Washington Redskins at St. Louis Rams

September 26, 2010 4:15 PM EST

Line: Redskins -4 1/2

Looking at the schedule week one, this game might not have looked like it was going even be watchable. As it turns out, it’s packed with story lines. Donovan McNabb is looking like he could lead the Redskins to the playoffs. The Rams look like they may have struck gold with Sam Bradford. The Rams haven’t put it together yet, and the Redskins lost a tough one last week, but both teams should be excited about their improvements made from 2009 to 2010.

Keys to the Game

  • The Rams are going to have to win with their offense. Stopping Donovan McNabb right now is virtually impossible for the Rams. They don’t have the defensive personnel. They can’t get in his head and force him to make bad throws. The Redskins are going to put points on the board regardless of what the Rams do. The Redskins were unstoppable last week against a solid Houston defense. They don’t have an explosive offense, but McNabb has the ability to put points on the board when he needs to.
  • Mark Clayton needs to catch the ball. Yes, I know he has 12 catches for 143 yards. Sam Bradford has placed a few perfect passes right on Clayton’s numbers that he has dropped. It’s easy to look to the end zone before you have the ball. Clayton needs to concentrate and make the easy grabs. Bradford has made Clayton his favorite target and it it isn’t acceptable to drop passes that are on the money. Those few catches might have put a W on the board for the Rams.
  • The Rams needs to limit  Steven Jackson’s carries. He just had back surgery this off season and he already has 20+ carries in each game. All that is well and good, but running Jackson into the ground early might jeapordise his career. He appears healthy, but the ground and pound of his time spent as the Rams’ workhorse has taken its toll on Jackson. Luckily for Jackson, Bradford could turn out to be an elite quarterback. Maybe he won’t be the only option for the Rams for the rest of his career.

It’s important to understand that the Rams haven’t played anyone worth anything. The Cardinals and the Raiders are both teams that are likely to miss the 8-8 mark this year. The Redskins, on the other hand have been tested. They are the real deal, and should come away with a victory this week with ease. The Rams are improving, as they were at least competitive against a couple sub par teams. The team shows promise, but the Redskins look like they are set to up against just about anyone.
