Arizona State Sun Devils at USC Trojans

Saturday November 6th, 2010 10:30 PM EST

Line: Southern Cal -6

The 4-4 Arizona St. Sun Devils travel to the University of Southern California to take on the 5-3 Trojans. Both teams have been inconsistent over their last few games, but have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season. This game will determine who will sit in the middle of the Pac-10 standings and who will move into the upper echelon of teams.

Keys to the Game:

  • Matt Barkley is one of the best quarterbacks in the country. He is in a pro system and he makes pro throws, as well as reads. Barkley has the poise of a senior quarterback, despite being only a sophomore. In 2010, he has thrown 21 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has pin point accuracy and underrated athleticism, making him a sure fire first round pick when he is eligible. He should be able to handle the ASU secondary fairly easily, despite ASU’s surprising production, especially at the cornerback position.
  • Steven Threet determines whether the Sun Devils win or lose. When Threet throws for more touchdowns than interceptions, the Sun Devils are 4-0. When he fails to do so, they are 0-4. Threet has a habit of throwing bad passes at the worst possible time. While he looks the part at times, there are a few awful throws a drive that resonate in the memories of the fans. Threet needs to limit turnovers against USC to give the Sun Devils a chance.
  • Allen Bradford and Marc Tyler form a dangerous backfield. They are going to have to fight for every yard as ASU’s defense, led by sophomore phenom Vontaze Burfict, does a nice job of swarming to the ball carrier. As long as the Sun Devils don’t allow themselves to be run ragged by USC’s high tempo offense, they should be able to limit the big carries and yards after contact that USC thrives upon.

Wrap Up:

Arizona St. mopped the floor with Washington St. and USC was shown up by Oregon, but neither is relevant in this matchup. I see ASU as a team that is establishing themselves in the Pac-10 and USC as a team that is slowly fading away, but USC still has the upperhand. At least for now, USC still has a future top five pick at quarterback and there is no doubt in my mind that he will walk away with a big win on Saturday.
