memphisTulsa Golden Hurricane at Memphis Tigers

October 2nd 2010 7 PM EST

Line: Tulsa -9

Overview:

This is a game that isn’t going to be interesting unless you are an alumni, you go to the school, or you bet on it. I recommend you bet on it. The Golden Hurricane (that’s right, just one hurricane) takes on the Memphis Tigers in Memphis. This isn’t the Memphis team that they had together when Deangello Williams was gashing every defense he faced. Tulsa is 2-2, Memphis is 1-3, and both teams have yet to win a game in conference. In every football game, there is a winner and a loser, even if both teams are the latter.

Keys to the Game:

  • Tulsa has to continue to perform on offense. G.J. Kinne has played well, and he opens up the field for the ground game to get going. They have multiple backs that can get it done, ranking 16th in total rushing yards. Saying they rack up garbage stats in their losses isn’t necessarily true. Although they lost by a large margin against Oklahoma State, they lost by only two to East Carolina. The Tulsa offense isn’t the problem, their defense is just something to be desired.
  • Gregory Ray and Jerrell Rhodes are going to trample Tulsa. Tulsa has had no answer for any team they have faced this season. Ray and Rhodes share carries, and create a great running back tandem. There is no reason to think a team who allowed 51 to East Carolina will be able to shut down the running game that continues to impress in Memphis.
  • Tulsa doesn’t do well on the road. Last week’s momentum doesn’t carry over. I understand Tulsa may be the lesser of two evils here, but they are on the road. Memphis isn’t going to lay down. They want to give their student body a reason to come to the games. Tulsa has not won on the road yet. Memphis didn’t lose their only home game. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, it’s still early, but it could come into play.

Wrap Up:

The fact of the matter is both of these teams are going to show up on offense. If the over/under isn’t turned off come game day, take the over (unless it is 90+). Of all my sports picks this week, this one offers the most intangibles. I still see Memphis coming within one score at home.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at Hawaii Warriors

October 2nd 2010 11:30 PM EST

Line: Hawaii -8 1/2

Overview:

Aloha Louisiana Tech. Even if the Bulldogs don’t come out with a victory, what better place to lose than at Hawaii? Louisiana Tech will be a long way from home, but how big of a factor will the travel actually play in this WAC match up.

Keys to the Game:

  • Hawaii has the best passing offense in the country. This shouldn’t come as too big as a surprise. When Colt Brennan led them to their first bowl game, he set numerous passing records. They play against weak competition generally and they love to throw the ball. Louisiana Tech falls into the weak competition category, so look for Hawaii to victimize them as Bryant Moniz slings the rock around.
  • Newly appointed starting Bulldog quarterback Tarik Hakmi needs to take command of the offense. He shows promise, but is not yet fully comfortable. He needs to establish himself as the golden arm and undisputed leader of his football team. Throwing a couple of picks last week didn’t help his cause, but bouncing back against Hawaii will help him earn the trust of his team.
  • Hawaii is a proud football team. Many of the players have Polynesian roots, which they embrace with their rendition of the Haka before games. They have proven to be inconsistent, but they have not had the easiest schedule. The Warriors will not be embarrassed by a Louisiana Tech team. Even against the more talented USC team, they let their opponent feel their presence. Many teams walk away with personal fouls when they play in Hawaii. Expect to see some jibber jabber.

Wrap Up:

The spread is 8 1/2. In this weeks edition of my sports picks, it has been challenging to go with any of the underdogs. I don’t think Louisiana Tech is near the level of Hawaii. The Hawaii Air show will continue on Saturday.

Nevada Wolf Pack at UNLV Rebels

Satruday October 2nd 2010 10 PM EST

Line: Nevada -21

Overview:

The Wolf Pack have to be the breakout team of this year. Nobody has figured out how to contain them this season, which has earned them a 4-0 start. The UNLV Rebels beat New Mexico, but the fact that they were held to under 50 against that team has to be disappointing. UNLV is not up to speed with the Wolf Pack, but a victory over newly ranked UNR would be great for their in state rivalry.

