Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees play host to the Athletics, the Rockies look for a win in San Francisco, and the Fever and Liberty finish off their playoff series.

On the American League schedule for Wednesday it’ll be the White Sox at Cleveland, Boston at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Detroit at Minnesota, Texas at Kansas City, the Angels at Seattle, and Oakland at the Yankees. Brett Anderson (3-5, 3.32 ERA) will take the hill for the A’s on Wednesday, while the Yankees counter with A.J. Burnett (9-12, 5.17 ERA). Lefthander Anderson will be looking to bounce back from an ugly outing against the Rangers in which he picked up the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in just two innings of work. Righthander Burnett, though, was even worse last time out, surrendering nine runs (eight earned) in just 3 1-3 innings against the ChiSox.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it’s then St. Louis at Houston, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, Philadelphia at the Dodgers, San Diego at Arizona, the Mets at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Cincinnati, Washington at Florida, and Colorado at San Francisco. Ubaldo Jimenez (17-5, 2.71 ERA) will take on Tim Lincecum (11-9, 3.80 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Jimenez has lost two straight outings against the Dodgers and Diamondbacks despite giving up just six runs on 12 hits over those 13 innings of work. Jimenez beat the Giants on August 4 (one run over seven innings). Righthander Lincecum has lost five straight starts, going the entire month of August without a victory.

Finally, there’s one game on the WNBA playoff schedule for Wednesday, with Indiana at New York in the third and deciding game of their first-round playoff series. The Fever forced Game 3 with a 75-67 home win over New York in Game 2, with Tamika Catchings scoring a team-high 17 points for Indiana in that contest. Tammy Sutton-Brown added 14 points for the Fever, and Cappie Pondexter poured in 24 for New York.

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The drivers of Formula 1 hit the track in Belgium, while the Red Sox close out their set with the Rays, and the Broncos host the Steelers.

The lone NFL preseason game on the schedule for Sunday has Pittsburgh at Denver. Oddsmakers have the Steelers pegged as 2-point road favorites in that contest, with the total for the game at 36 points. Pittsburgh (2-0 in the preseason) still hasn’t announced who will be their starting quarterback in Week 1 of the regular season (as Ben Roethlisberger begins his suspension); candidates Byron Leftwich and Dennis Dixon will both look to impress against the Broncos on Sunday night. Denver (0-2 in the preseason) saw starting QB Kyle Orton go 16-of-22 for 177 yards passing and two scores in the team’s 25-20 home loss to Detroit last week. Brady Quinn, who is looking to hold off Tim Tebow for the backup gig, went 11-of-17 for 115 yards in the Denver loss.

The American League schedule for Sunday has Kansas City at Cleveland, Detroit at Toronto, the Yankees at the White Sox, Oakland at Texas, Baltimore at the Angels, Minnesota at Seattle, and Boston at Tampa Bay. John Lackey (12-7, 4.51 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Red Sox in that last matchup, while the Rays counter with James Shields (12-11, 4.76 ERA). Righthander Lackey picked up a win over the Mariners in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits over eight innings while fanning 10. Righthander Shields beat the Angels in his last start, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits over six innings, and fanning 10.

Meanwhile, the National League on Sunday has the Cubs at Cincinnati, Houston at the Mets, St. Louis at Washington, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at Colorado, Philadelphia at San Diego, Arizona at San Francisco, and Florida at Atlanta. Josh Johnson (11-5, 2.36 ERA) is set to take on Derek Lowe (11-12, 4.33 ERA) in that Marlins/Braves contest. Righthander Johnson picked up a no-decision against the Mets last time out, giving up four runs (three earned) over five innings; Florida is 2-4 in Johnson’s last six starts. Righthander Lowe is riding a three-game losing streak heading into Sunday’s game; Lowe gave up three runs in six innings vs. the Rockies last game.

Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of Formula 1 get back on the track on Sunday in the Belgian Grand Prix. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel (9/4) and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso (11/4) are the oddsmakers’ choices to win on Sunday, with points leader and Red Bull driver Mark Webber just behind those two at 4/1 odds. McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are pegged at 5/1 and 12/1 odds, respectively, to take the checkered flag in Belgium, with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa at 10/1. No one outside the Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari teams has won an F1 race this season. Webber won the series’ last event, the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 1, and his team is the 4/9 constructors title favorite.

