AFC Wild-card game: New York Jets at the Cincinnati Bengals: 4:30 EST 1/9/10
January 9, 2010
Today the New York Jets invade Cincinnati one week removed from opening up a can of whoop-ass on the Bengals last week in their home building. The Jets blanked the Bengals in a “win and in” situation and they more than got the job done. The Jets possess a potent rushing attack and statistically superior defense. The also have a rookie QB under center and a first year head coach who has already come out and proclaimed that the Jets are the best team in the NFL and should be favored to win the Superbowl.
Rex, coaching 101. Don’t give the other team any reason or motivation to want to beat you even more than they already have. Now, this is playoff football and there should be no need for any thing extra to get the teams, players, coaches and fans fired up for some good old-fashioned smash mouth playoff football. That being said Rex Ryan did it again. Just like he mismanaged the clock two times earlier this season and potentially cost his team a victory in each occasion, his mouth may now prove to serve the same purpose.
Now, all that being said, I do think that the Bengals are the better all around team. They are home, their run game is just as effective as the Jets, their defense has performed great all season, they have an experienced QB in Carson Palmer and they will be looking to avenge last weeks shutout loss this week when they are actually playing for something. The Bengals will not go far in the playoffs, however, they will secure a home playoff victory in front of the home crowd today in what will most likely be a low scoring affair. This will probably be a three to six point win for the Bengals, however, just enough to cover the spread.
Free Pick: Bengals – 2.5
NFC Wild-card Round: Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys 8:00 PM EST. 1/9/10
January 9, 2010
Today’s free pick in the NFC wild-card round is a tough call as both the Dallas
Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles are both capable of making it all the way to the Superbowl. The Cowboys enter this contest stealing the title as the hottest team in the NFC from the same Philadelphia Eagles just last week. Everyone was talking about the Eagles and how they had all the momentum and how Tony Romo cannot win games late in the season when they count. Then wham, just like that the Cowboys blanked a confused and lethargic Eagles squad stealing the crown of the NFC East.
That leads us to today, a rematch. The Eagles will be prepared to stop the Cowboys run attack and force Tony Romo to beat them with Witten and Austin. The defense of Philadelphia will be ready this week as we will see different looks that include a lot more blitz packages and different looks. The Eagles have a very well rounded team in all three phases of the game and Desean Jackson could be the difference maker tonight returning punts and streaking down the field on offense.
From a gambling standpoint this game is easy. The Eagles will win outright and cover. The odds of the Dallas Cowboys beating and covering against the same team THREE times in one season is very difficult. The Eagles have a brainiac head coach ( Belicek-like) who will have his team more than prepared for tonight’s tilt. Take the Eagles and take them with confidence. If you can take the money line I would recommend you use that to your advantage and put an equal wager on both. The Eagles are the clear play here and will make their way to round two and take on the New Orleans Saints next week in the Superdome.
Free Pick: Philadelphia Eagles + 3.5
