#8 Alabama Crimson Tide at Tennessee Volunteers

Saturday October 23, 2010 7:00 PM EST

Line: Alabama -16.5

Alabama must be rejoicing the fact that they don’t have a ranked opponent this week. They had a rough 3 game stretch vs ranked opponents then 2 week vs non-ranked opponents. They beat non-ranked Ole Miss last week 23-10 and now get non-ranked Tennessee before facing two more ranked foe. They are 6-1 on the season with a 3-1 SEC record. Their one loss did come on the road and they have a 2-1 road record. Tennessee has been hugely disappointing this year with a 2-4 record and are 0-3 vs SEC opponents. They are 2-2 at home this year but their two victories were vs much weaker opponents.

Alabama’s defense has not taken a hit this year. They are 5th best allowing only 12.9 points a game. Their offense has been good as well posting 33.3 points a game, 31st overall. They have had good balance. Their passing game is 46th with 243.6 yards a game, while their rushing game is 37th with 183 yards a game. After missing the first two games, Junior RB and defending Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram has 456 yards with 6 TDs. He has been held under 100 yards the last three games and look for the Crimson Tide to make it an issue for Ingram to get the ball early and often.

The Volunteers have been below average on both sides of the football. Their defense comes in at 75th overall allowing 27.5 points a game. Their offense is ranked 84th with 23.3 points a game. They have been ineffective rushing the ball as they average 115 yards a game, 94th worst. Their passing game has been a bit better with 206.8 yards a game, 71st overall. Tennessee announced earlier this week they will get Freshman QB Taylor Bray some first half playing time. How much time is the big question.

Sports picks are often decided by QB play. With Tennessee coming out and saying that they want a Freshman QB into this game, shocks me. I can’t imagine why you would throw a Freshman into a game vs the 5th ranked defense of Alabama. Alabama will look to get its ground game going after a few tough weeks.
