Indianapolis Colts at Washington Redskins

Sunday October 17th, 2010 8:20 PM EST

Line: Indianapolis -3

The Colts are struggling by their standards. Losing to the Jaguars due to a 58 yard field goal was a crushing blow. They go into Washington D.C. with a 3-2 record. The Redskins have shown they can contend with good teams. They have come away with two wins at home, with their only home loss occurring in overtime. They followed up back to back losses with back to back wins, bringing them to 3-2 as well.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Redskins don’t have an answer for the Colts and their dominant pass rushers. Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are going to have a field day against a struggling Redskins line. Donovan McNabb is going to be running for his life. In their game against the Chiefs, they did a slow motion instant replay that showed Freeney and Mathis both getting off the ball before the opposing tackles even knew it had been snapped. You can expect the same thing to happen here. Julius Peppers already handled this same offensive front. The Colts line knows all the tricks of the trade. They are going to get to McNabb early and often, completely eliminating any hope to get the passing game going.
  • The Redskins allow nearly three hundred yards passing a game. This is not good news when you are going up against one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. Manning has the ability to dissect even the most intricate defenses. The Redskins have proven to be anything but intricate. Matt Schaub had 497 yards and went 38/52 against the Redskins. Manning takes no prisoners. He knows every tell and vulnerability a defense has, even if the opponent doesn’t. There isn’t just a chink in the Redskins armor. The entire pass defense is laughable. You can argue that they have faced some of the best passers in the game, but that isn’t going to change this week.
  • Clinton Portis out, Ryan Torain in. This hurts the Redskins. They were having problems as it was on the ground, but now without a feature back, moving the ball on the ground is going to be trying. The Colts are a lot better against the pass than the run, so the fact that the Redskins are slim at running back bodes well for the Colts. Donovan McNabb leads a Redskins offense with a lot of questions. He is a fantastic leader, but the Redskins are not talented enough to have their best back go out with an injury and continue to produce at a high level. They came away with a win last week, but the Colts should be able to take advantage of their ineptness on the ground.

Wrap Up:

The Redskins are going to contend for a playoff spot this year. There is a ton of potential. The coach and the quarterback are in place and their front seven is packed with talent. That being said, Manning isn’t going to keep letting games slip away. The Colts want to move to 4-2. Despite the Redskins being at home, without Portis, they will struggle offensively. They need to be at full strength to be competitive in this one.
