Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs

Sunday December 26th, 2010 1:00 PM EST

Line: Kansas City -5

Overview:

The Kansas City Chiefs are involved in one of the tightest races in the NFL. While they are in good shape, considering their one game advantage over the second place Chargers in the AFC West heading into Week 16. Even so, the Chargers are soaring and one minor slip up could land the Chiefs on the outside looking in. With a tough final regular season game against the Raiders, the Chiefs can’t afford to let one get away this week.

After six straight losses, it appeared that the Tennessee Titans were going to lay down and chalk up yet another loss when they took on the Texans last week. In an unexpected turn of events, they coasted to a huge victory and looked like the Titans that were going to make a run for the AFC South at mid season. While Tennessee had an impressive performance, can they hold off Kansas City at Arrowhead?

Keys to the Game:

  • Chris Johnson could be set for another big day. While Kansas City is certainly a much stouter run defense that Houston, the Titans have a great run game and could still put up 100 yards with Johnson, as they have eight times this season. It is no secret that the Titans are much more effective in every facet of their offense when Johnson gets going. They have never lost by more than three when Johnson hits 100 yards rushing. If he doesn’t they will almost certainly not cover.
  • Dwayne Bowe has to get back on track. The Dwayne Bowe slant has been one of the best plays in professional football this season. With 14 touchdowns on the year, Bowe needs to shake off his recent ice cold streak that has amassed three catches in three games. He will be matched up against Cortland Finnegan, who is solid at corner, but not quite a shut down guy. The Chiefs are obviously a running team with Jamaal Charles leading the way, but Matt Cassel has to get the ball to Bowe for the Chiefs to get back to dominating teams.

Key Matchup:

The Titans Vs. Arrowhead

  • Arrowhead gives the Chiefs the best home field advantage in the NFL. It is unbearable for most quarterbacks and taxing on offenses in general. It is nearly impossible to hear and creates problems for the opposition every time they have the ball. Not to mention, the Chiefs seem to gain momentum at home and have had the largest discrepancy between home wins and away wins in the entire NFL.
  • Only the Titans and Raiders stand in the way of the Chiefs from going undefeated at home. The Titans are out of the playoffs, but spoiling a few streaks and racking up signature wins to save jobs within the organization is in their best interest at this point. Look to see the Titans struggle to adapt when they get into Kansas City. They haven’t won a road game since Week 6 and will likely continue that streak this week.

Wrap Up:

The Chiefs are fighting to lock up the playoffs and the Titans are playing for pride. The Chiefs are undefeated at home and have a significant edge over the Titans. Despite winning last week, the Titans are still 1-6 over the last seven weeks. The Chiefs should be able to win this one easily and covering should not be an issue.