Keys to the Game:

  • Nobody has been able to figure out how to stop the Pistol offense UNR runs. Coaches from all levels were at the facility, trying to get a little genius rubbed off on them as they took in the intricacies of the offense. Chris Ault has something going with his confusing offense. The running back is directly behind the quarterback. Like the Wildcat offense in the NFL and the Wing T in high school, the cool new gimmick in college football is the pistol. Eventually, someone will find a way to stop it, but I don’t see it happening this week. Regardless, it’s worth turning on your TV for.
  • Senior Quarterback Omar Clayton goes AWOL against ranked opponents. He went 14-20 for 3 touchdowns last week against New Mexico. A more comparable opponent would be Utah, where he completed 47 percent of his passes and threw for just over 200 yards. UNLV struggles on the ground, so they rely heavily on their quarterback play. His experience limits his picks, but he won’t impress on Saturday.
  • The Wolf Pack has an underrated defense. They like to torment passers, coming off the edge with athletic rushers like James Michael-Johnson. The Rebels are outmatched on both sides of the ball, but I’m not sure they know just how solid the Wolf Pack is on defense. The offense gets all of the attention, but the defense is not full of slouches.

Wrap Up:

Nevada doesn’t fiddle around with their prey. A lot of people took Cal with their sports picks last week, but Nevada proved their worth. They are relentless and will look to stomp out the Rebels from start to finish. The spread is 21. The Wolf Pack have already put up 49 or more three times this season. I think they will do it again. The Rebel offense is not effective enough to put up any more than 21, so this spread is too small.

Arizona State Sun Devils at Oregon State Beavers

October 2nd 2010 6:30 PM EST

Line: Oregon State -3 1/2

This Pac 10 show down features two teams that have had disappointing seasons to this point. For Oregon State, starting off 1-2 is not something they anticipated. As for Arizona State, they have struggled in recent years, but they have played exceptionally well this year. Unfortunately, they threw away two games this season against ranked opponents. Their Wisconsin loss was due to a missed field goal, a missed extra point, and an unlucky kickoff return that fell just short before the second half. They held off the Oregon Ducks, but turned the ball over seven times, shooting themselves in the foot numerous times.

Keys to the Game:

  • Arizona State has to close the game out. It almost seems as though they are afraid to succeed. Oregon State is a good football team, but so were Wisconsin and Oregon. If ASU feels like they are close to a victory it seems as though they do not know how to behave. Coach Dennis Erickson needs to stress the importance of shutting the door. Allowing teams to win because of little errors and a nonchalant attitude with the football is not going to make for a successful season.
  • Jacquizz and James Rodgers do absolutely everything for the Beavers. Jacquizz leads the team in rushing, while James leads the team in receiving. It will be important for the ferocious Vontaze Burfict to unleash pain on Jacquizz Rodgers early and often. James Rodgers will be targeted all game long, but the ASU corners have faired considerably well so far this season. If the Rodgers brothers are contained, the Beavers will be frustrated.
  • Ryan Katz  is overrated. He has a 118.5 passer rating, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions. That doesn’t seem like a terrible stat sheet, but if you dig a little deeper, you will see that he has a 46.8% completion rating. Of the passes he does complete, his yards per attempt are 5.99. That means every completed pass is pretty much a quick slant, a dumpoff to Jacquizz Rodgers, or a screen pass of some sort. Katz is looked upon by many as a talented quarterback, but I respectfully disagree.
  • The Beavers need to have an answer for the Sun Devil returners. The Sun Devils have a number of talented return men. Omar Bolden, broke a kickoff return for a touchdown against Wisconsin. There have been many other big gainers throughout the season, giving the Sun Devil opponents a short field to defend. The Sun Devils don’t just have one return man you can kick away from, so it will be critical that the Beavers all stay in their lanes and remain attentive on all special teams plays. The ASU special teams unit is one of the bright points on their roster.

