PGA TOUR
BYRON NELSON CHAMPIONSHIP
TPC Four Seasons Resort Las Colinas, Irving, Texas -

Rory Sabbatini won last year’s Byron Nelson Championship for his first PGA Tour title since another Texas tournament, the 2007 Crowne Plaza Invitational.

Sabbatini’s fifth tour win came in record-setting fashion, as his 19-under-par 261 total bested the old tournament mark of 262 set by Loren Roberts and Steve Pate in 1999.

[Rory Sabbatini]
Rory Sabbatini set the Byron Nelson Championship scoring record with his 19-under-par 261 last year.
The outspoken South African improved to 4-4 when holding at least a share of the 54-hole lead, carding a six-under 64 in the final round to beat England’s Brian Davis by two shots.

Sabbatini, who has fallen to No. 68 in the world rankings, will be back to defend his title against a field that includes only four players ranked in the top 25.

No. 17 Hunter Mahan is the highest-ranked player entered in the tournament. Also playing are No. 19 Y.E. Yang, No. 23 Sean O’Hair and No. 25 Kenny Perry.

Besides Sabbatini, other past Byron Nelson champions in the field include Scott Verplank, Brett Wetterich, Ted Purdy and Vijay Singh.

Phil Mickelson withdrew from last year’s Byron Nelson after his wife, Amy, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Sabbatini wore a pink shirt for the final round and, along with many of the players, pinned a pink ribbon to his hat in support of the Mickelsons.

Golf Channel will have three hours of coverage of the first two rounds this week beginning at 3 p.m. (et) both days. CBS will broadcast in the same time slot on the weekend.

The tour wraps up its three-event Texas swing next week at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, where Steve Stricker won last year. Adam Scott kicked off the Lone Star State swing with a win at the Texas Open on Sunday.

EUROPEAN TOUR
BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
Wentworth Club, Surrey, England -

World No. 8 Paul Casey is the defending champion at this week’s BMW PGA Championship, the flagship event of the European Tour.

Last year, Casey carded four straight rounds of 69 or better on the way to beating Ross Fisher by a shot at 17-under 271. The victory — Casey’s 10th on the European Tour — vaulted the Englishman to No. 3 in the world rankings.

Ten of the top 25 players in the world rankings will be in the field this year, including No. 3 Lee Westwood, No. 6 Ian Poulter, No. 7 Ernie Els, No. 8 Casey, No. 9 Rory McIlroy, No. 11 Martin Kaymer, No. 13 Padraig Harrington, No. 18 Luke Donald, No. 21 Henrik Stenson and No. 24 Charl Schwartzel.

Three-time winner Colin Montgomerie and two-time champion Anders Hansen will lead a list of former tournament victors that also includes Miguel Angel Jimenez, David Howell, Scott Drummond and Ignacio Garrido.

In short, Wentworth Club is the best place in the world to see tournament golf this week.

Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds.

Next week the European Tour shifts to Spain for the Madrid Masters, where Ross McGowan won last year.

LPGA TOUR
SYBASE MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
Hamilton Farm Golf Club, Gladstone, New Jersey -

This is a new event on the LPGA Tour schedule featuring a field of 64 players.

The match play bracket will be broken down into four groups named for the LPGA’s winningest players: Kathy Whitworth, Mickey Wright, Annika Sorenstam and Patty Berg.

The tournament’s No. 1 seed, top-ranked Jiyai Shin of South Korea, will lead the Whitworth Group. Second-ranked Ai Miyazato of Japan will headline the Wright Group, No. 3 Suzann Pettersen of Norway will lead the Sorenstam Group and No. 4 Yani Tseng of Taiwan will head the Berg Group.

The field will include most of the tour’s top stars, including Michelle Wie and last week’s playoff winner in Alabama, Se Ri Pak. Injured star Paula Creamer will miss another tournament.

Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds. Its broadcast will run from 1-3 p.m. (et) on Thursday and Friday, and from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Next week the tour is in Brazil for the HSBC Brasil Cup 2010, where Catriona Matthew won last year. The event features a 27-player field competing over 36 holes for $700,000 of unofficial prize money.

NATIONWIDE TOUR
REX HOSPITAL OPEN
TPC Wakefield Plantation, Raleigh, North Carolina -

At last year’s Rex Hospital Open, veteran pro Kevin Johnson beat Jeff Gallagher with a birdie on the first playoff hole to capture his fifth Nationwide Tour win.

Two weeks later, Johnson also won the Knoxville Open for his sixth title on the developmental circuit, tying him for first place all-time with Matt Gogel, Jason Gore and Sean Murphy.

The victories helped Johnson earn a PGA Tour card for this season. But he has not fared well in the big leagues in 2010, making just three cuts in 10 starts and earning only $51,458.

This week’s field includes all of the players ranked inside the top 10 on the money list, including money leader Kevin Chappell and last week’s winner in South Carolina, Justin Hicks.

Next week is the Melwood Prince George’s County Open, where Mathias Gronberg won last year.

Orlando, FL – Despite being out of action with an injury, Tiger Woods has added the British Open Championship to his schedule according to his website.

Woods has claimed two of his three British Open titles at this year’s host venue, the Old Course at St. Andrews. His first victory there in 2000 made him the youngest player to capture the modern career Grand Slam.

That year, Woods finished at 19-under par giving him the record for lowest score in relation to par. Then in 2005, Woods won his second British Open at St. Andrews and in doing so became the second player to win the career Grand Slam twice.

