College Football Pick Vanderbilt at Arkansas 10-30-10

October 28, 2010

Vanderbilt Commodores at #19 Arkansas Razorbacks

Saturday October 30, 2010 7:00 PM EST

Line: Arkansas -20

The headline coming into this game is the health of Arkansas QB Ryan Mallet. Mallet hurt his shoulder two weeks ago but Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino came out and said Mallet would practice this week. For Vanderbilt this game will revolve around the play of the offense. Their offense ranks outside the top 100 in scoring and their passing game is also outside the top 100.

Stats to consider:

Vanderbilt Commodores:

  • The Commodores are 2-5 with a 1-3 SEC record.
  • They are 1-2 on the road with one loss coming by more than 20 points.
  • Points against per game: 24.9 (64th)
  • Points for a game: 18.9 (105th)
  • Passing yards a game: 159.6 (105th)
  • Rushing yards a game: 146.3 (68th)

Arkansas Razorbacks:

  • The Razorbacks are 5-2 on the season with a 2-2 SEC record.
  • They are 4-1 at home with the one loss coming at the hands of Alabama.
  • Points against per game: 23.4 (51st)
  • Points for per game: 33 (33rd)
  • Rushing yards a game: 125.6 (89th)
  • Passing yards a game: 352.1 (2nd)

What to watch for:

  • Arkansas has an extremely aggressive passing game when Ryan Mallet is healthy. Mallet on the year has thrown for 2,040 yards with 15 TDs and 7 Ints. In his last game vs Mississippi he threw for 196 yards a TD and an Int.
  • The Razorbacks defense has been very solid this year only allowing 23.4 points a game. This could spell trouble for Vanderbilt as they average only 18.9 points a game, which should be tough to get on the road.
  • Leading Vanderbilt on the ground has been Sophomore RB Warren Norman who has 395 yards with 4 TDs. He is averaging 6 yards a carry and if Vanderbilt wants to keep this one close, they should get Norman the ball early and often.

This sports pick is easy on paper. Arkansas is the much better team. I’m not willing to count out Vanderbilt though as they put up a good fight last week at home vs South Carolina in which they lost 21-7. This one will come down to how well the Vanderbilt offense plays as well as the play of Arkansas QB Ryan Mallet.