Wrap up:

ASU has been robbed a couple of times now this season. I think it is time they put it all together. I understand that the Beavers are at home, which is probably the reason for the 3 1/2 point spread rather than just the even 3. Oregon State is talented, and they have only lost to juggernauts this season, but I don’t think they win by more than a field goal. This one is going to come down to the wire.

oregonStanford Cardinals at Oregon Ducks (-7)

Saturday October 2, 2010 8:00 PM EST

This game could be the best of the weekend. Both Pac-10 teams come into this game with a 4-0 record and both are in the top 15 in points scored and points against. Oregon’s closest game was last week where they only beat Arizona State by 11. Stanford’s closest game was also last week at Notre Dame where they only won by 23 points

These two teams have been dominant on both sides of the football. Both teams also have Heisman contenders on their teams. For Stanford, Junior QB Andrew Luck has thrown for 912 yards with 11 TDs and 2 Ints. He has also added 100+ rushing yards with another TD. For the Ducks, Sophomore RB LaMichael James has 455 yards on the ground with 4 TDs. He is averaging 7.8 yards per carry. The X-factor in this game is Sophomore QB Darron Thomas for the Ducks. Thomas has looked very good this season thrwoing for 822 yards with 10 TDs and 3 Ints. The Ducks bring into this game the top ranked scoring offense in the nation.

This game will be close and more than likely come down to the wire. As a football pick, both teams come in hot. One team is not hotter than the other but it will come down to whose defense can make more stops. I think a TD is a tough line to cover for two 4-0 Pac-10 teams regardless the venue. Stanford will give the Ducks all they can handle.

Florida Gators at Alabama Crimson Tide (-9.5)

Saturday October 2, 2010 8:00 PM EST

This matchup should be the best of the week. Its 2 of the best SEC teams both with flawless records of 4-0. Alabama is coming off a hard fought victory against ranked Arkansas on the road 24-20. Florida demolished Kentucky at home 48-14. Alabama holds the top ranking in the nation while Florida is ranked #7.

Both teams come into this game with top 15 ranked defenses. Alabama is ranked #1 while Florida is ranked #15. You know what your going to get on that side of the ball. The biggest difference between these two teams is what is on the other side of the ball. Alabama’s rushing attack is scary. A health Mark Ingram to go along with Trent Richardson should have every defense worried about getting ran over. Both RBs are over 300 yards on the season with each having 4 TDS. The better QB also resides with Alabama. Senior QB Greg McElroy has 899 yards with 7 TDs and 3 Ints. McElroy’s favorite target, Julio Jones, has 303 yards with 2 TDs and is the best NFL ready WR in college football.

Alabama is scary on both sides of the ball. I don’t think, as a football pick, that Florida will have enough offense nor defense to stop the Crimson Tide. If this game were in Florida with the same line, I MIGHT go with the Gators. This one is in Alabama and they are going to be fired up after a big win last week and ready to show that they are capable of a repeat this year.

Washington Huskies at USC  Trojans (-10.5)

Saturday October 2, 2010 8:00 PM EST

Lane Kiffin has these USC Trojans, ranked #18, playing at a high level as of right now. They bring into this Pac-10 game a 4-0 record. Washington looked horrible 2 weeks ago losing to 8th ranked Nebraska 56-21. They bring in a 1-2 record and look to get back to .500.

All eyes will be on the QBs this week. For Washington, Jake Locker was said to be a Heisman hopeful. After a sub-par performance last week, he looks to gain back his form in this one. Thus far Locker has thrown for 626 yards with 6 TDs and 2 Ints. USC QB Matt Barkley has looked more so like the Heisman hopeful after a strong start to the year. The Sophomore has 941 yards with 12 TDs and 4 Ints. These two will be under a microscope in this one.

