Tonight the Phoenix Suns make the trip to Houston to take on the Rockets.    The home team here is laying three points.  Both teams for all intensive purposes have identical records, the Suns are 27-21 while the Rockets are 25-21.  The Rockets at home are always a tough out so we like the home team tonight.

Couple that with the fact that the general gambling public is all over the Suns, about 85%, we really like the Rockets in this spot.  Whenever the public really likes an underdog we see that as a red flag.  As you know from reading about our gambling strategies we like to bet against the public.  However, when the public is all over the dog, we like it even that much better.

Today is the big day.  The day that we all have been waiting for.  The anticipation has killed us.  No not really, but today is the day of the Pro Bowl.  It is an NFL game and there is a line to bet on. So we have looked at the game and the total sort of jumps out at us.  The total is 57. 

Normally with such a high total we would be inclined to look at the total and say: “Why is it so high, it must be high for a reason and therefore we should take the over”  At least that is how we think.  However, in this game I see a bunch of very good offensive players getting together that have not played in a long time and not together at all.  I don’t think all of that will translate into a high scoring affair.  Go with the under but don’t go crazy.  We have been killing it in college hoops so save your money for those wagers and thank us when it is all said and done.

Will Tiger make a comeback this year? 1-31-10

So we all know the Tiger Woods drama by now.  Let’s just say that he was a bit less than the ideal husband and father to his family.  What’s next?  Have we all forgotten that he is the greatest golfer ever to walk the face of the planet, quite possibly the greatest athlete to ever play any sport (of course that is only is you count golf as a sport). 

Will Tiger make a comeback this year and play in a major tournament?  I say yes.  He needs to realize that the sooner he comes public the quicker his healing process will begin.  It is great that he is at a sex clinic right now and that he is doing whatever he needs to do behind closed doors, however, he needs to get his face back out in the public so that this entire situation can run it’s course.

Now of course it will never go away.  But, like anything else, it will get easier with time.  My best advice to Tiger is to come out and openly tell everyone what he did, get a divorce ( I only say this because I believe that because of the nature of what he did he cannot salvage his marriage) and start playing golf again.  If he divorces his wife then there are no more trust issues to answer to, or worse, this whole thing will not happen again.  If Tiger is just a single guy leading the single life, well, that is a story but not nearly as good of the one he just gave us. 

The fact of the matter is that Tiger Woods is a great golfer and we want to see him out there crushing drives out of the tte box as soon as possible.  The quicker he steps back on to the course the faster he can at least attempt to put this entire episode behind him and move on to the next chapter in his life.  Will Tiger make a comeback this year?  Yes, or at least he should and the people surrounding him should be pushing for this.  Once he is out on the course where he belongs all other elements of his life might suddenly seem clearer.  The fans might be ruthless and relentless at first, but that is our rights as fans.  He will need to take a lot of verbal abuse and tough questioning but in the end Tiger will come out just fine on the other side.

Kurt Warner: Put him in! 1-30-10

Kurt Warner thanked God, hugged his children and wife and said goodbye to an NFL career that truly was a fairytale for the young football player out there in America.   Little girls have Cinderella and Snow White, little football players have Kurt Warner.

The 38-year-old quarterback announced his retirement Friday after a dozen years in a league that at first would not give him a chance to play and then ultimately embraced him as he came from nowhere to lead the lowly St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls.

Then, as if going from stocking groceries to winning NFL MVP awards wasn’t improbable enough, Warner was written off as a has-been.  He went to the New York Giants and was viewed as a player that could no longer get teh job done.   Yet he emerged from the dead one more time to lead the long-suffering Arizona Cardinals to an improbable visit to the Super Bowl.

A man of deep faith who carried a Bible to each post-game news conference, Warner walked away with a year left on a two-year, $23 million contract, knowing he still had the skills to play at the highest level.  Money was not the most important thing to him.  He did what his heart, family and body were telling him to do. 

Unlike Brett Favre, we know this is it for Kurt.  He has made a decision that we know he will stick with.  Now the only thing left is whether or not Kurt Warner is a Hall of  Famer.

The only strikes against him are the facts that he got off to a late start, not playing his first game until he was 28 in the NFL.  All of his statistics and accomplishments are equal or beyond others who have made the Hall of Fame at the coveted quarterback position.  My vote is YES.  Kurt Warner is absolutely a Hall of Famer and a living reminder to our children that anything is possible if you put your mind and heart into it.

It is hard to find value in a game like this, but there is.  The Wizards escaped New Jersey last night with a two point win.  The Wizards have had many games where they have played good teams very competitively throughout the course of the season, they also have a bad habit of playing down to the competition as well.  Tonight the Knicks travel to Washington as a one point underdog and they will be able to catch the Wizards off guard here.

