# 6 Stanford Cardinal at Arizona St. Sun Devils

Saturday November 13th, 2010 7:30 PM EST

Line: Stanford -6

The Stanford Cardinal have flat out dominated this season, losing only to #1 Oregon. Last week, they torched the #15 Arizona Wildcats 42-17. At 4-5, the Arizona St. Sun Devils have endured a season of heartbreak. No game demonstrated this better than lat week’s game against USC, where the Sun Devils lost by one point on the road to USC. Despite having a losing record, the Sun Devils tend to show up for big games. Will they be able to keep it close against Stanford?

Keys to the Game:

  • Andrew Luck is that good. The 6-4 235 pound phenom looks poised to be selected with the first pick in the 2011 draft. Luck has 22 touchdowns this season, while completing 67.8 percent of his throws. Luck is as good as they come at the college level. His leadership and athleticism make him a premiere quarterback. Luck is the clear leader of the team and has the Cardinal rolling.
  • Nobody is as consistently inconsistent as Steven Threet. Threet looks like he has complete command over the offense at times. He marches all the way down the field, fitting the ball into tight windows and leading the Sun Devils with confidence. For whatever reason, he throws interceptions at inopportune moments, leaving his team on the wrong side of the turnover battle. Threet has to learn to live to play another down. Throwing the ball away is better than turning it over. The ASU defense is good enough to keep the Sun Devils in the game. Having them defend a short field handicaps them and Threet constantly does so. Threet will need to limit his turnovers. He has the potential to be a great quarterback, but he definitely has his moments.
  • The Cardinal have a running back by committee, but Stepfan Taylor isĀ  at the forefront of the rushing attack. After Toby Gerhart left, it was unclear who would fill the void in the backfield. Taylor already has 810 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. He has posted five 100 yard games out of his last six outings. Taylor is a dynamic running back and if ASU gets caught up in trying to control Luck, Taylor will take over the game.
  • ASU has a relentless defense. Led by Vontaze Burfict, the Sun Devils have speed all over their defense and make it difficult for running backs to really break loose. The Sun Devils are the only team all season to keep Oregon’s LaMichael James in check. They should keep Stepfan Taylor from making too much noise.

Wrap Up:

The Sun Devils have had close game after close game, but mistakes hold them back from being successful. While the game might stay close for a while, the Sun Devils will inevitably make mental errors that lead to their demise. Stanford has been destroying everything in their path recently. Saturday should be no different.
