Wisconsin Badgers at Iowa Hawkeyes

Saturday October 23rd, 2010 3:30 PM EST

Line: Iowa -6 1/2

While  #13 Wisconsin knocked off the number one team in the nation last week, nobody seemed to notice. #15 Iowa is a 6 1/2 point favorite in this match up. Both teams have one loss against ranked opponents, so this seems like a fairly even match up.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Wisconsin run game needs to attack Iowa at the heart of their defense. John Clay and James White are an outstanding running back tandem that compliment each other well. Iowa is used to facing teams they can out muscle up front, but that won’t be the case this Saturday. Wisconsin will be most effective if they play smash mouth football from the beginning and soften up Iowa. They haven’t battled a team that could neutralize their aggressive defensive line this season, but they are about to find out what it is like when the opposition gets push.
  • Adam Robinson has to have a big game. The Iowa running back was completely shut down one time this season, which coincidentally resulted in the only Iowa loss of the season. They Badgers are fairly stout against the run, but Robinson is on a tear this season, gaining at least 100 yards in four games and 95 in another. It will be difficult for the Badgers to neutralize Robinson, but people said it would be impossible to control Terrelle Pryor last week.
  • Iowa has to send their front seven at Scott Tolzien. too many teams get caught up in the run game Wisconsin boasts about, which in turn makes them vulnerable against the pass. If Tolzien gets too comfortable his mistakes are going to be limited. The Iowa defense has made a name for itself this season by capitalizing on the mistakes of their opponent. It is crucial that they don’t shy away from sending their backers into the backfield. Blitzing and being aggressive is key here. The Badgers are stout up front, but if the Hawkeyes want to create any sort of pressure, they need to send people from everywhere on the field.

Wrap Up:

It is difficult to say either team has a real advantage in this match up. While Iowa is at home, I can’t say the Badgers are going to lose. One look at Wisconsin’s performance last week is enough for me to say they are going to cover this week. Iowa isn’t going to roll over, as they have a few victories under their belt worth bragging about, but winning by any more than a field goal simply isn’t going to happen. Badgers win outright in this one.