Go with the New York Knicks tonight as they will score an easy victory against the Wizards who just have shown no consistency throughout the course of the entire season.

2010 Pro Bowl Blunder: 1-29-10

Do you really care about the Pro Bowl?  I already know the answer for it is a rhetorical question.  Nobody cares.  The only two reasons anyone even pays a little bit of attention to it is because it is one more game to bet on and it usually extends the NFL season for one more week.

This year the NFL really screwed up by trying to make a change for the better that really blew up in their face.  The Pro Bowl is this weekend and interest could not be lower.  This game takes away from the two week build of of the Super Bowl.  Sometimes that anticipation can seem like a bit much but the two teams who made it this far deserve all of the attention in my opinion, not the Pro Bowl.

On top of all this the Superbowl players a being required to attend the Pro Bowl and stay until half-time if they are to collect their bonus stipend.  This is completely idiotic.  Now they have to leave their respective teams for the weekend and focus on other things than preparation for the big game.  Both the Saints and the Colts have several Pro Bowl players and they will be forced to leave for the Pro Bowl.

Lastly, one of the only reasons that the players enjoyed playing in the Pro Bowl was the journey to Hawaii.  Now they put it in Florida.  What is the fun in that.  The players enjoyed the privacy that Hawaii offered and used it as a well deserved vacation after a long season.  They took that away as well.  Hopefully the NFL will reconsider and change things back to the way that they were moving forward.

The Pro Bowl was never a perfect situation as it was.  Players risk injury by playing in this game that could end their career.  It means nothing.  However, at least the Hawaii venue after the Superbowl provided a few bonuses for players and fans.  Again, hopefully they can fix the 2010 Pro Bowl blunder moving forward.

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic: 1-28-10

On Thursday a battle of Eastern conference heavyweights unfolds as the Boston Celtics head to Orlando to take on the Magic.  The Magic enter the contest as a 3.5 point favorite on their home court.  The general public seems to be all over the Boston Celtics in this one as you might expect.

The Celtics are 29-13 overall on the season and a very impressive 16-6 on the road, however, they are just 11-11 against the spread on the road.  As for the Magic they hold a 29-16 overall record with an impressive 16-4 on their home court, however, they are just 10-9 against the spread at home.

On Christmas day Boston defeated Orlando in Orlando as a 5.5 point underdog.  They are dogs here again but they won’t have the same success that they did back in December.

The future of Lebron James 1-28-10

Where will the King end up in 2010 for next season.  Many teams are hopeful that they can land Lebron in quite possibly the greatest free agent signing in history.  The choice will ultimately be his and only his, but has he already made up his mind or is he still pondering all of his options.

We would all have to assume that Cleveland is the front runner.  He is from the area and deeply rooted there right now.  He has a relationship with the city and has brought them to elite status in the NBA.  At least regular season success.  The Cleveland Cavaliers still have not come close to obtaining an NBA title and the way the team is built right now they are a long ways from that.  They can dominate throughout the regular season but they are not a true post-season threat.  So will Lebron use this as motivation to stay in Cleveland and lead them to the ever so coveted NBA championship or will he look to greener pastures to teams that are more geared towards winning right now.   That is for him to decide, but if he were looking elsewhere, where would he look.

New York:  The Knicks are a scrappy little team and are on the upside after ridding themselves of some bad contracts.  The King’s good friend CC Sabathia of the World Champion New York Yankees has lobbied for Lebron to come to the Big Apple telling him of the great city and the best fans.  But the Knicks are not the Yankees, far from it in fact and moving from Cleveland to New York with the goal of winning a championship would actually be a step backwards right now.

Orlando or Miami:  Both of these teams might be top contenders for Lebron because of many factors.  both teams are very good right now, especially the Magic, and the acquisition of Lebron might be the recipe for an instant NBA title.  On top of the basketball factors the state of Florida requires no state tax and we all know that the weather is second to none.  Superstars hang out in Florida in the winter and he is attracted to the limelight.  Either of these teams might ultimately be where Lebron ends up due to the external factors that would affect him in a positive way off of the court.  the future of Lebron James is still up in the air, but if he does not stay in Cleveland, look for the Sunshine State to snatch him up.

The San Antonio Spurs hope to avoid a season-high fourth straight loss when they resume a lengthy homestand tonight versus the Atlanta Hawks at the AT&T Center.

San Diego Chargers: Will this core ever win? 1-27-10

This Chargers team is a very good team that always seems to come up short year after year.  Is it the coaching staff, the players, an individual or a curse.  I don’t know.  What I do know is that this very good Chargers team is running out of time to secure a championship.

