Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The National Football League offers up three more preseason games, while the Rangers host the Red Sox, and the Marlins meet the Reds.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL continues its first week of preseason action on Friday night with three games: Buffalo at Washington, Kansas City at Atlanta, and Jacksonville at Philadelphia. Oddsmakers have the home team listed as a 3-point favorite in each of those three contests, with the totals at 32.5 (Bills/Redskins), 33.5 (Jaguars/Eagles), and 34.5 (Chiefs/Falcons). The Eagles will be unveiling their new-look offense on Friday – if only briefly – as Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook were both cut loose in the offseason. McNabb will see some action under center in his new gig with the Redskins.

As well, there’s one Canadian Football League game on the Friday schedule, with Hamilton at Winnipeg. The Tiger-Cats (2-4 SU, 2-4 ATS) and Blue Bombers (2-4 SU, 3-3 ATS) have already met three times this season, most recently on August 7 in Hamilton with the home side winning 29-22 as a 3-point favorite. The oddsmakers have pegged the Blue Bombers as 4.5-point home favorites for Friday’s game, with the total set at 54.5 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Friday offers up Seattle at Cleveland, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Detroit at the White Sox, the Yankees at Kansas City, Oakland at Minnesota, Toronto at the Angels, and Boston at Texas. Josh Beckett (3-2, 6.21 ERA) is expected to go up against Tommy Hunter (9-1, 3.01 ERA) in that Red Sox/Rangers matchup. Righthander Beckett was knocked around by the rival Yankees in most recent  trip to the mound, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits over his 4 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Hunter dominated the Mariners last time out, throwing 6 1-3 scoreless innings. Hunter also beat the BoSox back in his July 15 start (two runs in 6 2-3 innings).

Over in the National League on Friday it’ll be Arizona at Washington, Philadelphia at the Mets, the Dodgers at Atlanta, the Cubs at St. Louis, Pittsburgh at Houston, Milwaukee at Colorado, San Diego at San Francisco, and Florida at Cincinnati. Josh Johnson (10-4, 1.97 ERA) will get the ball for the Marlins in that last matchup, while the Reds counter with Edinson Volquez (2-1, 4.94 ERA). Righthander Johnson took a no-decision against the Cardinals last time out, giving up two runs on five hits over eight innings; he last won on July 17. Righthander Volquez is coming off a no-decision against the Cubs in which he gave up one run on six hits over six innings of work. Volquez fanned two that game.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are five games on the WNBA’s schedule for Friday, with Phoenix at Indiana, New York at Atlanta, Minnesota at Washington, Tulsa at San Antonio, and Seattle at Connecticut. The Storm (25-4 SU, 17-10-2 ATS) ride a three-game winning streak into Friday’s contest, beating Atlanta 80-70 last time out; Lauren Jackson had 14 points for Seattle in that win. The Sun (14-15 SU, 15-13-1 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from an 84-74 loss to Washington; Renee Montgomery scored 17 points.