USC outranks Washington in passing yards, rushing yards, points for, and points against. With football picks, all four of those categories are huge. USC performs very well at home and should have no trouble easily beating this Washington team.

Georgia Bulldogs (-5) at Colorado Buffaloes

Saturday October 2, 2010 7:00 PM EST

This is not the Georgia Bulldog team we are all use to seeing. They are 1-3 on the year and have lost three straight games. Colorado has looked good at home posting a 2-0 record.

Everyone is use to seeing the Bulldogs put out a great defense. This year has been somewhat different with the defense barely inside the top 50 allowing almost 20 points a game. This team is also struggling to score points averaging only 24 a game. Colorado isn’t going to blow anyone out and only has averaged a little more than 20 points a game. This Colorado defense is only allowing 22 points a game so this looks like a good matchup. The player to follow in this one is Freshman QB Aaron Murray. Murray has thrown for 879 yards with 5 TDs and 2 Ints.

Georgia typically doesn’t go on long losing streaks. The fact they have lost 3 straight raises some alarms. Colorado has had 2 weeks to prepare for this game and should be more than ready to put on a great show for their fans. Like I have said before about football picks, I like the hot team. Colorado won their last game but that doesn’t count as hot. On the other hand, Georgia has lost 3 straight and that counts as cold.

Texas Tech Red Raiders (-7) at Iowa State Cyclones

Saturday October 2, 2010 7:00 PM EST

Texas Tech comes into this battle of Big 12 teams looking for its first conference victory. The Red Raiders are 2-1 while the Cyclones are 2-2. Iowa State is coming off a victory vs Northern Iowa while Texas Tech had an extra week to prepare for this one.

The one thing that has stood out for this Iowa State team is their defense. They are only allowing 18 points a game, 33rd best in the nation. The defense is gonna have to come thru because the offense is only averaging little over 20 points a game, 99th in the nation. Texas Tech had 2 weeks to get over the tough loss to Texas. They will look at Senior QB Taylor Potts to carry this offense. Potts has 810 yards this year with 8 TDs and 2 Ints. The Red Raiders are averaging over 33 points a game but are getting little help from the running game which is ranked 116th in the nation.

Look for the Red Raiders to get back on track after the loss to Texas. Normally with football picks, I like teams to have running games. With the Iowa State defense looking solid I expect the running game for Texas Tech to do just enough. Taylor Potts is a good QB and should be able to carve the Iowa State defense up.

Saturday October 2, 2010 7:00 PM EST

This battle of ACC teams finds both with 2-2 records looking to get over .500. Wake Forest is the only team that has played a ranked opponent. They played at Stanford and got blown out 68-24.

These two teams are very similar in that they both rank outside the top 100 in passing yards a game but rank inside the top 15 in rushing yards a game. This game will be determined by who can get more out of their passing attack. Georgia Tech is ranked 3rd in the nation in rushing yards a game with a stunning 320 yards a game. Leading the rushing attack is Senior QB Joshua Nesbitt. Nesbitt has 316 yards on the ground with 3 TDs. He hasn’t been great thru the air but has thrown for 316 yards with 3 TDs and 1 Int. Wake Forest has gotten good rushing production from their QB as well. Freshman QB Tanner Price has ran for 152 yards with 2 TDs while throwing for 305 yards 3 TDs and 3 Ints.

This game will come down to defense, and the Wake Forest defense has given up 40 points a game this year. For a football pick, this looks to be a game of who is going to be able to run the ball better and just get enough from their QB. I’m going to take the Senior QB from Georgia Tech vs the Freshman QB from Wake.

Washington State Cougars at UCLA Bruins (-27)

Saturday October 2, 2010 3:30 PM EST

UCLA after an 0-2 start has bounced back with 2 straight wins over ranked opponents. On the other hand, Washington State is 1-3. The Cougars last week got smoked by the 20th ranked USC Trojans.

