State, only to fall by a 30-27 final in front of a heart-broken home crowd. UNC got off to a promising 3-0 start to the campaign, but the team is now 4-3 overall, including a bitterly disappointing 0-3 in ACC play.

Virginia Tech opened the season with a tough loss to Alabama before running off five consecutive victories. That winning streak came to an end last time out, however, as the Hokies fell to Georgia Tech by a 28-23 final on the road. They have had almost two full weeks to prepare for this affair, so expect a fresh group for coach Frank Beamer.

“I told our team that I was proud of our effort,” said Beamer after the tough loss to Georgia Tech. “It wasn’t for a lack of effort or not caring. Now we just need to come back and get the next one. Theres a lot of football left to be played. We just need to get back, think about the next one and go get it.”

North Carolina is a mediocre offensive team at best, as the club is averaging a mere 23.1 ppg and 289.4 total ypg. The Tar Heels average just 3.6 yards per rushing attempt and 9.9 yards per pass completion, so there is room for improvement in both aspects of the game. There are some obvious shortcomings for the offense, as it has made good on only 30 percent of its third down conversion attempts. Also, 17 turnovers have hurt the cause to say the least.

T.J. Yates is the team’s starting quarterback, and he has connected on 59 percent of his passes for 1,028 yards and seven touchdowns with eight interceptions. Greg Little leads the club with 33 catches, but the fact that those connections have resulted in just 290 yards and one touchdown suggest that Little is more of a possession receiver than a vertical threat. Shaun Draughn leads the ground attack with 481 yards, while Ryan Houston, who has just 221 yards, has seven touchdowns.

Opponents are scoring only 16.4 ppg against North Carolina, which is permitting a mere 266.3 total ypg. The Tar Heels are limiting foes to 102.6 rushing ypg at a clip of 2.8 yards per carry. They have been terrific against the pass as well, holding foes to 9.0 yards per completion with only four passing scores and eight interceptions. Robert Quinn is a big-time player for the Heels, as he has 11 TFLs, of which seven have been sacks.

Against Florida State last weekend, North Carolina finished with 333 total yards and three offensive touchdowns. The Heels ran the ball for 238 yards and two scores on 41 attempts, and Draughn led the charge with 126 yards on 23 totes. As for Yates, he struggled under center, completing a mere 12-of-25 passes for 64 yards and one touchdown with one interception.

The Tar Heels played tremendous defense early on against FSU last week, but things seemed to fall apart in the second half. Overall, UNC permitted 438 yards, including 395 passing yards on 33-of-40 completions. Sure, the Heels had a pair of sacks and an interception, but those big plays were overshadowed by an otherwise shaky effort.

“We looked at this game as though it could have been the turning point in our season,” said defensive end E.J. Wilson. “But we lost, and we’re not going to let this ruin our season. It’s one loss.”

“It’s either you stand up to the challenge or you back down,” added cornerback Kendric Burney. “I definitely know that me and my teammates are going to stand up to the challenge. I will never let anybody on this team quit and I definitely am looking ready to next week.”

Virginia Tech is scoring 32.6 ppg this season while posting 380.0 total ypg. With 25 offensive touchdown in seven outings, quarterback Tyrod Taylor and company have certainly got the job done. Taylor is a much improved player who has become a much more than just a runner. He has completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,154 yards and nine touchdowns with only three interceptions, deferring to star freshman tailback Ryan Williams to handle the rushing duties. Williams has racked up 834 yards and 10 touchdowns while posting 6.0 yards per carry. Jarrett Boykin paces the receivers with 21 grabs for 367 yards and three scores.

As is usually the case, Virginia Tech has been a strong defensive team this season. The Hokies are allowing 19.1 ppg this season to go along with 317.4 total ypg, solid numbers by most standards. While it is a bit concerning that the club is allowing 13.8 yards per pass completion, the fact that it has permitted a mere 85-of-193 passes to be completed is certainly impressive. Barquell Rivers leads Tech in tackles with 59, and Cody Grimm has forced three fumbles. As for Rashad Carmichael, he has registered three interceptions.

In the disappointing loss to Georgia Tech last time out, Taylor was limited to 159 passing yards and one touchdown pass with a pair of costly interceptions. Taylor did rush for 63 yards and a score, while Williams added 100 yards and a touchdown, but the offense couldn’t do enough to claim the road victory.

Georgia Tech relies almost entirely on its ground attack to move the ball and score points, and while the Hokies knew that going into the clash, they simply couldn’t stop the Yellow Jackets. Beamer watched on as his defense was shredded for 309 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 63 carries.

“I think you have to give Georgia Tech credit,” Beamer said. “They gave great effort and they played fast, and their quarterback did a great job.”

Virginia Tech will bounce back strong from the loss to Georgia Tech by beating North Carolina soundly. Williams will be too much for UNC to handle, as he has five 100-yard rushing efforts this season, a Tech freshman record.

