This is the game everyone has been waiting for. The National Championship Game this year features the 2 best in college football. Oregon finished their season off 12-0 and coasted thru the Pac-10. They were 3-0 vs ranked opponents this season, all 3 were Pac-10 opponents. The most impressive of those was a 52-31 win over #9 Stanford. Their other 2 ranked Pac-10 opponents were USC and Arizona, both fell off at the end of the season. Auburn finished their season off 13-0 in the very tough SEC. They were 5-0 vs ranked opponents, all 5 came out of the SEC. They beat South Carolina once during the regular season, and once in the SEC championship game. South Carolina was ranked #12 in the regular season matchup and #19 in the SEC championship game. They also beat #11 Alabama, #6 LSU, and #12 Arkansas.

What to watch for:

  • Oregon Sophomore QB Darron Thomas has thrown for 2,518 yards 28 TDs and 7 Ints. He has rushed for 492 yards and 5 TDs as well. His main target on the season was Senior WR Jeff Maehl who has 943 yards and 12 TDs.
  • The key to the Oregon offense has been Sophomore RB LaMichael James. James has rushed for 1,682 yards and 21 TDs. He also has 169 receiving yards and another TD. The 2 games that were decided by 11 points or less, James rushed for less than 100 yards.
  • Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Junior QB Cam Newton has thrown for 2,589 yards 28 TDs and 6 Ints. He leads the team in rushing with 1,409 yards and 20 more TDs. His main target has been Junior WR Darvin Adams who has 909 yards and 7 TDs.
  • Auburn Freshman RB Michael Dyer has rushed for 950 yards and 5 TDs.

This is the football pick of the new year. That is, until the super bowl. Oregon has the best offense in the nation. Their defense also ranks inside the top 15. They have been able to run the ball extremely well, with the passing game ranking inside the top 50. Auburn swept arguably the toughest conference in college football in the SEC. They rank 4th in offensive scoring while their scoring defense comes in at 54th. They never allowed more than 34 points while their highest scoring total was 65 vs the #12 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. This is going to be a game for the ages and really could go either way.