On the offensive side of the ball the team is led by Phillip Rivers.  He is a great quarterback in a great system for him.  He has the mentality of a linebacker at the quarterback position.  He is a fiery leader and his teammates like to play with him and they respect him.  At the running back position you now have the emergence of the two-headed monster with L Tomlinson and D Sproles.  Tomlinson’s window is undoubtedly closing faster than the others on the team due to the severity of playing his position.  Sproles is a tough little running back who has filled in admirably in the recent absences of L Tomlinson.  Together they have the ability to make defenses miss and are always a threat of rattling off a huge touchdown run.  The passing attack has become lethal with the emergence of Vincent Jackson over the past two years.  He has become a real deep threat to compliment tight end phenom Antonio Gates.  This one two punch has given defenses fits throughout the course of the season.  So what is the problem?  The problem is the defense.

The defense is pretty good, in fact, better than average.  However, as the Jets showed the superior defenses win playoff games.  The Jets came into San Diego and played a very good defensive game with their top-rated defense in the league.  Again, their defense is OK, just not a dominating factor throughout the course of a football game.  they need to step up their personnel and possibly hire a more aggressive defensive coordinator.  Until they get a defense that cant match the intensity of their offensive attack they will always find and early exit throughout the playoffs.  In the very weak AFC West they will continue to dominate and win their division for years to come but need to better their defense before they achieve their Superbowl dreams.  A clutch field goal kicker might held as well.  Kaeding who is usually money, really choked in the Chargers sole playoff game this year against the Jets.

The Chargers make sure they don’t let the window close without a Superbowl victory, but it is closing at a rapid pace and they must get it done in the next two years.  San Diego Chargers:  Will this core ever win?   Yes. Next year.  You heard it here first.

LA Lakers at Washington Wizards 1-26-10

Tonight at 7:00 EST the Spartans who are ranked fifth in the country head to Michigan to take on the Wolverines.  The line opened up at Michigan State giving 4.5.  We like Michigan in this spot to rise to the occasion and possibly even knock off the fifth ranked Spartans tonight in front of the home crowd.

The general betting public is viewing this game as an easy winner on the side of Michigan State and that is one of the reasons that we really like the opposite side.  The four and a half points should be a nice cushion for the Wolverines and I would look for them to score the outright upset.  Michigan is slowly heading back in the right direction for the program and this would be a huge lift for them if they could secure the victory tonight.

Favre’s Future in the NFL: 1-26-10

So we all got a chance to enjoy a wonderful football game on Sunday evening when the Vikings lost a close one to the Saints for the NFC championship.   The Vikings had numerous chances to win the game but their propensity to put the ball on the ground or in the hands of the men wearing black uniforms ultimately cost them a trip to the Superbowl.

What does this all mean for Brett Favre?  Did anybody else cringe when he rolled right and threw across his body right into three defenders, just like he had done two years ago in the same game against the Giants when he was still the fearless leader of the Green Bay Packers.  That interception while some will criticize and say he should know better, or when is going to learn, is what makes Favre so great.  Hear me out, I know that he needed to make a better decision in that situation, in fact as we all know, if he would have just tucked the ball and ran forward he probably would have made it to approximately the thirty yard line setting up a potential game winning 47 yard field goal.  But Favre always feels that he can make the play that is needed.  He lives and dies by that mentality and that is why many of us love watching him play the game.

Favre at forty had his best statistical season yet.  That is utterly amazing.  He didn’t play like someone who was forty.  Will he come back next year?  I sure hope so.  He is good for this game that we appreciate so much.  We all could do without his flip-flop attitude when it comes to retirement over the past two years but when it comes down to it, whether you love him or hate him, we all would like to see him under center next year.  He brings a youthful enthusiasm to the game that many twenty five year old players lack and for that I respect him.  He reminds me of the guy who would be the automatic QB in a pick-up game behind the local Junior High School.  I am not a Packer fan or a Vikings fan but I definitely a Brett Favre fan.  Now I believe that the only question is can his body hold up.  He took an absolute beating on Sunday from a relentless Saints defense.  If his body can take it, he should be back because Favre’s future in the NFL looks good to me.

On Monday night we have a serious Big East clash as the Hoyas invade the Carrier Dome to take on the Syracuse Orange men.   Georgetown enters the contest with a 15-3 record while Syracuse has only lost once this year and have racked up nineteen wins already this season.  Syracuse is a 5.5 point favorite in this contest and rightfully so.  The Orange men have been crushing the line this year as they are 12-4.  The Hoyas are 8-6 this season so far against the point spread.

I look for the Orangemen to get it done big time tonight in front of their home crowd.  Syracuse seems to be gaining momentum and experience with each game played and that will continue tonight as they tally their twentieth win and cruise to a double digit victory.
