Orlando Magic at Oklahoma City Thunder

Thursday January 13, 2011 8:00 PM EST

Line: Orlando -1

Orlando snapped a 9 game winning streak with a 92-89 loss at New Orleans in OT. Dwight Howard went for 29 points and 20 rebounds. Jason Richardson had 21 points, but apart from him and Howard, no other starter had more than 10 points. The Thunder now have a 3 game winning streak following a 118-112 win in Houston. The Thunder had 4 starters score more than 10 and like clockwork Durant and Westbrook scored more than 20. Durant lead the team with 30 points.

Stats to consider:

Orlando Magic:

  • Orlando is 25-13 with a 10-8 road record.
  • Points per game: 98.7 (16th)
  • Points allowed per game: 93.3 (5th)
  • Rebounds per game: 42.6 (8th)
  • Assists per game: 19.9 (24th)

Oklahoma City Thunder:

  • The Thunder are 26-13 with a 14-6 home record.
  • Points per game: 103.5 (7th)
  • Points allowed per game: 101.5 (20th)
  • Rebounds per game: 41.6 (13th)
  • Assists per game: 19.7 (27th)

What to watch for:

  • When any team faces the Magic, the key usually is to contain C Dwight Howard. He leads the team with 21.4 PPG, 13.3 RPG and 2.3 BPG. The only problem with the Magic is where all the other scoring will come from. SG Jason Richardson looks like the #2 scorer as he is averaging 14.5 PPG. The team needs scoring out of PG Jameer Nelson who can really get the team going. He leads the team with 6.7 APG and also has 13.3 PPG which is good for 3rd best.
  • The leading scorer from last year, Thunder SF Kevin Durant is doing it again. He leads the league with 28.3 PPG. He is also averaging 6.3 RPG. PG Russell Westbrook has been huge this year averaging 21.9 PPG, 2nd best. He leads the team with 8.2 APG and 1.9 SPG. The big key for the Thunder is PF Serge Ibaka who leads the team with 6.7 RPG and 2.2 BPG. He is also averaging 9.9 PPG.

This basketball pick is made tough by the new and improved Magic. They have a starting 5 that can compete with any. The only problem is that you never know where you are going to get scoring from behind Howard and Richardson. Turkuglu will have his games, Nelson will have his, and either Arenas or Redick will come off the bench and provide scoring. They haven’t been all that consistent, but can score in bunches when they are all clicking. The Thunder have been solid at home with only 6 loses and can compete with anyone when they get 50 points from Westbrook and Durant.
