World Cup Recap – Germany vs. England

June 27, 2010

FREE PICKS : CALL ME FOR THE FREE PICK ON THIS GAME 212-542-4477

(Sunday, June 27th)

Final Score: Germany 4, England 1

Bloemfontein, South Africa – A pair of second-half goals from Thomas Muller helped Germany advance to the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup on Sunday at Free State Stadium with a 4-1 win over England.

Miroslav Klose got the Germans off the mark with a goal in the 20th minute before Lukas Podolski added a second 12 minutes later. England then responded through Matthew Upson before the most controversial moment of the match arrived seconds later.

Frank Lampard chipped a shot over the head of German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer that struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the goal line. However, the goal was ruled out and Muller went on to score twice in the second half to seal the win.

“It was a fantastic performance against a very experienced England team,” said Germany coach Joachim Loew. “We definitely played with lot of confidence, and the first goals were good for our morale.

“I said to my team at the halftime break, we need to try and score the third goal. We knew we could hit England on the counter-attack because they were open. Our players carried it off brilliantly.”

The Germans will now face the winner of the Argentina and Mexico match to be played later on Sunday.

The opening 15 minutes were cautious as Germany’s Mesut Ozil provided the lone chance of the game with a tame shot from a tough angle.

But the match sprung to life in the 20th minute when a long goal kick from Neuer was allowed to skip through the middle of the England defense for Klose to stab past goalkeeper David James.

Klose was then denied by the legs of James before Germany found another goal minutes later.

A great build up saw Klose play a ball over the top to Muller, who then slid it across the box to Podolski at the back post. He was at a tight angle but was able to beat James with a low shot that slipped inside the far post.

Lampard had England’s first real chance when he was denied at close range by Neuer following a James Milner cross, but England scored one minute later from a short corner kick as Steven Gerrard’s service was nodded home by Upson in front of goal.

The equalizer almost came 30 seconds later when Lampard had his goal ruled out, and instead of going into halftime on level terms, England was one goal down.

The Chelsea star was inches away again after halftime when his 30-yard free kick crashed off the crossbar, but Germany soon grabbed control of the game.

With England pressing players forward in the last 25 minutes it was caught twice on the break, with Bastian Schweinsteiger setting up Germany’s third goal as he got to the top of the penalty area and played the ball wide to Muller, who beat James at his near post on a shot the goalie should have kept out.

Gareth Barry then allowed Ozil to dash past him at midfield and get all the way into the box on the left before squaring the ball to a wide open Muller for a simple tap in.

Gerrard tried to pull a goal back for England in the last 10 minutes, but Neuer did well to tip the shot past the post.

“Germany are a fantastic team and they deserved their win. We’ll go away and have a think about what went wrong and why we didn’t progress further in the tournament,” Gerrard said. “As a team we’ve made a big mistake today and we’ve been beaten by a good team.

“They were more clinical in front of goal and they made less mistakes than us and we got punished for that.”

Final Score: Arizona 1, Tampa Bay 0

St. Petersburg, FL – Edwin Jackson recorded his first career no-hitter as Arizona topped Tampa Bay, 1-0, in the opener of a three-game interleague set from Tropicana Field.

It wasn’t a classic performance by Jackson, who held his former team hitless despite walking eight and hitting a batter. He threw 149 pitches and struck out six for the second no-hit game in Diamondbacks franchise history.

Only Randy Johnson — who hurled a perfect game — had accomplished the feat previously for Arizona, on May 18, 2004 at Atlanta.

“No. This isn’t the first time that I’ve pitched against Tampa since I’ve been traded,” Jackson said when asked if facing the Rays entered his mind at all. “It’s one of those things where you can’t get emotions get in the way. You have to stay within your abilities and stay within the game.”

The effort was preserved when Carlos Pena’s grounder to second with one out in the eighth was booted by Stephen Drew and ruled an error, before Matt Joyce popped out. Then, with B.J. Upton at the plate, pinch-runner Carl Crawford was thrown out trying to steal second.

