Minnesota Vikings at Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday December 26th, 2010 8:20 PM EST

Line: Philadelphia -15

The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off of one of the biggest comebacks in recent memory. Capped off by a DeSean Jackson punt return as time expired, the Eagles soared to a victory after being three scores down deep in the fourth quarter. A win like that over a division rival can do wonders for a team, especially heading into the playoffs. The Eagles have a one game lead over the division and should comfortably reach a division title.

The Minnesota Vikings have lost two in a row, and their loss on Monday Night last week shows just how low the team can sink with a wounded Brett Favre and no Adrian Peterson in the line up. The Vikings simply don’t have the magic they had last year and are out of playoff contention. At this point, they are playing for the job of Leslie Frazier and other members on staff. This was a botched season, but a win over the Eagles could spoil Philadelphia’s season.

Keys to the Game:

  • Adrian Peterson is questionable, and Toby Gerhart is not Adrian Peterson. Peterson is an offense within himself. Teams have to load up the box against him and they still have problems stopping him on the ground. Toby Gerhart is a good second back, but he is not a feature back. He did fairly well last week all things considered, but if Peterson does not play, you can expect the Vikings to have serious problems moving the ball down the field.
  • Two weeks ago, DeSean Jackson had 210 yards receiving. Last week, he had the game winning punt return. He can flat out fly and the Vikings have to do whatever it takes to keep him in front of them. They can’t kick the ball to him, simply because he is too big of a threat to even attempt to stop when he has the ball in his hands. The Eagles have a number of guys that can score from anywhere on the field, but allowing DeSean Jackson to break loose will make this game render an out of control result.

Key Matchup:

Michael Vick Vs. Contain

  • Michael Vick is the most dangerous player in football. He is a true dual threat and he has a number of guys he can distribute the ball to. He has an unparalleled screen game with LeSean McCoy and can also hit both his receivers on deep routes for huge gains. The biggest threat he poses, is with his legs. Last week he ran for 110 yards against the Giants. The Giants are a team who should match up favorably against a scrambling quarterback, but it proved to be too much to handle for the Giants.
  • The Vikings have a solid defensive line, which has its pros and cons for containing a quarterback. Michael Vick will likely be cut off going up the middle, as it is hard to get around the Williams. To truly break a scrambling quarterback, you have to keep him in the pocket. The Vikings need Jared Allen to keep contain. Allowing Michael Vick to come to him is going to be a better approach than being overly aggressive and getting caught in overpursuit.

Wrap Up:

I like taking the underdog when the spread is over 14. The Vikings will almost certainly lose with Joe Webb in and AP being questionable. The weather is flat out terrible for both teams, which actually works in the favor of the Vikings. The Eagles are explosive and they blow teams out consistently. Even so, predicting a sixteen+ point blow out is something I simply cannot do in this situation.
