Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers

Sunday November 7th, 2010 8:20 PM EST

Line: Green Bay -9

Overview:

Jerry Jones issued an apology to the fans of the organization, which should be indicative of how there season has gone thus far. The Cowboys had already put themselves in the Super Bowl before the season began. As a result, they are going to miss the playoffs entirely. They were embarrassed at home last week against the Jaguars, while the 5-3 Packers chalked up an impressive win against the Jets on the road.

Keys to the Game:

  • Despite being 1-6, the Cowboys have made very few adjustments. There is limited competition in Dallas, which is dumbing down the talent on the roster. Everyone feels safe with their roster spot and it is adding to the sense of entitlement in Dallas. Wade Phillips has shown his discontent by pouting during press conferences, but with a team as talented as the Cowboys winning only one game in week eight, Phillips should be turning the entire team upside down. The Cowboys need to learn to compete, both against themselves and other teams. They suffered a painful loss to the Vikings and followed it up by rolling over and dying in front of their home crowd the next week. If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten, Wade. It’s time for a change and you might be at the top of the pecking order.
  • The Packers are widely recognized for their explosive pass offense, but the win last week is credited to the defense. Shutting out the Jets in the Meadowlands is no easy task. The Packers were struggling offensively and both teams were playing sloppy football. What was beautiful about the game was the way the defense was able to respond to the struggling offense and buckled down when it mattered most. To be great in the NFL, you have to be able to win in a number of different ways. It has to be comforting to the Packers to know their defense can end up on the winning end of a game like Sunday’s, especially against a great rushing offense like New York’s.
  • Aaron Rodgers has weapons dropping like flies, so it’s no wonder his numbers haven’t been spectacular. Nearly every stat of Aaron Rodgers is suffering in comparison to the rest of his career, but his confidence has to be sky high. Rodgers has lost weapons left and right with huge injuries that could have easily crippled the Packers. Rather than use the injuries as an excuse, they moved on and rallied around the weapons they had. The Packers have not gone down without a fight in any of their games, which is a tribute to Rodgers’ leadership and winning persona.
  • Jon Kitna threw four interception last week. While they weren’t all his fault, he threw some passes that were ill advised to say the least. Once regarded as the best backup in the league, Kitna’s stock is dropping rapidly, along with the entire Cowboys organization. He did manage to throw one touchdown, but with Miles Austin, Roy Williams, and Dez Bryant, you would think a 1-4 TD INT ratio would be out of the question. Kitna will need to be more cautious on Sunday. The Packers have a mean pass rush and unforgiving defensive backs.
  • Clay Matthews could easily come away with multiple sacks in this game. Matthews has 9.5 sacks on the year, despite missing time with an injury. Since the Cowboys have decided to take a sabbatical mid-season, it is not out of the question to assume Matthews could register three sacks, as he has twice already this season. The Cowboys can’t play with no effort, like they did against Jacksonville. People get hurt when teams don’t put out 100 percent effort. Ask Tony Romo.

Wrap Up:

I had my doubts about how the Packers would respond to injury, but they proved they can hold their own with the personnel they have. I went with the Cowboys last week, thinking there was no chance the Jaguars were going to hand the Cowboys their second consecutive embarrassing home loss. I was wrong. I won’t make the same mistake twice. The Packers beat the Jets by nine on the road last week. I can’t imagine what they will do to the Cowboys at home.
