College Football Pick Western Kentucky at Florida International 10-9-10

October 6, 2010

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (0-4) vs. Florida International Golden Panthers (0-4)

Saturday, October 9, 2010 3:30PM EST

Line: Florida International (FIU) -9.5

These two winless groups find themselves in this blessed Sun Belt matchup that will end up finally giving one of these squads a much need taste of victory. Neither team has been able to look good this season. Florida International has had a few excellent plays throughout the season, but has never been able to seal a game. Last week FIU was abused 44 to 17 by Pittsburgh, while Western Kentucky is coming off a bye week after losing to South Florida the week before.

Keys to the Game:

–          The FIU Golden Panthers’ quarterback, Wesley Carroll has had a solid season airing the ball, but struggles whenever near the end zone. His performance, at times, was helpful for the team. He ended up throwing for 223 yards but couldn’t find anyone for a touchdown.

–          The team also relies on their young sophomore running back, Jeremiah Harden. So far the running back has rushed for 226 yards and a touchdown this season. FIU does like to spread the ball pretty well when passing, players such as Weayne Times, Greg Ellingson and T.Y. Hilton have all seen their respective looks from Carroll this season.

–          Western Kentucky’s offense is led by their quarterback Kawaun Jakes and running back, Bobby Rainey. So far the team’s leading back, Rainey, has rushed for 508 yards and five touchdowns off of 94 touches this season. Jakes also likes to find his two leading receivers Marcus Vasquez and Jack Doyle.

Florida International will not be able to cover a large lead over Western Kentucky. While the Hilltoppers are the weaker team in this matchup, their role players on offense should be able to attack FIU’s shoddy defense.