Finally, the Fever will be looking to stave off elimination when they host the Liberty in WNBA playoff action on Sunday. New York won Game 1 of the best-of-three series at home on Thursday night by a score of 85-73, with Cappie Pondexter leading the way with 28 points. Tamika Catchings tossed in a team-high 18 points in the loss for Indiana.

A busy NFL preseason schedule for Saturday offers up Cleveland at Detroit (-2.5), Cincinnati (-3) at Buffalo, Jacksonville (-2.5) at Tampa Bay, Dallas at Houston (-3), Tennessee at Carolina (-3), Seattle at Minnesota (-5.5), Arizona at Chicago (-3.5), San Francisco at Oakland (-1), and the Giants at Baltimore (-4). The Ravens are undefeated so far during the preseason, beating Carolina 17-12 at home in Week 1 and bouncing Washington 23-3 on the road last week. The Giants beat the Jets 31-16 in their exhibition opener, then lost 24-17 to Pittsburgh last week. Giants quarterback Eli Manning will return from his facial injuries to start the game for his team Saturday night.

There’s also one Canadian Football League game on tap for Saturday, with Saskatchewan at Edmonton. The Roughriders (5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS) blasted the Lions 37-13 last time out, while the Eskimos (1-6 SU, 2-5 ATS) are riding a two-game losing streak. Oddsmakers have Saskatchewan pegged as a 7-point road favorite for Saturday.

Over in the National League on Saturday it’s then Philadelphia at San Diego, St. Louis at Washington, the Cubs at Cincinnati, Florida at Atlanta, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at Colorado, Arizona at San Francisco, and Houston at the Mets. Brett Myers (9-7, 3.08 ERA) is slated to pitch for the Astros on Saturday, while the Mets give the ball to Johan Santana (10-8, 2.94 ERA). Righthander Myers got back into the win column last time out, holding the Phillies to two runs on nine hits over his seven innings of work. Lefthander Santana lost to the Astros on August 17, giving up four runs in eight innings.

Finally, the WNBA playoffs continue with two games on Saturday: Seattle at Los Angeles, and Phoenix at San Antonio. The Storm rolled over the Sparks in Game 1 of their first-round series on Wednesday night, winning 79-66 at home behind 17 points and nine rebounds from Lauren Jackson. Marie Ferdinand-Harris tossed in 18 points for Los Angeles in that loss. As well, the Mercury won the opener of their best-of-three series with the Silver Stars by a score of 106-93 at home on Thursday. Candice Dupree had 32 points for Phoenix in the win, while Becky Hammon had 19 points for the Sparks.

The National Football League offers up a pair of Week 3 preseason games on Thursday night, with St. Louis at New England, and Indianapolis at Green Bay. Oddsmakers have the Patriots listed as 7.5-point home favorites in that first matchup as they look to improve on their 2-0 exhibition record. The Rams are 1-1 so far in the preseason, beating Cleveland 19-17 last week. The Colts are winless through the first two weeks of the preseason, while the Packers beat Seattle 27-24 last week for their first win of the exhibition schedule. Green Bay has been pegged as the 3.5-point favorite for Thursday.

Lefthander Liriano last pitched against the White Sox back on August 18, picking up a no-decision after giving up five runs on six hits over his five innings of work. Lefthander Lee was pounded by the Orioles in his last trip to the mound, surrendering eight runs (and four home runs) on 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings of work.

Chris Carpenter (14-4, 2.88 ERA) will get the ball for the Cardinals in that last matchup, while Jordan Zimmermann (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will come up from the minors to pitch for the Nationals. Righthander Carpenter beat the Giants in his last trip to the mound, allowing just one run on five hits over 7 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Zimmermann spent most of the year on the disabled list with an elbow injury; he’s been pitching in Syracuse.

The PGA Tour kicks off its FedExCup playoffs on Thursday morning with The Barclays at Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, New Jersey. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have been listed as the 12/1 co-favorites to win The Barclays this week, with Rory McIlroy sitting third on that odds list at 14/1. Ernie Els, the FedExCup points leader, is back at 30/1, while Steve Stricker, who sits second on that leaderboard, is pegged at 18/1 odds. Jim Furyk had been listed at 25/1 to win The Barclays; he was disqualified on Wednesday for missing the pro-am. Defending champ Heath Slocum is set at 100/1.

