Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers

Line: San Francisco -3 1/2

How can a team that has gone 0-4 be favored against a team that is 2-2? The 49ers play much better at home, the Eagles lost Michael Vick to a rib injury, and the 49ers are due for a victory. The 49ers already let go of their offensive coordinator, Jimmy Raye, after losing their first three games. With a team that seems to have the talent to win, it won’t be long before Mike Singletary is given the boot if losing becomes regular practice. The question becomes, how will the 49ers respond to playing for their coaches’ livelihood?

  • Nobody likes to see anyone get hurt, but the 49ers might have breathed a sigh of relief when they heard Vick wasn’t going to be taking part in this one. The 49ers have trouble defending speed backs. Vick creates the same problems with his legs. His attributes make Lesean McCoy more effective, so his absence is going to have an adverse affect on his entire team. The Eagles offense is where the were pre Michael Vick. Kevin Kolb isn’t terrible. He has all the tools to succeed and he is the reason the Eagles saw Donovan McNabb as an expendable asset. He just doesn’t have the same skill set Vick does, which the 49ers have to be happy about.
  • The 49ers are making a youth movement. Taylor Mays made a lot of teams that passed on him in the draft cringe on Sunday. He made plays all over the field on defense, even scoring a touchdown. He is still raw in coverage, but his talent makes up for how green some aspects of his game are. Michael Lewis is none too happy about the move, but it showed that if there is someone behind you that Singletary thinks can make the team bigger, faster, and stronger, he is going to make the switch. The 49ers have already moved three rookies into the starting line up. There were rumors that Takeo Spikes was going to get replaced by rookie Navarro Bowman. The rumors were dispelled, but in all likelihood, Bowman will enter the starting lineup this year.
  • The best quarterback is going to win this game. Kevin Kolb’s “it” factor has come into question. I’m not sure what he can’t do, but it seems like the team has more faith in Vick. Alex Smith’s entire game is in question. He doesn’t have the arm, accuracy, or poise to get the ball to his receivers. 49ers fans are tired of waiting around for the Alex Smith project to come around. Smith has a great group of targets to throw the ball to and a top ten running back in his backfield. With three first round offensive linemen, he is running out of excuses. He looked good against the Saints, but the first overall pick needs to be the difference in games. Flying under the radar isn’t going to sit well with his team. Whichever quarterback shows up on Sunday will come away with the win.
  • The Eagles need to find an answer for Frank Gore. Gore leads the team in targets, catches, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Vernon Davis creates a mismatch for defenses, but so does Frank Gore. The reason he has so many receptions is because that is how the 49ers are getting the ball to him in space. Sometimes he is the check down guy and Alex Smith dumps the ball off to in order to make something out of nothing. If the Eagles get too distracted by Michael Crabtree, and Vernon Davis, 21 is going to break loose. To shut down Gore is to shut down the 49ers. Alex Smith doesn’t respond well to having responsibility.

Wrap up:

The 49ers have shot themselves in the foot for four weeks. If they can limit turnovers, they have a good shot at coming away with a victory. They are too talented to go 0-5. This game is going to begin the easier part of their schedule. It is imperative they come away with a win. I like the 49ers in this one. They covered last week on the road against Atlanta. They are due for a victory.
