College Football Pick USC at Stanford 10-9-10

October 6, 2010

USC Trojans at #16 Stanford Cardinals

Saturday October 9, 2010 8 PM EST

Line: Stanford -9.5

This game has huge implications on how the Pac-10 turns out. Both teams are 4-1 with an in conference record of 1-1. USC lost last week at home vs Washington while the Cardinals were in Oregon where the Ducks put on an offensive clinic. Both teams will look to bounce back after their first loss and USC will have to play much better football if they want to make this one a contest.

USC brings in a 3-0 record on the road into this game. They haven’t looked overly impressive in those road wins. This offense has put up some points this year averaging 35.8 points per game, 28th in the nation. Their defense has been worse than average allowing 23.8 points a game which is 63rd in the nation. The Trojans have been able to run this ball this year and will need to make that the focal point of their offense. Senior RB Allen Bradford has shown great skill in running for 500 yards and 3 TDs. The amazing thing is that Bradford is averaging 9.8 yards a carry. Adding onto the 15th ranked rushing attack of the Trojans is Junior RB Marc Tyler. Tyler has 348 yards on the season with 5 TDs. The X-factor in this game will be the play of Sophomore QB Matt Barkley. Barkley has thrown for 1,127 yards with 12 TDs and 4 Ints.

Stanford will need to improve upon a game last week where they allowed Lamichael James to run wild with over 200 yards rushing. Their defense will need to prove its worth. Their defense ranks at 45th in the nation allowing 21.4 points a game. They did allow 52 points last week on the road in Oregon. The offense has been the key to the success of the Cardinals. The Cardinals rank 4th in points scored with 44.6 points a game. Their passing yards and rushing yards a game rank inside the top 30 in the nation. Junior QB Andrew Luck looks to improve his Heisman resume which stands at 1,253 passing yards with 13 TDs and 4 Ints. Luck also has ran for 202 yards on the ground with 2 TDs. They will need a strong game out of Sophomore RB Stephan Taylor. Taylor has rushed for 378 yards with 2 TDs. Taylor also has 184 yards thru the air with another score.

Both teams are coming off tough losses and will look to bounce back. Stanford has the easier path in playing at home after playing the best offense in the nation on the road. Their defense has not been horrible and will need to stop the USC running game and force Matt Barkley to beat them. With football picks, I like the better defense. Stanford has looked like they can hold people, with the exception of last week. While USC hasn’t really been able to stop anybody. I think this game is going to be very exciting with a bunch of points put on the board. I think Stanford has too much fire power for the Trojans and the Cardinals will prove to be one of the best the Pac-10 has to offer.
