Texas A&M (3-0) at Oklahoma State (3-0)

Thursday, September 30th, 7:30 PM EST

Line: Oklahoma State -3

This game is nationally broadcasted for good reason; both teams are entering into this game with polished records of 3-0. Behind Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State has had an efficient campaign for their season so far. They have outscored their opponents by a total of 88 points in their first three games. But the team did run into a scare when they slipped past the pass-happy Troy (1-2) with a final score of 41-38. On the other side of the field, Texas A&M hold on to their undefeated record after also taking care of their early expected wins.  Texas A&M needs to maintain Oklahoma State’s sizzling passing game to come out as winners.

Keys to the Games

* Jerrod Johnson is the pulse of Texas A&M’s fortunes. It’s critical for Texas A&M’s front line to protect Johnson, and for the receiving core to execute their assignments when their number is called. Although the first three wins were against some moderate competition (Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana Tech and FIU), Texas A&M can flash a vicious passing game. Johnson is looking to rebound after chucking four interceptions against FIU’s below average defense. One can’t forget the excellent throws he had the week before that when he threw for 349 yards and four touchdowns.

* Oklahoma State’s connection between quarterback Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon is heating up rapidly. The duo is on an offensive surge, they showed up against a shoddy Tulsa secondary in their second week; Weeden hitting Blackmon for 6 receptions, 174 yards and 3 touchdowns. They ultimately went on to break their old passing record with 574 yards, with Weeden having a sensational performance (23/32, 409 yds, 6 TD). The team is currently ranked 2nd overall in scoring, averaging 57 points heading into this game.

* Texas A&M also has the better defensive squad. Brandon Weeden will need to spread the field to find alternative receivers like Ryan Swope, Terrence McCoy and Uzoma Nwachukwu, as Texas A&M have a set game plan to stop Weeden’s number one target. Texas A&M’s defensive staff has allowed a total of 43 points all season, compared to Oklahoma State’s 83.

It’s obvious Weeden’s play this season has created enough noise to make them the favorites in this game. But neither of these teams have yet to show their true caliber with the season, their non-conference shootouts against weaker teams has warmed them up for this Big 12 showdown. This is very well the proving grounds for both teams. The Aggies’ Jerrod Johnson has seen this Oklahoma State defense more than twice and is looking to rebound from both a bad game last week and a close 5-point loss to OK State in last season’s meeting. Oklahoma State will come out firing, but Texas A&M’s improved defense and a stellar game Jerrod will complete this upset.