In the ninth, Jackson started by striking out Upton looking. Hank Blalock was retired on a soft fly to left, but pinch-hitter Willy Aybar walked on four pitches.

Jason Bartlett was retired on a grounder to Drew for the final out.

“It’s just one of those things where you have to be mentally tough. If you’re going to lose, you’re going to lose fighting,” Jackson admitted of his rarely quiet innings during the memorable outing. “There was a chance that I could give up a hit, a home run or even a game-winning home run. You have to go out there and be a competitor. You have to go out thinking you’re gonna win.”

Jackson (5-6) turned in his second nine-inning start of the season, following a no-decision during a 1-0 loss in 14 frames at Los Angeles on June 2.

Adam LaRoche’s second-inning homer was the lone run for Arizona, which snapped a two-game slide.

Jeff Niemann (6-2) was the hard-luck loser despite scattering six hits and a run with eight strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings.

Tampa Bay, which has dropped seven of its last nine games, was no-hit for the third time in less than a calendar year. Mark Buehrle of the White Sox turned in a 5-0 perfect-game victory on July 23, 2009 in Chicago, and Dallas Braden also hurled a perfect game in a 4-0 Athletics triumph in Oakland on May 9.

The Diamondbacks got all the offense they needed when LaRoche launched a one- out solo shot to right for a 1-0 game. From there, it was up to Jackson’s will to survive his own problems.

He was able to work out of trouble in the first with runners on the corners and two outs, then stranded two more in the second.

Tampa loaded the bases in the third with nobody out after Ben Zobrist walked and stole second, Evan Longoria walked and Pena also drew a base on balls. The home team came up empty after Joyce flied out, Upton grounded into a fielder’s choice at home and Blalock bounced out to second.

“To come back from that and be able to finish as strong as he did…he finished on a lot of adrenaline,” said D-Backs manager A.J. Hinch of that crucial early frame.

Following quiet fourth and fifth frames, Jackson plunked Upton in the sixth but again skirted disaster by stranding him on second after Blalock grounded out and Sean Rodriguez struck out.

Bartlett, John Jaso and Zobrist went down in order in the seventh, and Longoria’s fly to right started the eighth.

Game Notes

This was the fourth no-hit game in the majors this season…Ubaldo Jimenez of Colorado blanked Atlanta on April 17 and Roy Halladay from the Phillies turned in a perfect game against the Marlins on May 29…Jackson, who pitched for Tampa Bay from 2006-08, threw 79 strikes to offset the fact that his eight walks were a career high…Niemann threw 106 pitches, 64 for strikes…LaRoche’s homer was his 11th of the season…Arizona has won three of the last four meetings, dating back to June, 2007…Tampa Bay also wound up on the receiving end of a no-hit game on April 27, 2002 at Boston, when Derek Lowe won by a 10-0 count.

Wizards choose Wall with No. 1 pick

June 25, 2010

FREE PICKS : CALL ME FOR THE FREE PICK ON THIS GAME 212-542-4477

The Washington Wizards selected Kentucky point guard John Wall with the first overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-4 Wall, the first Kentucky player selected No. 1 overall, completed his first collegiate campaign with 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists per contest for the Wildcats, who fell to West Virginia in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

“I feel like I had pressure since I became No. 1 in high school and was one of the top players,” Wall said. “I always got there hungry wanting to fight hard and compete in every game, so when I step on the court I’m going to take on any challenge there.”

The athletic floor general joins a Washington team that was plagued by bad play on the court and off-court issues last season, headlined by the suspension of Gilbert Arenas for bringing guns into the Verizon Center locker room.

“I feel like he needs the ball in his hands a lot but he did a great job at the point and we both did a great job this year and both have a chance to reach our dreams,” Wall said of Arenas.