I am going to write about the elements of luck which I have been witnessing whilst watching this years world snooker championship.

I am not a snooker player myself – I am actually involved with stuttering therapy and offering a cost reduction service whereby people are able to obtain cheap calls.

A kick

I am sure that most snooker players are aware of what a kick is, in snooker. Basically the ball lifts from the bed of the table and can cause the shot to go offline which can easily cause a missed attempted pot, the positional side to go astray or the safety shot to go wrong.

Many experts have being trying to work out why these kicks happen, to attempt to remove them from the game. As you may well be aware they have not managed to come up with the answers or solutions as yet.

A ball drifting offline

I watched a match last night where the player attempted a pot into a middle pocket. He had played the shot with a lack of pace to give it every chance as it were and it was heading straight into the middle of the pocket. At the last moment is seemed to roll offline and it hit the jaw of the pocket, his opponent then cleared up the rest of the balls to win the frame.

The player looked in disgust as the table for whatever reason had not played true, the commentators were also at a loss to explain it and even said that it had been a problem all week. When the table had been set up various people had spent hours rolling balls up and down to check for any problems but there had not been any. The commentator commented that with the large crowd in the arena and the atmosphere, that this could affect the roll of the table.

A dodgy bounce off a cushion

A number of the players had been badly affected by a bad bounce off one of the cushions where it seems to spring off too quickly. This again can affect their safety or positional play, which again can result in them losing a frame.

If a player has a few of these bits of bad luck early in a match, whether it be from a kick, a ball rolling offline or by a dodgy bounce off a cushion, they can quickly find themselves three or four frames behind.

1. Micheal Jordan

Jordan really didn’t have much weakness in his basketball game. He was a relentless defender as witnessed by his 9 All defensive 1st team selections and also winning a defensive player of the year award. He was also by far the most dominant offensive force of his generation, routinely having to battle double and triple teams every game yet still scoring at a career 30.1 PPG pace. Clutch shooting was also his forte as he hit so many game winning shots and his stats only improved in the playoffs when it really mattered. Micheal Jordan had 10 Scoring tiles, 5 season MVP awards, 6 Finals MVP awards and 6 championship titles.

2. Wilt Chamberlain

Statistically Wilt Chamberlain should be number one on this list. In a single game he once scored 100 pts by himself! In another game he scored 58 pts and pulled down 45 rebounds. His most amazing stat I think is that he never once fouled out of a NBA game in his entire career. He had absolutely off the chart career numbers 30.1 PPG, 22.9 RPG, .540 FGP %. Chamberlain was over 7 ft tall, could run and jump like a gazelle and was one of the strongest men on two feet. On the downside Wilt only won one NBA championship and was a notorious poor free throw shooter.

He may have won more championships if he didn’t have to face the great Celtics team of his era almost every year in the playoffs.

3. Bill Russell

You can not argue with winning and Bill Russell and his Celtics won 11 and I repeat 11 NBA Championships.

Not much more to say about Bill other then he was a fierce competitor, tenacious rebounder, consumate team player and a born winner.

4. Kareem Abdul Jabbar

Where to start, Most total points in the NBA ever at 38,387. Kareem won 6 NBA Championships with career averages of

24.6 PPG and 11.2 RPG. Jabbar was a basketball phenom and his famed “Sky-hook” was his unblockable signature shot that kept finding the twine for 1560 NBA games.

5. Larry Bird

Larry “legend” Bird was a renowned clutch shooter, equally adept at the 3 point line and the free throw. Bird won 3 NBA Championships and 3 season MVP awards finishing his career with averages of 24.3 ppg and 10 rpg. A great team player and leader who could back up any of his trash talk on the court.

6. Magic Johnson

Johnson put the show in “Showtime” in Los Angeles. His behind the back passes, amazing shots and flair for the dramatic were all part of his game. Magic was a towering PG who could play all 5 positions on the court.

5 NBA Championships and 3 Season MVP awards are just some of the numerous awards in Johnson’s great NBA career.

Magic Johnson could have easily been # 5 on this list but I could only choose one.

7. Jerry West

Jerry West also know as “Mr. Clutch” was an all star every year for 14 years he played in the NBA . West led his Lakers to the NBA finals 9 times in his career winning only 1 championship. 6 of those finals losses would come to the great Celtics team of his era. West was a perfectionist at his craft and was known to be a great defender and excellent shot. Only one player Micheal Jordan has a higher scoring average in the NBA playoffs then Jerry West. Career averages of 27 ppg, 6.7 Apg and 5.8 RPG reflect his basketball greatness.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s sky hook was unstoppable. Even at 41, as his extension and agility had faded away, Kareem still commanded a double team because of the devastation a team would face at the mercy of the unblockable sky hook.

Billy Cunningham, doing the color commenting, summed up the indelible legacy Abdul-Jabbar left on the game when he said “I played in All-Star games with him, I coached All-Star games against him and now I am broadcasting a game he’s playing in”.