UCLA shocked just about everyone with a victory at Texas. A big part of that has been their 20th ranked rushing offense lead by Sophomore RB Jonathan Franklin who has 409 yards with 4 TDs. The big question for the Bruins is whether or not QB Kevin Prince will play in this game. Prince has said the knee feels great but there is room for worry. The defense for the Bruins has really stood out only allowing 25 total points in the last two weeks vs ranked opponents. Nothing has went right for the Cougars and they are ranked outside the top 100 in points for (19.3) and points against (43) a game. The one bright spot has been Sophomore QB Jeff Tuel who has thrown for 922 yards with 6 TDs and 4 Ints.

With football picks, you always have to go with the hot team. Right now I wouldn’t doubt that UCLA is the hottest team in the country. They have been amazing and they should have a great reception back at home vs a Pac-10 opponent. Even without Prince, this game is going to be a blowout. The only question is by how many points. With the direction of both teams being opposite, I’d give up 27 points for the Bruins.

Saturday October 2, 2010 3:30 PM EST

LSU comes into this SEC game with a 4-0 record while Tennessee comes in at 2-2. LSU also comes in with the #12 ranking. LSU last week beat a ranked West Virginia team 20-14. Tennessee has handled its non-ranked opponents, while losing to ranked Oregon and Florida at home. This is the first road game for the Volunteers.

This is not the time nor the place for the Volunteers road opener. LSU brings into this game the 5th ranked defense, only allowing 12 points a game. QB Jordan Jefferson has struggled for LSU but this should be a favorable matchup at home vs a Tennessee defense that ranks 81st in the nation in points against with 27. Look for Jefferson to hand the ball off to Junior RB Stevan Ridley early and often. Ridley has 434 yard rushing this year with 3 TDs to lead the 35th ranked rushing attack.

Look for the LSU crowd to be loud. Also look for the Tennessee offense to be very out of sync vs this 5th ranked defense of the Tigers. WIth football picks, you hardly ever want to take the road team. In this instance you don’t want to take a team making its first road trip to a top 15 team with a top 5 defense. This all spells disaster for Tennessee. Look for Jordan Jefferson to do just enough to have these running backs run wild.

Michigan Wolverines (-10.5) at Indiana Hoosiers

Saturday October 2, 2010 3:30 PM EST

Both of these Big 10 teams come in with flawless records. Michigan is a perfect 4-0 while Indiana is 3-0. The opponents that Indiana  have played fail in comparison to the opponents that Michigan has beaten. Michigan comes in ranked #19 in the nation.

The person everyone will be watching in this game is Sophomore QB Denard Robinson. His stats on the season are crazy. He has thrown for 731 yards wit 4 TDs and only 1 Int, while adding 688 yards on the ground with another 6 TDs. He did get a little banged up last week with a knee injury. The injury didn’t seem too serious as Robinson was seen running around after half time and looked like he could go back in. There was no need because this Michigan team can survive with Sophomore QB Tate Forcier who threw for 110 yards and a TD while completing 12 out of 12 passes. Senior QB Ben Chappell has looked good for the Hoosiers thus far. He has thrown for 890 yards with 9 TDs and 0 Ints.

With Indiana beating up on some poor teams, they are in for a surprise with Michigan. Denard Robinson could be used sparingly with a combination of Tate Forcier. The Wolverines offense has looked outstanding and Indiana might be shocked as to how good this offense is. From a football pick perspective, I love the Wolverines. They have it going right now and should win this game, and it could be a bigger margin of victory based on Denard Robinson’s performance and ability following his minor injury.

Texas Longhorns at Oklahoma Sooners (-3.5)

Saturday October 2, 2010 3:30 PM EST

The Red River Rivalry is how Oklahoma will debut in its season opener for the Big 12. Both teams lost QBs into the draft last year. The Longhorns lost Colt Mccoy while the Sooners lost Sam Bradford. The Sooners come into the game with a 4-0 record while the Longhorns come in with a 3-1 record.