The Wizards last had the No.1 overall selection in 2001 when they selected Kwame Brown, who never panned out in the nation’s capital.

Incredibly, Kentucky had five players taken in the first round, a record for the draft. DeMarcus Cousins went to Sacramento at No. 5, Patrick Patterson to Houston at No. 14 and Eric Bledsoe was originally taken by the Thunder with the 18th pick. Forward Daniel Orton was selected by Orlando at No. 29.

The Philadelphia 76ers, now under the guidance of new head coach Doug Collins, took Ohio State guard Evan Turner at No. 2.

“I’ve been looking forward to playing with him all my life,” Turner said of Collins. “He’s been a player that’s on top of the game at different stages of the game and coached some of the greatest players of all time and I can’t wait to learn from him.”

The 2010 Naismith and Wooden Award winner, Turner led the Big Ten in scoring (20.4 points) and rebounds (9.2) this past season while also averaging 5.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He missed a month’s worth of action after suffering a back injury on a hard fall to the floor in early December. Turner appeared in 101 games during his three years at Ohio State.

The 76ers were in need of a tall shooting guard and got their man in the 6- foot-7 Turner.

The New Jersey Nets, coming off a franchise-record 70-loss season, took Georgia Tech forward Derrick Favors with the third pick. The 6-foot-10 Atlanta native was named the ACC Rookie of the Year after ranking second on the team with averages of 12.4 points and 8.4 rebounds.

The Nets turned the page recently by naming former point guard Avery Johnson their new head coach, a move favored by Favors.

“One of the strongest parts of my game is playing defense, so I think he can help me become a better defender with the way that he coaches and he can really push me and make me the player that they think I’m going to be,” Favors said.

Minnesota, which entered the night with the most draft picks this year with five, took Syracuse forward Wesley Johnson at No. 4. Johnson, as a junior, was named Big East Player of the Year and a consensus All-American after averaging a team-high 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in 35 games for the Orange this past season. The 6-foot-7, 205-pound versatile forward spent the first two years of his collegiate career at Iowa State before transferring to Syracuse following the 2007-08 campaign.

Johnson joins ex-Syracuse teammate Jonny Flynn on the Timberwolves. Flynn was the sixth overall selection last year.

“Definitely looking forward to playing with him, the chemistry you have starting out to play with each other, he’s eager,” Johnson said. “Fortunate enough to be able to get drafted and play with him. I’m excited.”

Cousins became the second Kentucky freshman to be taken in the draft when he was picked by Sacramento. The 6-foot-11 center recorded 15.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game with the Wildcats.

Five straight forwards were selected from picks six through 10. Baylor’s Ekpe Udoh was taken at No. 6 by Golden State, followed by Georgetown’s Greg Monroe being selected by Detroit. Wake Forest’s Al-Farouq Aminu was the pick of the Clippers at No. 8, Utah nabbed Butler’s Gordon Hayward, and Indiana grabbed Paul George out of Fresno State to complete the top 10.

Udoh, a 6-foot-10, 240-pounder, set Baylor and Big 12 Conference single-season records for blocked shots with 133 this past season while averaging 13.9 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 36 games. He averaged 3.7 blocks per game.

Monroe completed his sophomore season at Georgetown by averaging 16.1 points and a team-best 9.6 rebounds, while Aminu became the first Wake Forest player to lead the conference in rebounding since Tim Duncan in 1997. Aminu averaged 15.8 points and 10.7 rebounds this past season.

Hayward, who also just finished his sophomore year, was at the forefront of Butler’s run to the title game against Duke. He averaged 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest.

George is coming off a sophomore season in which he was named to the second team All-Western Athletic Conference. Known for his great foul shooting, George also topped the Bulldogs with 16.8 ppg, 7.2 rpg and 64 steals.

Kansas players were taken at No. 11 and 12 with center Cole Aldrich originally going to New Orleans and guard Xavier Henry headed to Memphis. Aldrich, though was reportedly headed to Oklahoma City in a deal that included Morris Peterson going to the Thunder.

