Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles

October 3rd 2010 4:15 PM EST

Line: Philadelphia -6 1/2

The Redskins are coming off an embarrassing loss to the St. Louis Rams. The Eagles just showed America they are an explosive offense that can hang up an astounding amount of yards if you don’t have an answer for Michael Vick. The Redskins come into the game 1-2, hoping to salvage their season by coming away with a big win against a division rival. The Eagles come in 2-1, looking to solidify their team on top of the NFC East.

Keys to the Game:

  • The Michael Vick experience is going to make this one of the most highly rated games in the league. Yes, McNabb’s return to Philly is going to be a big story line, but Michael Vick is, once again, the most exciting player to watch on a football field. Putting up four touchdowns last week proved he is better than ever. He can beat you with his arm, he has weapons all over the place, and he makes defenses pay for leaving him unaccounted for. If Michael Vick breaks loose, this game is going to get out of control.
  • Donovan McNabb has something to prove. Donovan McNabb has never really been welcomed in Philly. From the time he arrived on draft day, to his multiple botched championship runs, McNabb was never well received amongst Philly fans. But he took them to three NFC Championships in a row and a Superbowl. Doesn’t that count for anything? No. He’s been booed in an Eagles jersey, believe he will not receive a pleasant reception when he enters the stadium as a Redskin. McNabb knows the Eagles and he knows where they are weak. He went up against them in practice every day for the last decade or so, so he could be dangerous. That also works on the opposite end, as the Eagles know what frustrates Donovan. Andy Reid should be able to put together a solid defensive game plan.
  • Nobody knows what Redskins team is going to show up. The Redskins shocked the Cowboys, took the Texans into O.T., and then completely shut down against the Rams. Every time I do my sports picks, the Redskins are one of the hardest teams to wrap my head around. They have the coach, they have the quarterback, they have the defense, so essentially, it comes down to consistency. I think it will come, but they need to put it all together to win on the road in Philadelphia.
  • The Redskins front seven better have an answer for Vick. The Redskins have a great front seven, one of the best in the NFL. (Andre Carter, Brian Orakpo, London Fletcher, and Albert Haynesworth come to mind.) Orakpo is great off the edge, but Michael Vick might be able to out run them, as they lack pursuing speed down the field. If Vick gets to the second level, there is big play potential. Even if they manage to isolate Vick, Lesean McCoy has proven he can be a reliable person to dump the ball off to. When it comes down to covering Vick or McCoy, teams have chosen one or the other. The other has had a career day. Unless the Redskins can find a way to account for both of them, they are in for a long, unpleasant outing. Oh ya, Desean Jackson is also streaking down the field, so even if they take care of their backfield, the Eagles have an elite deep threat who can flat out fly.

Wrap up:

The Redskins are going to be a solid football team. Unfortunately for them, the film isn’t going to be of any help in this match up. Nobody has come up with a solution for the mismatches McCoy, Vick, and Jackson create. If they do, Brent Celek and Jeremy Maclin are still reliable targets. The Eagles have scored at will since Vick came onto the scene. The Redskins will be their toughest opponent yet, but I don’t think the Redskin defense is going to be able to keep it close, especially given last week’s outing against the Rams.
