Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at #22 Virginia Tech Hokies

Thursday November 4, 2010 7:30 PM EST

Line: Virginia Tech -13

Virginia Tech comes into this ACC football game with a 6 game winning streak. They lost two tough football games, by a combined 8 points to start the season. Since that stumble of a start, this Virginia Tech team has looked like the team we all thought they would be. Georgia Tech lost last week to snap a 3 game winning streak.

Stats to consider:

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets:

  • The Yellow Jackets are 5-3 with a 3-2 ACC record.
  • They are 2-2 on the road. Their two wins came by 6 points or less vs below average football teams in North Carolina and Wake Forest.
  • Points against per game: 23.6 (57th)
  • Points for per game: 29.5 (49th)
  • Passing yards a game: 84.8 (119th)
  • Rushing yards a game: 317.4 (1st)

Virginia Tech Hokies:

  • The Hokies are 6-2 with a 4-0 ACC record.
  • They are 3-1 in home games with a 3 home game winning streak.
  • Points against per game: 20 (29th)
  • Points for per game: 37 (14th)
  • Passing yards a game: 209.9 (70th)
  • Rushing yards a game: 214.8 (16th)

What to watch for:

  • If your looking to watch a ton of big-play passes, look elsewhere as both teams rank outside the top 70. Georgia Tech is ranked second worst in the nation in passing yards this season.
  • There will be a bunch of rushing yards in this game however. The Yellow Jackets are ranked #1 in the nation averaging 317.4 yards on the ground a game. The Hokies have been good on the ground with 214.8 rushing yards a game.
  • The game for the Yellow Jackets will ride on the back of Senior QB Joshua Nesbitt. Nesbitt has 674 passing yards with 7 TDs and 3 Ints in 8 games. The biggest threat when playing Nesbitt is his ability to scramble. He has 651 rushing yards and 8 TDs. Last week in a 27-13 loss at Clemson, Nesbitt was 6-19 with 83 yards 1 TD and 1 Int with just two yards on the ground.
  • Hokie Senior QB Tyrod Taylor also has been a multi-dimensional threat as well. Taylor has thrown for 1,602 yards 15 TDs and 3 Ints. He leads the team in rushing yards with 527 yards and 3 TDs.

Both these football teams have excellent rushing games making this a tough football pick. The Yellow Jackets lead the nation in rushing yards a game, but last week Clemson shut down the Hokie passing game. If Virginia Tech can shut down the Hokie passing game, they should win this game easily. Look for Tyrod Taylor to extend the Hokie’s winning streak to 7 straight.