Texas has lived and died by their defense. This is supposed to be the year the defense holds the team together while Sophomore Garret Gilbert finds his stride. Texas is ranked #21, but struggled mightily last week at home vs UCLA. The defense has done their share, holding opponents to an average of only 18 points per game. The offense is only putting up 26 points a game and that may not be enough to beat the Sooners. Oklahoma comes into this game sporting the #8 ranking in the nation. They have had far better QB play via Sophomore QB Landry Jones. Jones has 1,221 yards with 9 TDs and 3 Ints. Jones did get valuable playing time last year when Bradford went down with a shoulder injury. The dark horse in this game will be RB DeMarco Murray. The Senior RB has 436 rushing yards with 7 TDs. He also has added 111 receiving yards with another TD.

The play of Landry Jones and explosiveness of DeMarco Murray make this an easy football pick. These games in this rivalry always seem close, but after the way Texas looked last week, I need them to show me something. Oklahoma will prove to be too much and will cover the line.

New Mexico comes into their 3rd home game with a 0-4 record. Their closest loss margin was 35 points last week at UNLV. It has not been pretty for the the Lobos and only looks to get uglier. The UTEP Miners come into the game with a 3-1 record with their one loss coming on the road.

The Miners have been average in points for (28.3) and points against (21.8) per game. Their rushing offense and passing offense both sit inside the top 45 in the nation. Now onto the Lobos. They can’t seem to do anything right. They have averaged only 10.3 points a game, 119th in the nation. On the other side of the ball, they can’t stop anyone allowing over 56 points per game.

New Mexico has looked horrible. I wouldn’t put my money within 100 miles of New Mexico. UTEP has looked decent this year and should be able to take care of a team that lacks the same amount of talent. I look at Trevoer Vittatoe to make this an easy football pick. The Senior QB has 986 yards with 8 TDs and 2 Ints.

Boise State Broncos at New Mexico State Aggies

Saturday October 3rd 2010 8 PM EST

The Line: Boise -43

When you break down a game like this, two questions are raised. How good is team a) Boise, and how bad is team b) New Mexico State. The answer in this one is very, to both questions. Boise State is, once again undefeated. Their National Championship resume is growing, having beaten two ranked teams this season. New Mexico State? Not so much. They have been pounded into the ground by three teams that are irrelevant to the national scene. Although they haven’t been beaten by 43, it is going to be tough to hold off the Broncos.

Keys to the Game

  • Kellen Moore might walk away with a Heisman this year. Some signature victories, like the one over Virginia Tech, are certainly more important than others, but the stats all go in the same collective pile at the end of the season. I would think Boise would try to use this game to inflate his stats. Their schedule remains relatively easy due to their weak conference, but destroying a team by fifty is exactly what Moore needs to make his numbers astronomical. He has a complete understanding of where everyone is on the field. With a pro football mentality, Moore could easily throw for 400 yards in this one, as long as he is left in the game throughout the entire beating.
  • New Mexico State likes to throw the ball, and they aren’t very good at it. Matt Christian has played relatively well, but his competition has been less than impressive. He doesn’t stand out to me as a great passer, although his QB rating is 112.53. His yards per attempt are just over six, which means his numbers are inflated by checking the ball down. Boise is going to eliminate that entirely. Their swarming defense does not let teams pick them apart. Airing it out a little bit is going to equate to turnovers, early and often. The way these sort of games get out of control is when Goliath gets a short field.
  • Expect the snow ball effect to make an appearance. The last thing New Mexico State wants to do is panic. That being said, that could very well be the first thing they do. If the wheels come off in the first half, the Aggies are in for a long night. Once Boise gets rolling they could put up sixty points. In my sports picks I usually try to shy away from saying a team is going to be beaten by 50, but that could easily be the case. New Mexico State has given up against each of their opponents this season. The fight is going to leave their team early. Hopefully no one gets hurt.

