LSU Tigers at Auburn Tigers

Saturday October 23rd, 2010

Line: Auburn -6

This SEC match up features a clash of two 7-0 teams. #6 LSU travels to Auburn to face #6 Auburn Tigers. Both teams have been battle tested, but this will be a huge test for both teams.

Keys to the Game:

  • Cameron Newton has the Heisman trophy in his sights. His running attack combined with his huge arm makes it difficult for anyone to control the Auburn offense. He has the potential to explode for over 150 yards on the ground, as he has done four times already this year. If the Tigers want any shot at winning this one, they will have to coral Newton first and foremost. They might be able to recover from Newton launching the ball down the field a few times, but if they allow him to take advantage of the Tigers breaking down defensively in their run defense, the Tigers have no chance of coming away with a victory.
  • Stevan Ridley has to get something going on the ground early. It’s going to be difficult, as the Auburn defense is solid up front, but if Ridley struggles on the ground it is going to make for a long day. The LSU offensive matches up well against the Auburn defensive line, despite giving up size. When LSU gets their running game going, it opens up what is ultimately the strength of the offense, the passing game. The LSU offense features a two quarterback attack that is unmatched across the NCAA. Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson are going to both need to have solid performances for LSU to be successful. If Ridley is held in check, the Auburn front seven is going to be able to pin their ears back, which will put pressure on the quarterbacks. It all starts up front and if the ground game gets shut down, it will send a ripple effect through the entire offense.
  • This game is going to be won up front. If the LSU D Line can keep Cameron Newton still, the Tigers are going to come away with a victory. Unfortunately, it has been nearly impossible to do so. This is going to be a huge game for Newton’s Heisman Resume. If his line can get him time to throw the ball and move around on the football field, he is going to have a huge day. On the other side of the ball, LSU needs to take advantage of Auburn’s aggressiveness. Trying to out muscle Auburn might not be the best way to go. While it is important to get the ground game going, beating them on screens and half back delays might be the easiest way to do it. Auburn is vulnerable to counters, though few teams are able to expose them because their athleticism allows them to get away with over pursuit.

Wrap Up:

I like Auburn in this one. Playing at home in the SEC is a huge advantage. Cameron Newton has a real shot at winning the Heisman this year. LSU is a great football team too. I think they are going to keep it close the entire game. Both teams look to keep their national championship hopes alive, so neither is going to let up easy. I think Auburn comes away with a victory, but they aren’t going to cover. Only one thing is for sure. The Tigers are going to win.