North Carolina forward Ed Davis was selected at No. 13 by Toronto, and Houston followed by taking Patterson. Virginia Commonwealth center Larry Sanders went next to Milwaukee and Nevada forward Luke Babbitt was taken by Minnesota at No. 16, but was sent to Portland as part of a three-player deal with Ryan Gomes joining the Blazers and Martell Webster going to the Timberwolves.

Power forward Kevin Seraphin from French Guiana was the 17th pick, but he’s not expected to remain with the Bulls. Reports indicate Seraphin is on his way to the Wizards as part of a trade that will send veteran guard Kirk Hinrich to Washington. The Bulls will reportedly receive a future second-round draft pick.

Bledsoe was also reportedly not going to stay with the club that drafted him as a proposed trade had him going to the Clippers for a future first-round pick.

Texas guard Avery Bradley was taken by the Boston Celtics at No. 19, and that was followed by the Spurs grabbing guard James Anderson out of Oklahoma State.

Portland took Memphis guard Elliot Williams 22nd.

This was also the latest a college senior was selected in the first round, as Clemson power forward Trevor Booker was taken at No. 23 by Minnesota. Booker, though was expected to be part of a four-player deal, and will reportedly end up with the Wizards.

Atlanta drafted Texas forward Damion James with the 24th pick, but he was traded to New Jersey. In the deal the Hawks will get Jordan Crawford, of Xavier. Crawford was picked 27th.

Memphis took South Florida guard Dominique Jones at No. 25, then turned around and dealt him to Dallas for cash considerations. Quincy Pondexter, a forward from the University of Washington, was taken 26th, but was reportedly part of the Peterson deal and will end up in New Orleans.

Maryland point guard Greivis Vasquez was selected 28th by the Grizzlies, and after Orton was taken, Marquette’s Lazar Hayward was grabbed at 30th by the Wizards to complete the first round. Hayward wasn’t expected to remain with Washington as he’s reportedly part of a four-player deal and will go to Minnesota.

World Cup Recap – Slovakia vs. Italy

(Thursday, June 24)

Final Score: Slovakia 3, Italy 2

Johannesburg, South Africa – Robert Vittek scored goals on each side of the half as Slovakia held on late to down the defending FIFA World Cup champions Italy, 3-2, at Ellis Park Stadium in Group F action on Thursday.

With the win, Slovakia not only advances to the round of 16, but eliminates the Italians, who didn’t pick up a single win in the group stage after winning the Cup in 2006 in Germany.

The Azzurri, who finish in last in Group F, are the fourth defending champion to be knocked out in the group stage, joining France in 2002, Brazil in 1966 and Italy in 1950.

Paraguay was held to a 0-0 draw with New Zealand in the other Group F match on Thursday but still won the group, while Slovakia earned the runner-up spot.

Although Slovakia had the better of the play in the first half, Italy got things started in the first minute when a long shot by Antonio Di Natale went just over the bar.

The Slovakians had a chance to go up in the first 15 minutes, but Marik Hamsik missed a wide-open volley from 15-yards out after the ball was flicked into the Italy penalty area.

Ten minutes later the Slovakians were able to go up 1-0, however, when Vittek finished a quick pass from Juraj Kucka after he stole the ball off Daniele De Rossi. Vittek received the ball at the top the 18-yard box, and quickly turned and slotted a perfectly-placed shot into the left corner.

The goal was the third Italy has given up on just three shots on goal to that point of the tournament.

Italian goalkeeper Federico Marchetti made his first save since taking over for the injured Gianluigi Buffon at halftime of his team’s Group F opener when Zdenko Strba tested him with a long-range shot that was knocked out-of-bounds in the 35th minute.

That ended up being the only save an Italian goalkeeper would make the entire tournament.