Wrap up:

Boise knows only one speed. Full speed. They are going to go 100 percent the entire game every snap. That isn’t good new for New Mexico state. Even if Boise puts in their backups, they will be going full throttle. There is no mercy rule in college football and 43 points is almost a slap in the face to Boise. Broncos roll by 50.

Duke Blue Devils at Maryland Terrapins (-7.5)

Saturday October 2, 2010 6:00 PM EST

Duke comes into this game at Maryland looking for something after 3 straight loses. They have lost all three of their games by a touchdown or more. Maryland looks to get its ACC season debut started off right against a relatively easy opponent. Maryland has played some good football with a 3-1 record. Their one loss on the season came at ranked West Virginia.

The amazing thing for the Terrapins is the fact that they rank 102nd in the country with 159 passing yards a game. That is obviously not getting it done but somehow they are averaging over 34 points a game, 34th best in the nation. Their defense has been solid as well only giving up 19 points a game, 40th in the country. The Blue Devils have been forced to put up points because their defense is allowing over 44 points a game, 118th in the nation. With all the points Duke is allowing, they have been forced to throw the football. Sophomore Sean Renfree has showed some talent. He has thrown for 1,113 yards with 9 TDs and 7 Ints.

Duke’s defense has not been able to stop anyone on defense. Two weeks ago Alabama came into Duke and put up a 62 spot against them. Maryland’s offense is nowhere near stellar, but they should be able to score some touchdowns vs this atrocious Duke defense. The football pick lies on the defense, and Maryland has the better of the two defenses by far.

Arizona Cardinals at San Diego Chargers

Sunday October 3rd 2010

The Line: San Diego -8 1/2

Overview:

The Cardinals won by a narrow margin last week against Oakland. They come into the game at 2-1, though their schedule has not been difficult. They played one good team and two struggling teams, so their matchup against the Chargers is intriguing. This is the first team they have played that is in the middle of the pack. The Chargers won their only home game of the season. They lost to the Seahawks and the Chiefs away, but those are difficult places to play in. Both of these teams’ futures are still up in the air.

  • The Chargers can throw the ball, even without Vincent Jackson. Philip Rivers already has over a thousand yards in the air, even without his number one target. The Cardinal secondary isn’t horrible, but it isn’t elite either. The Chargers face a much easier test passing against the Cardinals than they did last week against the Raiders. Look for Malcom Floyd to have another big game. In my sports picks last week, I suspected the Chargers would utilize Antonio Gates against an inexperienced Seahawk secondary. He ended up with 109 yards and a touchdown. He is still Rivers’ go to guy, especially in the red zone.
  • Larry Fitzgerald should be top 5 in receiving yards…right? As of right now he is 48th. I understand that Derek Anderson is not Kurt Warner, but how hard can it be to put the ball in a spot where Fitz can catch it.. Buster Davis, Danny Amendola, and even fellow teammate Steve Breaston have more receptions. To make matters worse, he is third in targets. They are trying to get him the ball and they just can’t. This is no fault of Fitzgeralds. They need to figure out a way to get their best weapon the ball if they want a chance to win football games.
  • Mike Tolbert has big shoes to fill. In an odd sequence of circumstances, Mike Tolbert has become the new stallion in the backfield for the Chargers. L.T. was seen as expendable and rookie Ryan Matthews has sustained an injury. That leaves Tolbert. He has filled in nicely in the absence of Matthews, averaging 5.2 yards a carry. The Cardinals run defense isn’t what it used to be since they got rid of Karlos Dansby. Tolbert could find himself running at will if the Chargers gear up to stop Rivers and see Tolbert as an after thought.

Wrap up:

The Chargers have not proven anything to anyone except for Vegas. They played one good game against a pathetic Jacksonville team and suddenly Vegas throws out a huge 8 1/2 point spread. I understand they are at home. I understand the Cardinals haven’t beaten anyone. The Chargers are grossly overrated here. The Cardinals lose in a close one, but this will be a one score game throughout.

