Arizona Wildcats at Wahington St. Cougars

Line: Arizona -23 1/2

#17 Arizona comes into the game 4-1 after losing their top ten ranking last week to Oregon State. The Pac-10 is one of the most competitive conferences in all of college football. Washington State happens to be at the bottom. They have one lonely victory on the season, though their road has been brutal thus far. Arizona is the third ranked opponent they have faced thus far. They are no stranger to talented teams, but they have not kept it close in any of their games against them either.

Keys to the Game:

  • Quarterback Nick Foles is completing 75 percent of his passes this season. He has the potential to have a huge game. The fact that he is going up against Washington State gives more reason to believe Foles will be able to capitalize against a week Washington State team. The Cougars are undisciplined and cannot compete at this level. Giving up 42.8 points a season leaves no reason to believe that the Cougars will be able to hold off the Wildcats in this one. Wide receiver Juron Criner has been held in check in most of the Wildcats games, but he has exploded twice this season for 176 and 179 yards. If Criner can be more consistent, Foles will benefit from having a big time play maker at wide receiver.
  • Quarterback Jeff Tuel has had a good year, but he can’t be an entire team. Tuel only had one poor outing this year, when he threw three picks and only managed one touchdown. He has had a solid year, but when his team is letting up such an astounding amount of points. Playing from behind is frustrating. If the Cougars could hold their opponents to a reasonable amount of points, perhaps 21.3 points per game would be enough to salvage some wins out of the year. Unfortunately, the Cougars do not have an explosive enough offense to compete when their defense is letting offenses pummel them.
  • Arizona has a top ten defense in the nation. This is somewhat surprising, due to the offenses they have played this year. They could have a very good day on Saturday, if they focus on flushing Tuel out of the pocket. They should not try to do too much, as Washington State should gift wrap this game all on their own. Getting too creative could get the Wildcats to retract from their identity. The Cougars have no confidence. Giving up big plays could change that.

Wrap Up:

I like the Wildcats in this one. Arizona is light years ahead of Washington State on both sides of the ball. A big point discrepancy is inevitable. The Wildcats win this one by thirty.
