College Football Pick Colorado State at Air Force 10-9-10

October 6, 2010

Colorado State Rams (1-4) vs. #25 Air Force Falcons (4-1)

Saturday, October 9, 2010 2:00PM EST

Line: Air Force -24.5

Air Force is coming off a really big win against their rivals, beating Navy 6 to 14. The win solidified the team as number one in the nation in the running game, as they are averaging 373.6 rushing yards per game. They can’t pass the ball well this season (117th in nation), but their running attack has put them in the higher rankings this year. Colorado State is coming off a shutout loss to TCU last weekend, that sunk their record to 1-4.

Keys to the Game:

–          Air Force’s running game is college football’s best kept secret so far. Their quarterback, Tim Jefferson has run for 349 yards and seven touchdowns so far this season. Their senior running back, Jared Tew has been sensational for them, rushing for 482 yards and 2 touchdowns. Last week he had 17 touches for 111 yards. They also have another running weapon in Asher Clark, who’s run for 423 yards and a touchdown.

–          Colorado State shouldn’t be overlooked. Their best asset is the passing game, behind Pete Thomas. Thomas has passed for 1,197 yards so far this season, and if they get a few scores ahead of Air Force, the Falcons won’t be able to go to their running game when facing the clock.

–          Colorado State’s quarterback Thomas wasn’t able to find his leading receiver Byron Steele at all in their loss against TCU last week. Their other receiver Matt Yemm, only caught one pass for three yards in that game.

The Rams’ only bright spot came in a tight 34-36 win against Idaho two weeks ago. Air Force will be at home, and will be doing everything to not fall off of the Top 25 rankings. Their running game needs to be there Saturday afternoon, because Colorado State can find some scoring when throwing it in the air.
