College Football Pick California at Washington State 11-6-10

Cal Golden Bears at Washington State Cougars

Saturday November 6, 2010 4:00 PM EST

Line: Cal -14.5

Cal has been horrible away from home this year, while Washington State has been terrible everywhere. This Pac-10 showdown lacks some of the hype of other Pac-10 games this week, but should be a good one.

Stats to consider:

Cal Bears:

  • Cal is 4-4 with a 2-3 Pac-10 record.
  • They are 0-4 on the road. Only one loss has come by less than 21 points and that was at Arizona 10-9.
  • Points against per game: 22.4 (48th)
  • Points for per game: 31.3 (42nd)
  • Passing yards a game: 197 (80th)
  • Rushing yards a game: 158.9 (49th)

Washington State Cougars:

  • The Cougars are 1-8 with an 0-6 Pac-10 record.
  • They are 1-3 at home this season and the win came vs a Division 2 Montana State 23-22.
  • Points against per game: 40.1 (116th)
  • Points for per game: 18.1 (107th)
  • Passing yards a game: 258.1 (34th)
  • Rushing yards a game: 73.2 (117th)

What to watch for:

  • It looks right now as if Cal will be without starting Senior QB Kevin Riley as he has a sprained knee. Riley has 1,409 yards 13 TDs and 6 Ints on the season. He will be replaced by Junior QB Brock Mansion if he can’t go. Last week Mansion replaced Riley and went 14-24 with 138 yards and a TD.
  • If Cal is without Riley, look for Shane Vereen to get a heavy workload. Vereen has 774 yards and 10 TDs on the season. He has only received 41 carries the last 3 games as Cal was either getting blown out or blowing someone else out.
  • The Cougars Sophomore QB Jeff Tuel has 2,233 yards with 14 TDs and 11 Ints. His favorite target has been Freshman WR Marquess Wilson who has 885 yards and 4 TDs.

Playing without your starting QB is always tough. This sports pick looks easy to me. Cal hasn’t played well on the road all season, as they are 0-4. Washington State has only been within 2 TDs in three games this season. 2 of those games came on the road, while the other was vs a poor Montana State. Cal should struggle to score as the cougars should stack the box. Look for Cougars QB Jeff Tuel to have a good game as they might get their first victory vs a Division 1 team. Take the points in this one.