Italy started to push for the equalizer after the hour mark, a few minutes after a less than fully fit AC Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo entered the game to try and add some offense to his stagnant club.

There were no real significant chances for the Azzurri until the 67th minute when Fabio Quagliarella volleyed a chance on goal after a service was deflected by Slovakian goalkeeper Jan Mucha. But defender Martin Skrtel got in front of the ball to clear it inches before it crossed the goal line.

Vittek made it 2-0 for the Slovakians after a corner kick was cleared by the defense back to the corner to Marik Hamsik. Hamsik then played a low cross to the top of the six to Vittek, who beat Marchetti to the near post in the 73rd minute.

Di Natale pulled the Italians back within one in the 81st minute to set up a furious finish when he knocked in a rebound after Mucha made a save on Quagliarella from in tight.

Kamil Kopunek restored Slovakia’s two-goal advantage when he caught Italy sleeping eight minutes later by chipping a shot over Marchetti from in close after a throw-in from the right side before Quagliarella beat Mucha with a perfectly-placed shot into the top-left corner from distance to make it 3-2 in the 93rd minute.

Final Score: United States 1, Algeria 0

Pretoria, South Africa – The United States completed its FIFA World Cup group stage with a 1-0 win over Algeria on Wednesday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium thanks to a 91st-minute winner from Landon Donovan.

With the U.S. pressing, needing the win to advance to the second round, a counter-attacking goal by Donovan in second-half stoppage time put the Americans through.

U.S. striker Jozy Altidore crossed to Clint Dempsey on the odd-man rush. After the Fulham attacker’s shot from in tight was stuffed by goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi, the ball was left lying in the six-yard box for Donovan to sweep in for the game-winner.

Donovan’s 44th career international goal clinched Group C’s top seed for the Americans, who play the Group D runner-up in the knockout round on Saturday.

Thanks to its 1-0 win over Slovenia, which was played at the same time as the U.S. game, England earned Group C’s runner-up slot and plays the Group D winner on Sunday. Slovenia and Algeria were eliminated.

The U.S., which fell behind early in its first two group matches to England and Slovenia, almost continued the trend vs. Algeria when Rafik Djebbour drilled a shot off the crossbar just six minutes in. Djebbour earned the chance after U.S. central defender Jay DeMerit misjudged a long ball, letting it get over his head to the Algeria striker, whose shot went just high.

Donovan had his team’s first chance when he ripped a shot well over the bar in the 18th minute as the Americans started to find their legs.

The U.S. had a flurry of chances in the 20th minute after midfielder Michael Bradley drove into the Algeria penalty area and was stuffed by the defense. But the ball popped out to striker Herculez Gomez, whose shot was parried right back to him by M’Bolhi. Gomez then fired across the six to Dempsey, who knocked the ball home, but the goal was waived off for offsides.

The U.S., which carried the majority of the possession in the opening half, had another opportunity in the 37th when Bradley flicked a nice ball to Donovan breaking into the Algeria area. After M’Bolhi made the initial save, Altidore knocked the rebound over the bar with a wide open net staring him in the face.

Algeria forward Karim Ziani had a chance just before the break, but his shot from about 25 yards went high and wide.

Dempsey had another glorious chance for the U.S. in the 57th minute after an Altidore cross was left at the top of the 18 by the defense, but his shot went off the right post before he knocked the rebound high.

Just after the hour mark, U.S. defender Carlos Bocanegra slid to knock away an Algeria cross from the left side headed to Djebbour, who would have had only U.S. ‘keeper Howard to beat and the game remained scoreless.

About 20 minutes from time, U.S. substitute Edson Buddle had a header from in tight go right at M’Bolhi after a Steve Cherundolo cross from the left. Ziani ripped another long shot just wide on the counter for Algeria

The U.S. had a couple free kicks in the closing minutes from just outside the area, but was unable to capitalize and get the all-important goal before Donovan’s winner in the closing seconds.
