Central Florida Knights at Houston Cougars

Friday November 5, 2010 8:00 PM EST

Line: Central Florida -2.5

After the loss of Case Keenum, Houston’s season was thought to be over. They have managed a 3-2 record since then, and have heavily relied on their running game and that has worked very well. Central Florida bring in a 4 game winning streak and this is a huge game for their flawless C-USA record.

Stats to consider:

Central Florida Knights:

  • The Knights are 6-2 with a 4-0 C-USA record.
  • They are 2-1 on the road.
  • Points against per game: 16.5 (11th)
  • Points for per game: 32.9 (30th)
  • Passing yards a game: 176.6 (92nd)
  • Rushing yards a game: 199.9 (22nd)

Houston Cougars:

  • The Cougars are 5-3 with a 4-1 C-USA record.
  • They are 3-1 at home.
  • Points against per game: 28 (81st)
  • Points for per game: 41.6 (8th)
  • Passing yards a game: 299.3 (13th)
  • Rushing yards a game: 169.4 (43rd)

What to watch for:

  • Houston Freshman QB David Piland has come in for Keenum and stepped up in a big way. He has thrown for 1,108 yards 11 TDs and only 3 Ints. Piland has only made 4 starts and last week in a 56-17 win at Memphis he went 20-23 for 292 yards and 5 TDs. Junior WR Patrick Edwards has been huge for the Cougars as he has 639 yards and 8 TDs.
  • Houston has gotten great production out of two running backs this season. Junior RB Bryce Beall has 638 yards and 12 TDs. Beall’s health is in question as he had only 2 rushes for 9 yards last week before he suffered a ┬áknee injury. It doesn’t sound too serious as he was held out as a precautionary measure. Freshman Michael Hayes may be needed, he has 380 yards and 8 TDs. He also has 234 receiving yards and 2 more TDs.
  • The Knights Junior RB Ronnie Weaver leads this rushing attack with 638 yards and 10 TDs. He had his best game of the season last week vs ECU when he rushed for 180 yards and 2 TDs on 30 carries.
  • UCF is lead by Freshman QB Jeffrey Godfrey. Godfrey has 1,006 yards 4 TDs and 4 Ints. He also has 394 rushing yards and 5 TDs.

Balance on teams is what makes sports picks easy. Houston has found some amazing balance after the loss of Case Keenum. Freshman David Piland has shown some great maturity while Bryce Beall has been huge for the Cougars. The Cougars should stuff the box and force Freshman QB Jeffrey Godfrey beat them. Godfrey hasn’t been a great passer this year, and I’m not buying the Knights defense on the road.