No player’s domination would ever span generations the way Kareem’s did and in this All-Star game, one of his last, Kareem would fittingly become the All-Star games leading scorer. Out of 39 All-Star games played at that point, Kareem appeared in nearly 20 of them. A man who’s antisocial nature and uncharismatic approach with the media left his accomplishments often forgotten or unmentioned by today’s NBA scholars. This game, however, is a testament to the undeniable impact he left on the sport.

The NBA’s greatest winner, Bill Russell (then the coach of the Kings) looked on from the audience at the champions of the 70′s and 80′s such as Kareem, Magic, Bird, Mo Cheeks and Moses Malone were flanked by emerging champions of the 90′s such as Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas and Hakeem Olajuwan.

In a form of poetic justice, just three years removed from the East All-Stars “Freeze-Out”on Jordan, Larry Bird looked for Michael on every play routing for his Air-ness to win the MVP in his home town.

There was one man who was most missed on this All-Star Sunday. The man who created the most exciting highlight reels in the history of the game. Julius Erving, the Ambassador of NBA basketball, retired before the 1988 season started and, for the first time in his life, looked on from the stands with pride as Bird and Magic seemed to be holding the torch he passed just fine.

In an era when the Eastern Conference dominated the NBA, it was fitting that they ended up winning that game. Jordan scored 40 point and It was a pretty decisive win by the Eastern All-Stars but that didn’t deter the Western squad from competing to the very end.

No professional athlete can boast such a claim.

I consider myself to be a somewhat astute NBA historian and yet I had to research all of Jordan’s accolades online as to not forget any.

The team lost many important individuals to murders and suicides; their bus met with an accident injuring many of their players and it was bad news all the way. It was even said that some sort of a curse has been put in the team. Many believed that the Angels baseball stadium was under a curse because it was built on an ancient Indian burial ground. In 1996 in hope of rescuing the Angels baseball, the Walt Disney Inc took complete control over Angels. Up until then, they were sharing the ownership with a few other companies but with Disney’s involvement, The Angels baseball team had to be renamed as Anaheim Angels. This is something that was largely opposed by fans however; the Angels had no choice but to move forward. In 2002 they won their first world title. But later Disney sold Angels to Angels baseball and the team is now called as Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

BMW entered Formula One in 1982 by supplying engines to the Brabham team. The M12 was a 1.5 liter turbo four cylinder racing engine that led to winning the world championship in 1983. A first for Goodwood Revival this weekend….none other than the Vulcan flew in to demonstrate its formidable presence in the skies. A huge monster with a roar to match its gigantic proportions…I’ve never heard anything like it. It doesn’t instil the same emotion as the Lancaster for me but my goodness what a treat.

And now for one of my favourite races, the Lavant Cup, a 60 minute extravaganza of deep throated Aston Martins, Jaguars, Ferraris, Porsches and Lotus’ with Sir Stirling racing his own OSCA alongside Richard Attwood. Unfortunately Sir Stirling only managed a handful of laps and after entering the pit a couple of times reluctantly retired from the race with car trouble.

Penultimate race was the Glover Trophy followed by the last race of the day, the Fordwater Trophy, which by all accounts was indeed the most exciting race of the day and which was missed by a few when after a tiring full day, they decided to beat the crowds and leave early…I bet they don’t do that again!

I am not a huge fan of Formula One but a lot of great technology comes out of the sport, especially in engine development. What other company makes superior engines to BMW and Ferrari?

My objective is to inform you of all areas of the golf swing, so that when these situations arise, you can adjust accordingly. And ultimately check points pre established.

  • The player(s) back shoulder in his/her backswing dips down; meaning that the back shoulder is lowering towards the ground. This is difficult to do when you have no lateral movement or weight shift back and away from the target, as we teach. However, this is very common among golfers who have a horizontal swing plane. The tendency is to lower the back shoulder as your swing plane becomes more horizontal.
  • It’s important to understand that if you dip your back shoulder in your backswing this could cause many different problems in you swing. Your timing, hand position at impact, weight shift through the golf ball, and follow-through position could all be negatively affected.

Solution

  • Fortunately there is simple solution. Venture to the practice range and take a golf ball. Put the golf ball underneath your back foot (please make sure that ½ the ball is in the ground so that you don’t fall over). If a ball is uncomfortable use a towel or something that is at least an inch off the ground. The ball/object should be placed under your back heel in order to ensure that you have no weight transfer and that your back shoulder does not dip in your backswing.
  • Then simply take your normal swing. If you choose you can hit a ball or you can just take a couple practice swings. First,focus on not dipping your shoulder in your backswing (keep your back shoulder up and not down). I guarantee that if you conquer this drill you will make solid contact with the ball on a more consistent basis.
  • This drill will cause you to practice a swing with no weight shift back and away from your target and simultaneously help you with dipping your back shoulder.
