There was a humongous upswing in poker play in the last 10 years. What has happened to poker industry is truly remarkable. It is worth looking at why it is that people get involved with poker, and why did this unexpected jump in activity occurred.

Alright, why are people interested in this particular card game? We get interested in participating in poker games because of a few different factors. In the next couple of paragraphs we will outline the reasons people like poker.

Part of playing poker is the head on struggles that players engage in, the head games that go on. This shows up in various forms, including how you make people feel at the table. There also is the pleasure of concealment, not to mention the pleasure of calling out what your opponent is holding, and being right.

There is no other game that takes this much skill, but that luck can hurt you so bad. This makes poker a special game. The chance to get hot and win huge money makes tournament poker very enticing to many poker players. If you have enough persistence and determination, there is no reason you can�’t become an excellent poker player.

So, it is easy to see why people like poker. Just what happened to cause poker to become so much more prevalent? Poker boomed, but why? Three events in particular caused an explosion. The pocket card camera started this, followed by online poker, and then a virtual rookie winning the biggest tournament in poker in 2003 set the game on an upward spiral.

In the mid 1990’s an apparatus called the hole card cam is born. This new invention gave us a look at what the players have in their hands while play was going on. With the addition of this device, people started enjoying the TV replays of tournaments.

The next thing that happened was online poker was born. With online poker, you can play from home, any time of the day or night. Online poker rooms started to grow as more people started playing online.

We see a big jump in TV audience size due to the “pocket cam” era. More players are coming to the live events, making winning prizes look like lottery tickets. We have a growing industry, but then poker got lucky.

Chris Moneymaker now wins the WSOP Main Event in 2003. Winning over 2 million dollars. The prize money became huge, because of the increased number of players, mostly online players. With people seeing that anyone can win millions at a poker tournament, poker boomed.

Big poker tournaments find the tables filled with many Hollywood super stars, everyone is getting into the game. Now, poker has become a big mainstream industry. There is no end in site.

When you look back, it is easy to see that these events set poker on this new, fast growing, course. This has become an industry that generates billions of dollars annually. Growth is expected for years to come.
