College Football Pick Arkansas at Mississippi State 11-20-10

November 17, 2010

#13 Arkansas Razorbacks at #21 Mississippi State Bulldogs

Saturday November 20, 2010 7:00 PM EST

Line: Arkansas -3

Arkansas has been a roll as of late, winning their last 4 games. Their 2 loses on the season came against Alabama and at Auburn. Both teams have had the #1 ranking at one point this season. Arkansas is 1-2 against ranked opponents. Mississippi State lost their last game at Alabama 30-10. Before that loss, they had a 6 game winning streak going. They are 1-3 against ranked teams this season.

Stats to consider:

Arkansas Razorbacks:

  • The Razorbacks are 8-2 with a 4-2 SEC record.
  • They are 2-1 on the road.
  • Points against per game: 21.9 (38th)
  • Points for per game: 37.9 (13th)
  • Passing yards a game: 343.6 (3rd)
  • Rushing yards a game: 148.3 (66th)

Mississippi State Bulldogs:

  • The Bulldogs are 7-3 with a 3-3 SEC record.
  • They are 5-1 at home, this being their last home game of the season.
  • Points against per game: 18.3 (15th)
  • Points for per game: 26.3 (66th)
  • Passing yards a game: 163.1 (101st)
  • Rushing yards a game: 211.7 (18th)

What to watch for:

  • Arkansas Junior QB Ryan Mallet has throw for 2,967 yards 24 TDs and 8 Ints. He is fresh off a 5 TD performance last week. Mallet’s favorite target has been Junior WR Greg Childs who has 659 yards and 6 TDs. Childs has not played the last two games, and Mallet has still put up good stats.
  • Leading the ‘Backs running game is Sophomore RB Knile Davis with 844 yards and 10 TDs. Last weekend Davis got 11 carries and ran for 182 yards and a TD. That is an average of 16.5 yards a carry.
  • The Bulldogs passing game has lacked this season. Junior RB Vick Ballard has stepped up with 699 yards and 12 TDs this season. Also adding to the ground game has been Junior QB Chris Relf with 514 rushing yards and 3 TDs. Relf has passed for 996 yards 7 TDs and 4 Ints.

This is one of the tougher football picks of the weekend. Arkansas has been playing lights out, while Mississippi State hit a speed bump last week at Alabama. The one factor that must be considered is that this is the last home game for the Bulldogs on the season. This is their SEC championship game as they are eliminated from winning the SEC West. For Arkansas this is a big game as well, as they play LSU next week at home. Expect this one to be close, but I think that Arkansas is the better football team.