Woods’ second title at St. Andrews came the week Jack Nicklaus retired from competitive golf. Nicklaus is the only other player to win all four major championships more than once.

Woods is currently out of action with an inflamed joint in his neck. There is no official timetable for his return, but according to his website, Woods is still scheduled to play the U.S. Open, June 17-20, and the AT&T National, July 1-4, prior to the British Open.

Oakland’s Braden tosses perfect game against Rays

May 10, 2010

FREE PICKS : CALL ME FOR THE FREE PICK ON THIS GAME 212-542-4477

Oakland, CA  – Dallas Braden tossed the second perfect game in the history of the Oakland Athletics, as they took down the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-0, in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Braden (4-2) put on a spectacular pitching performance Sunday afternoon, striking out six batters as the 26-year-old became the first A’s pitcher to record a perfect game since Jim “Catfish” Hunter accomplished the remarkable feat on May 8, 1968 against Minnesota. It was the 19th perfect game in major league history.

Braden’s perfect game was the 14th no-hitter in the history of the franchise and first since Dave Stewart’s feat on June 29, 1990 at Toronto.

“It’s without a doubt a team effort,” Braden said. “You got eight guys out there chasing balls and knocking balls down for me. So this is ours, not just mine, this is ours.”

Braden needed just 109 pitches to complete his memorable day. What made his performance so sensational, was the fact that the Rays came into the game with a road record of 13-2 and MLB-best 22-8 overall record.

Gabe Kapler ran the count to 3-1 in the ninth inning before grounding a ball to shortstop Cliff Pennington, who threw across the diamond for the final out of the Mother’s Day perfect game. After the contest, Braden gave his grandmother a celebratory hug. Braden’s mother died of melanoma when she was 39 and Braden was a senior in high school.

“It’s awesome. It doesn’t happen too often. It’s pretty fun to be a part of,” A’s third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff said.

The lefty became the first pitcher to throw a perfect game since Mark Buehrle tossed one for the Chicago White Sox on July 23, 2009. Ironically, Buehrle’s performance was against the Rays.

“That’s the third perfect game that I’ve been on the wrong side of and the fourth no-hitter,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

A 24th-round pick of Oakland in the 2004 draft, Braden graduated from Stagg High School in Stockton in 2001. He became the second pitcher this season to throw a no-hitter in the majors. Ubaldo Jimenez no-hit the Atlanta Braves on April 17.

There was a total of two no-hitters in 2009, as Giants pitcher Jonathan Sanchez gave up no hits against the Padres on July 10, 2009.

“It’s pretty special. I don’t really know what to think of it yet,” Braden said. “It’s kind of still very fresh to me.”

Braden received all the support he would need in the second inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, Landon Powell hit an RBI single to left.

The A’s added another run in the third on Kouzmanoff’s base hit that scored Daric Barton. Oakland added two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Barton and Ryan Sweeney.

The crowd came to its feet as Braden took the mound for the ninth inning. He got Willy Aybar and Dioner Navarro to line out before getting the final out.

Braden, who threw 77 pitches for strikes, had never pitched a complete game in his career coming into Sunday. In fact, his longest outing prior to Sunday was just 7 1/3 frames against Toronto on April 19, 2009.

James Shields (4-1) lasted six innings for the Rays, allowing four runs — three earned — on 11 hits to suffer his first loss of the year. He also fanned six batters and walked one for Tampa Bay, which lost back-to-back games on the road for the first time this season.

The performance from Braden also culminated a week that included his war of words with Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. During an April 22 game, Rodriguez ran through the mound area to return to first base on a foul ball. Braden, who was pitching that day, was incensed at the move. During a television interview this week, Rodriguez said of Braden that he didn’t want “to extend his extra 15 minutes of fame.”

“I’ve learned in my career it’s always much better to be recognized for some of the great things you do on the field,” Rodriguez said prior to the Yankees taking the field Sunday night against Boston. “Good for him. He threw a perfect game, and even better, he beat the Rays.”

Game Notes

Oakland has won two in a row and four of five…Tampa Bay is 6-2 versus the AL West this year, including a 3-2 mark against Oakland. The A’s, though, won six of 10 meetings with the Rays last season.

Woods withdraws from Players

May 9, 2010

FREE PICKS : CALL ME FOR THE FREE PICK ON THIS GAME 212-542-4477

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL – Tiger Woods withdrew from the Players Championship on Sunday after playing six holes. He cited a neck injury as his reason.

Woods was two-over par for his round with bogeys on the third and fifth holes. Those bogeys dropped him to two-under for the tournament, 12 strokes behind Lee Westwood at that point.

“I’ve been playing with a bad neck for quite a while,” admitted Woods, who said he first felt the pain before The Masters. “They want me to go get a picture (MRI) on it next week. I might have a bulging disk. I’ve been playing through it. I can’t play through it anymore.”

With this withdrawal, Woods is in danger of losing his No. 1 world ranking. Phil Mickelson could pass Woods for the top spot in the rankings with a win at the TPC Sawgrass.

Mickelson enters the final round five strokes behind Westwood. A win would give Mickelson enough world ranking points to pass Woods. It would mark the first time in his career that Mickelson would reach the No. 1 spot.

If he were to come from behind and win, Mickelson would match the largest comeback in Players Championship history. Justin Leonard erased a five-shot deficit in 1998 and Henrik Stenson matched that feat last year.