Louisville Cardinals (-5) at Arkansas State Red Wolves

Saturday October 2, 2010 7:00 PM EST

Louisville comes into this game with a 1-2 record coming off at tough loss at Oregon State which they lost 35-28. Arkansas State also brings a losing record to the party with only one credible opponent, that being Auburn. They lost that game at Auburn 52-26. Their record sits at 1-3, with their one win coming at home.

The biggest shocker coming into this game is the performance the Red Wolves have gotten out of their Sophomore QB Ryan Aplin. Aplin has thrown for 1,196 yards with 6 TDs and 2 Ints. Aplin is the reason this passing attack is ranked 9th in the country. The defense has not helped the Hawks at all allowing over 34 points a game, 106th in the nation. Louisville has shown some good potential but need to put up more points. Right now they are averaging 22.3 points per game but their 28 points put up at Oregon State is encouraging. Their defense is only allowing 23.7 points a game, 66th in the nation.

If Louisville can come out and play the way they did at Oregon State, they should leave with a win. With Louisville only giving up 5 points, it makes them the easy football pick. Arkansas State can sling the ball all over the place but vs a decent Louisville team, they might have their work cut out for them. Also the fact the Hawks defense has looked poor could equal a big offensive day for the Cardinals.

Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars

Sunday October 3rd 2010 4:15 PM PST

The Line: Indianapolis -8 1/2

Overview:

The Colts are on fire. They seem to be in mid-season form. The Jaguars won their first game against the Broncos, but have since shut down, losing their last two game by 25 points a piece. The Jaguars are at home, but with one of the worst fan bases in the NFL, it probably won’t matter.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Jaguars aren’t running the ball like they want to. Being in the middle of the pack in the NFL in rushing is not going to be good enough for Jacksonville. They don’t have talent on their offense, aside from Maurice Jones-Drew. If Drew has a fantastic day, they stand a chance to be effective. If not, they are doomed. The Colts have a mediocre run defense, but if the Jaguars can’t find a way to capitalize, they aren’t going to put up points. In their game against the Eagles last week, Jones-Drew had 88 yards on 22 carries. This may not seem so bad, if you are any team except for the Jaguars. They only scored three points in the entire game and lost 28-3. David Gerrard had a good year once upon a time, but he doesn’t have anyone to throw to and his accuracy is trumped by many aspiring junior high quarterbacks.
  • Peyton Manning is on the Colts. The Colts are one dimensional just like the Jaguars are. Without Peyton Manning, they have no shot against anyone. The fact of the matter is, nobody can really stop Manning. He makes the offense so versatile, that the elimination of one facet of their game plan does not spell disaster. Austin Collie is leading the NFL in receiving. Don’t think for a second he is that talented. Sure, he has above average hands and he runs sure routes, but most of it is because Manning knows where he can create mismatches within a defense. Manning will take whatever a defense gives him. The Jaguars are going to give him a lot. The Colts scored a season low 24 points in week one. I expect them to score a season high this week. Look for something in the high thirties.
  • The Colts defense is not as bad as their numbers say they are. When Peyton Manning is on the field, sometimes the offense scores quickly, making the defense go back on the field in a hurry. They are bound to let up points with all of the opportunities being given to the opposition. In the Jaguars case, they punt the ball to their opponent frequently, giving the other team the chance to score frequently. When the Colts score, the other team has a chance to do something. When the Colts scored 38 points against the Giants, that means they kicked off to the Giants eight times, including half time or kickoff. The Giants turned it into 14 points, though the Colts defense dominated the Giants throughout most of the game.

Wrap up:

This one isn’t going to be close. The Colts, in my opinion, are the best team in the league right now. In my sports picks last week, I picked the Colts to wreck the Broncos. They did, so I am not going to hesitate when I pick the Colts to beat the Jaguars by 8 1/2. They have coasted to victories in each game they played a weak opponent. This shouldn’t be any different. Colts win big.