Righthander Davis (sore shoulder) is expected to come off the disabled list for Tuesday’s start; he was knocked around by the Twins in his last outing on August 5, allowing six runs over six innings of work. Los Angeles is 5-1 in Santana’s last six starts.

The Giants will give the ball to ace Tim Lincecum (11-7, 3.62 ERA) in that last contest, while the Cards counter with Chris Carpenter (13-4, 2.95 ERA). Righthander Lincecum will be looking to bounce back from a pair of rough outings against the Cubs and Padres in which he gave up 11 earned runs on 16 hits over just 7 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Carpenter fell to the Cubs last time out despite giving up just three runs over six innings.

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will compete under the lights on Saturday night in the Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Jimmie Johnson is pegged as the 11/2 sportsbook favorite for Saturday’s race, with five-time Bristol winner Kurt Busch just behind him on that list at 13/2 odds. Kyle Busch, who won this race last season, is pegged at 7/1 odds to visit victory lane on Saturday night, while Jeff Gordon (another five-time Bristol winner) is at 14/1. Standings leader Kevin Harvick is sitting at 12/1 odds.

There’s just one NFL game on the schedule for Friday, with Cincinnati playing host to Philadelphia at Paul Brown Stadium. The Eagles won their first exhibition game last week, slipping past Jacksonville 28-27 at home. The Bengals opened their preseason schedule with a 16-7 loss to Dallas in the Hall of Fame Game, but then bounced back with a 33-24 home win over Denver last week. The oddsmakers like Terrell Owens’ new team over his old team in Friday’s game, listing the Bengals as a 3-point home favorite.

The Canadian Football League plays its second of just two Week 8 contests on Friday night, with Hamilton at Toronto. The Tiger-Cats (3-4 SU, 3-4 ATS) have won two games in a row, but they’ve only managed to beat last-place Winnipeg so far this season. The Argonauts (5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS) have also won two games in a row, and they beat Montreal 37-22 last week. Toronto is pegged as the 2.5-point home favorite for Friday.

The Rays are expected to send Jeremy Hellickson (3-0, 1.35 ERA) to the mound in that last contest, while the Athletics counter with Vin Mazzaro (6-5, 3.71 ERA). Righthander Hellickson kept his perfect record intact last time out, holding the Orioles to one run on three hits over six innings in a victory. Hellickson has allowed just three runs over his 20 innings of work this season. Righthander Mazzaro is coming off a hard-luck loss to the Twins in which he surrendered just two runs (one earned) on seven hits over six innings, and fanned three.

Jason Marquis (0-5, 14.33 ERA) is slated to get the ball for the Nationals on Friday, and he’ll have to contend with Phillies ace Roy Halladay (15-8, 2.24 ERA). Righthander Marquis picked up his fifth straight loss last time out, giving up five runs on seven hits over four innings of work against the Diamondbacks. Righthander Halladay had no trouble with the Mets in his last trip to the hill, holding them scoreless on four hits over eight innings.

Cliff Lee (10-5, 2.57 ERA) will take on David Price (15-5, 2.84 ERA) in that Rangers/Rays matchup.  Lefthander Lee had to settle for a no-decision against the Yankees in his most recent trip to the mound, surrendering four runs on eight hits over 6 1-3 innings of work (and striking out 11). Lefthander Price beat the Tigers in his last start, allowing just two runs on five hits in five innings pitched. Price walked four and fanned nine that day.

As well, there are four games on the National League schedule for Monday, with Florida at Pittsburgh, San Diego at the Cubs, the Mets at Houston, and the Dodgers at Atlanta. Chad Billingsley (9-7, 3.78 ERA) will take the mound for Los Angeles in that last contest, while the Braves are expected to go with Tommy Hanson (8-8, 3.51 ERA). Righthander Billingsley was tagged with a hard-luck loss last time out against the Phillies, giving up just two runs on five hits over his six innings of work. Righthander Hanson is coming off a no-decision against the Astros in which he gave up one unearned run on two hits over seven innings pitched. Hanson last got a win on July 3.
