Arizona St. Sun Devils at Washington Huskies

Saturday October 9th, 2010 10:00 PM EST

Line: Washington -2

Overview:

The Washington Huskies are coming off a huge win on the road at USC. USC is notorious for dropping a Pac-10 game each year to an inferior opponent, so we all knew it was bound to happen again this year. Washington has proven to be inconsistent, losing to BYU and Nebraska, beating USC, and dominating Syracuse. Arizona St. has lost three heart breakers in a row. Their opponents have been formidable, but mental errors and miscues have landed them at 2-3. This will be the week that Washington gains some stability or Arizona St. finally puts it together.

Keys to the Game:

  • Jake Locker will probably be a first round pick, but he is human. The Sun Devils need to make him look like he did against Nebraska, throwing two picks on terrible throws. By getting him out of his rhythm, he has proven he can be rattled. Pressure is going to be key here, so forcing him out of his comfort zone in the pocket is a necessity. The Sun Devils have been decent against the pass thus far, but Locker is the best quarterback they have faced all year.
  • Deantre Lewis needs to continue his 100 yard game streak. Back to back to back 100 yard games against two ranked opponents and a tough Oregon St. team is an achievement. He closed in on 200 all purpose yards against Oregon. Washington might have looked good last week, but Lewis is playing the best football of his life. This is great news for a Sun Devil team who has struggled on the ground in recent years.
  • Steven Threet has done everything he can to make the Sun Devils lose. He has thrown seven interceptions in two games. I know he has thrown the ball well at times, but his lapses in judgment have sorely cost the Sun Devils victories. At times he looks wonderful, but once he gets flustered, he forces the ball carelessly into coverage. ASU fans are likely to say, “Why would he throw that?” about five times a game. You can’t win the game when you throw the ball to the other team. Three touchdowns in a game are great, but when you throw four interceptions everyone forgets about them.

Wrap up:

I see Steven Threet playing a little bit more conservatively. If the Sun Devils can manage to limit turnovers, they will be able to come away with a victory. By going to their ground game, ASU has a chance to get it done without making Steven Threet make too many decisions. I feel as though you might see the hangover over affect, as Washington is elated after knocking off USC. Their focus was on that game before the seasons started, as their coach has USC roots. The Sun Devils were the furthest thing from their mind.
