Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Colts begin their preseason against the Niners, the Nationals host the D-Backs, and the Sprint Cup Series hits the track at Michigan.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The National Football League has two preseason games on tap for Sunday, with San Francisco at Indianapolis in the afternoon, and Denver at Cincinnati under the lights. The oddsmakers have the Niners pegged as 3-point road favorites in that first matchup, with Colts quarterback Peyton Manning not expected to see much action for the home side. The Bengals are then listed as 3.5-point home favorites in Sunday’s later matchup.

As well, the Canadian Football League finishes up the seventh week of its season with Edmonton at Calgary on Sunday night. The Eskimos (1-5 SU, 2-4 ATS) were edged 29-28 at home by Toronto last week, while the Stampeders (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) are coming off a 27-22 win over B.C. Calgary is pegged as the 8.5-point home favorite for Sunday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Sunday has Seattle at Cleveland, Detroit at the White Sox, Oakland at Minnesota, the Yankees at Kansas City, Boston at Texas, Toronto at the Angels, and Baltimore at Tampa Bay. The Orioles will hand the ball to Jake Arrieta (4-3, 5.29 ERA) in that last matchup, while the Rays counter with Jeremy Hellickson (2-0, 1.29 ERA). Righthander Arrieta got plenty of offensive support last time out against the Indians, as he picked up the win despite giving up six runs (five earned) over his six innings of work. Righthander Hellickson has fit right in since joining Tampa’s rotation, winning both his starts against the Tigers and Twins (two runs over 14 innings).

Over on Sunday’s National League schedule it’s then Florida at Cincinnati, the Dodgers at Atlanta, Pittsburgh at Houston, the Cubs at St. Louis, Milwaukee at Colorado, San Diego at San Francisco, Philadelphia at the Mets, and Arizona at Washington. The D-Backs’ Barry Enright (3-2, 2.64 ERA) will take on the Nats’ Stephen Strasburg (5-3, 3.07  ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Enright beat the Nationals back on August 5 (two runs over six innings), and he’s given up three or fewer runs in each of his eight starts this season. Righthander Strasburg was rocked in his return from the DL by the Marlins last time out, surrendering six runs on six hits over just 4 1-3 innings that game.

Roaring around the track . . .

The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series return to the oval on Sunday, taking the track in the Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Juan Montoya won last week at the Watkins Glen road course, but he’s back at +1800 on the oddsmakers’ list to take the checkered flag at Michigan. Jimmie Johnson is the +300 favorite to visit victory lane on Sunday, with Kasey Kahne at +700, and Tony Stewart at +800. Denny Hamlin, who won Michigan’s June race, is at +1500 to sweep the 2010 events on the track, while Carl Edwards, who has won twice at Michigan in his Cup career, is also sitting at +1500 odds.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, there are three WNBA games on tap for Sunday, with Indiana at Connecticut, San Antonio at Minnesota, and Seattle at Washington. The Storm (25-5 SU, 17-11-2 ATS) suffered a rare loss last time out, falling 88-68 on the road to Connecticut. The Mystics (18-12 SU, 17-12-1 ATS) topped Minnesota 61-58 in their most recent matchup.
