UNLV Rebels (1-4) vs. West Virginia Mountaineers (3-1)

Saturday, October 9, 2010 3:30PM EST

Line: West Virginia -27.5

The West Virginia Mountaineers were having a terrific campaign this season until they suffered a tough loss against fifteenth-ranked LSU last week. Still, the team stands strong at 3-1, allowing opponents to average only 14.5 points against them this year. UNLV has faced one of the toughest schedules this season, facing Wisconsin, Utah and a surging Nevada team last week. The Rebels have only been able to win one of their five games this season, beating New Mexico, 45-10, two weeks ago. They head to Mountaineer Field this weekend seeking a tough win against West Virginia. The Mountaineers have won their only two games played at home this season.

Keys to the Game:

–          Geno Smith had his weakest game of the season last week against LSU. Even though the sophomore threw two touchdowns, he only managed to throw for 119 yards, completing 14 out of 29 of his passes.

–          Out of the Mountaineers’ dangerous receiving core, Jock Sanders has been the most consistent. The short, 5’7’’ receiver caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown last week. He currently is tied for a team-high in receptions with 24. The team also has Tavon Austin also been able to become a weekly threat for any defense, with his 24 catches for 314 yards and two touchdowns.

–          UNLV showed some of their offense in their loss against Nevada last week. Omar Clayton threw for 214 yards, with one touchdown and an interception. Junior receiver, Phillip Payne put up his best numbers of the season, catch eight passes for 170 yards. The team must continue riding the connection between these two players on offense, for their running game has been absent all season.

The Mountaineers will be able to successfully bounce back from their loss against LSU. Their running game hasn’t lived up to its potential, and it doesn’t help that the team’s leading back, Noel Devine is still being bothered by a toe injury he suffered last week. Ryan Clarke will need to step it up for this team to have a running game to go to. The Rebels have been beat around all season with their tough schedule, but they should be able to not get blown out in this meeting.
